Clip studio paint - How to use 3d models for making comics

In this video, I show how I use 3d models to "sketch" my scenes in clip studio paint.
What's great about this is that you can create a scene with multiple characters, and you can show what's going on from a completely new angle with minimal effort. For example, if a character is talking to a group, the "camera" can be over the shoulder of the speaker, then for the response, it can be reversed to show the same scene from another angle. Watching the video may give you some ideas you can use 3d models on your own projects.

For everyone who’s saying this feels like cheating, it’s not. How do y’all think Disney gets those fluid movements in their animated movies? They animate over their references. It’s rotoscoping. This is kind of what it’s like in a way.
@lainkinnie1442

exactly. plus you move and place your 3d models, creating your own pose,you're not tracing a copyrighted photo searched on internet 😊 it's really useful

Thanks a million, you just saved me time, because I'll trace my characters over the poses. Saved me time really, can't thank you enough. Good looking out. One love. Heck, you get the meaning. Lol

I say for best results use the models as reference, no tracing. Really helps with things like foreshortening! no more browsing google images for 2 hours to find an example of the pose you are going for

I was just about to post this comment. If there's anything I'd add, it'd be to only trace for practice. It could help to trace a hand so that you know how where lines should go on a hand, but that's just my opinion.
@EchoJ
@EchoJ 4 года назад
Disney animators “traced” when using the rotoscope technique to get those fluid movements in scenes like Aurora and Prince Philip dancing in _Sleeping Beauty._ Most of the classic Disney animated films used rotoscoping and I bet you don’t question their talent or artistry. Pros trace all the time when it saves time and money. IMO, as long as you’ve got the (anatomy) fundamentals down already, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with tracing models.
@emiidotjp
@emiidotjp 4 года назад
EchoJae thank you for finally saying it. And then people wonder how they get those fluid movements. They “trace” their references.

Question: if the 3d models are customizable and you have a specific character traits on the model, then does it still count as tracing?

The idea is great but I would suggest couple of things along with this process. - First prepare the storyboard, and try different ways/angels you want to show, and sketch the page before hand along with backgrounds. Then use your technique and you will see drastic improvements. - Second, try to learn while implying this technique, because it would be very hard to draw the extreme and drastic angels that would make your characters pop out and make it more interesting. Through this method only, there is more stiffness in the character's position, as in the real manga some things are exaggerated in order to convey different particular ideas/emotions.
@KendrysDraws
@KendrysDraws 8 лет назад
I agree, 3d models alone makes characters look stiff. It should be combined with sketches and exaggerated to make them look good, but it's great as a rough idea of the poses, especially poses in extreme angles.
@Bronsons
@Bronsons 8 лет назад
I've found that there are option in the 3D modeling creation that allow you to essentially have the models be foreshortened for you. Meaning that you can in fact get every extreme angle you can think of. I was messing around with replicating some iconic Marvel scenes with the models and it can be replicated perfectly if you do it right (which is really easy once you get the hang of it) I would also like to say that an artist shouldn't rely on only this technique though as it is a form of training wheels. It is a lot of extra steps that you'd have to take every time you want to create a comic that is just a lot of extra time put in for the same outcome. Eventually once you get the hang of proportions and how bodies look at all angles you won't need this technique anymore and can create your own style. But in the mean time, have fun.
@TheKevphil
@TheKevphil 7 лет назад
I agree, of course. But in a way, the relative simplicity of these "dolls" actually makes it easier to go in and tighten things. The better the artist's understanding of anatomy and drapery, the better and more unique the result.

This is seriously cool :) Are the 3D models included with the software or have you had to create them all individually? Are each of the poses based on a single model that you could adjust or would each need adjusting individually? So for instance if I'm making a comic with a small, thin man and a large hulking amazonian woman, could I create two custom 3D models and have an automatic reference for every pose in the library or would I need to create from scratch a small version and large version of every pose?
@KendrysDraws
@KendrysDraws 5 лет назад
-yeah the 3d models are included -you can customize the body type of each character -you have a pose library and you can add the same pose to a big character and a small one, it would work on both, no need to create a small version and a large one

Any process you use can take away the 'essence of what make a comic great' if you use it incorrectly, this is not meant to be used for tracing, it's more for reference.

it normally shows that sign in gray, but you can still drag it to the canvas and it will change to a green "plus" sign.

Seems like more effort and time in my eyes. I’m torn between just having a kinda sloppy imperfect comic vs a crisp one with good angles just cause it takes so long to pose the figures. Plus the background is still 2D. I guess you could import a 3D model of an office or something and place the character models in the scene. That would make different angles of the same scene easier. But again….. that’s a lot of damn work for a panel readers are going to spend two seconds looking at. :/
@KendrysDraws
@KendrysDraws 2 года назад
I know what you mean, it can takes a long time to pose the 3d models but you don't really have to pose most of them too much. For example, 0:08 these are pretty much default poses that come with the program, I just twist the body a bit, maybe rise an arm or leg. I would just treat it like a sketch and do quick poses even if they look a little weird, for me It's mostly moving the camera around to get the angle or composition right
@TheKevphil
@TheKevphil 7 лет назад
You don't expressly say (write) this in your video, though I noticed it happening: If you pull a new "doll" into a scene with an existing one, the new one will adopt the perspective of the first. QUESTION: You seem to have a page preview view where the previews are large. How did you do that? And can the pages be drawn on, in that view? GOOD series of videos discussing 3D integration!
@KendrysDraws
@KendrysDraws 7 лет назад
Yeah, the new doll will adopt the perspective of the first, if you add it in the same layer, if you don't want that to happen you can create a new layer on top and add the doll there. For the "preview page" I just have a new document open, I pose the characters there and rasterize the layer there, then copy and paste them to the different panels in the other document. And yeah you can draw on that "preview page" but on a new layer.

I am using 3d models on my first comic and it is helping. The only problem I am having is if I try to use multiple models they are on individual planes and not the same one so if I try to rearrange the angle I have to move each one separately instead of just moving the "camera." Is there a way to get them on the same grind?

@@Silverdragon0 make sure you have the 3d model layer selected. If you don't the other 3d models will be in different layers.
