About Your Teacher
Mitch Stark is the Founding Creative Director of Theatre Avenue, an Atlanta-based studio which produces projection designs for theatre, ballet and dance performances around the world.
He designs and animates digital projections for schools, universities and professional companies globally, for productions such as Willy Wonka, Swan Lake, The Wizard of Oz, Nutcracker Ballet, Little Mermaid, and beyond.
Mitch teaches nationally and creates educational content about art, media and projections. He also writes for theatrical journals and magazines.

What would you consider to be the best software to use for when all the projections are ready and you perform the show? I am currently using after effects for mapping. What would be a good software to present them?

We're just starting up as a community theatre group, and this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm curious if you use short throw projections from the front or rear projection, and how do you set up projection screens that are so big? We're mostly actors and not stage designers.

Great question. I've seen both front and rear projection work well for short throw. Some of how you set up the screens really does depend on your space. In general though if you're doing rear projection you can have the projector all the way at the back of your stage, then hang or set up your semi-transparent surface in front. Front projection you usually need to get your projector hung up high pointing down or hide it in a stage element. So much more I could say on this. My company uses projections and half of the time the picture is too small and it ends up looking terrible and really unprofessional.

I get why they use it. I personally do not like them. When I go to theater I’m disappointed when a projection are being used as the main set. To me it is like a zoom call with a fake screen behind the actors.
