Should you ride flat pedals? Should you ride clipless pedals? Which ones are best? Or more importantly, which ones are right for YOU??
I asked Enduro World Series and Downhill World Champions Tracy Moseley and Morgane Charre for their thoughts on the pros and cons of each pedal, and their tips to adapt to each type.
I hope this video helps you if you're thinking about trying a different type of pedal. The main thing is that whatever you decide to try, stick at it and give it a proper chance. One or two rides probably isn't enough as you will need time to get used to the new pedals.
Don't forget to leave me any questions in the comments below!

I've only been riding for 2-3 years. But only, thus far, on flats. I've been thinking about trying clips for a while, particularly as I'm racing more and more. If/when I take it up, the general plan will be train (mostly) on flats, and race in clips.

Yeah, I more or less only race on clips these days. When I first started mtb'ing back in the early 90s, going to clips was almost like a rite of passage but I think that period is finished now. I probably rode clips exclusively for about 15 years, but I suppose it must be 10 years now that I'm almost always on flats. For racing I like that it's one less thing to worry about - my foot isn't going to get bucked into a strange place on my pedal if I'm clipped in. I just make sure I get the clips back on the bike a few weeks beforehand so that I'm used to how clipping in and out again - it always takes a few laps even when you're very used to both types.

Another excellent vlog, the point about the suspension was something I'd never thought about before but it makes sense.

Thanks Emily, nice well rounded discussion of plusses and minuses of flats or clipless. I always ride clipless as I do a lot of technical climbing and cross country but I believe it may be handicapping me for technical steep downhills as I believe I have learned some bad habits that limit my technical downhill ability. I am going to try flats for a while but I don't think I will be patient enough to allow myself to improve without getting too frustrated :)

I tend to ride clips for most of my riding but if i'm messing around on street, pump track or on the rare occasions i hit the DH tracks then the flat pedals come out. It usually takes a few days before hand and the first run of a track to get used to flats but the confidence they give me on steep, tech stuff is worth it!

Wish I had a crack at clips a few years ago. Recently tried to get used to them after years of riding flats but it felt so foreign to me!

Yeah I think they do for everyone tbh! Defo take a while to get used to if you’ve been on flats for years.. but they’re not for everyone that’s for sure. Personally I can’t decide ! They both have characteristics I like and dislike!

I think I'm going to have to give flats another go at some point. Not been on them since about 2010 apart from a one off ride when we launched stamp pedals back in 2016!

yeah you should! I am totally happy on clips but there's just this hard-to-describe subtle feeling of extra freedom on flats which I really like too.. and it is nice being able to swap between the two based on your ride plans, that's for sure :-)

Flats for MTB and clipless for gravel. For some reason my feet hurt when using clipless on the MTB.

Ah that’s weird. I usually would get that on the roadie but not on MTB!

Might find your cleats are set to far forward on the shoe so your weight when stood up is going throught the ball of your feet and toes, try moving them rearwards for mtb, or try a stiffer soled shoe. That's what i did for both road and mtb as i used to get a lot of foot pain!

My feet hurt if I climb a lot on flats on my MTB. Same pain I get from ballet. I point my feet pretty hard and pull the pedals up when I climb.

Have you ever taken your clipless pedal bike to a trail, and realized you forgot your shoes?
