Barry Humphries, a remarkably gifted comedian, and the man who found him and gave him his big break, Peter Cook, the absolute and undisputed king of satire, and probably the funniest man the UK has ever produced. This interview is the best. Together they are absolute dynamite, just look at them laugh. They make ruse after ruse that has the audience in total stitches. Brilliant!! This is comedy, and these two have it in droves.

I have not seen this for over 18 years as I'd lent a VHS tape of it that I recorded off the TV to someone I worked with at the time (now that I think of it "Withnail & I" was on the same tape, so I was obviously lending them that ). Looking at it today it's 500 times funnier than I even remember. Well worth the wait to see it again, thanks so much for posting. This is comedy nourishment for the soul. Two kings of the craft. No, THREE kings -- God Bless Clive James.

The words "talented" and "genius" are thrown around, about every performer these days. Barry Humphries truly is!!!! It will be a very sad day when he checks out. One of the greatest and intelligently clever comics of the past 100 years. A REAL great, that has no current day peers. Nowadays we have imposter "comics" like Nish Kumar and Mosiah Gilligan, who are as funny as terminal cancer!!! It just shows how little talent you need to be on TV these days.

Barry Humphries captured and held us [as an audience] during his career and still holds us in 2019! Peter Cook and Dudley Moore do the same. Harry Enfield, Peter Kay, etc have had huge commercial success, but have been forgotten. Why? Well, they are both first generation comedians from normal income backgrounds. Peter, Barry and Dud had financial backing from family to indulge. What do you think?
@wessexwench6974
@wessexwench6974 4 года назад
No amount of financial backing can buy the level of humour passing between Barry Humphries and Peter Cook in this interview. Cook was already suffering ill health, while Humphries was on top form, in every sense. Money has nothing to do with it.

Peter Cook doesn't give enough - this is famous; as a performer, he gives his all, but he doesn't pick sides, unless its his own, and more often than not he forgets to pick that one. For instance, this interview. Barry Humphries adores Peter. He even ridiculed him with Les Patterson. What better tribute for a born Peter Cook? But look at his other choice for sides: the slobbering interviewer. It wouldn't have harmed him to choose wisely. "Okay-Okay, I choose that one then," says Peter Cook, testily, mistaking himself for being on a quiz show. Peter Morningsnow sympathizes. He often mistakes himself for being on a quiz show. He has neglected a hundred Barry Humphries of his own. He has catered to the slobbering interviewer. He never recognized him as that, though; he thought he was him.
@petermorningsnow
@petermorningsnow 6 лет назад
What I wrote is nonsense, I agree. But I disagree that it is a rant. It is the essence of a ramble, in the peripatetic or Byronian sense. And that bit about the slobbering interviewer - Bach never nailed it better.

Apparently Peter Cook ,at the dinner table,or in the pub,among friends was so funny people literally begged him to stop as they laughed so much it hurt.Ive seen and heard an awful lot of his stuff over the years from beyond the fringe to dereck and clive,plus loads of interviews and I'm bound to say he was a talented man,but this comedic godhood some people elevate him to:here hes pretty obviously annoyed that Barry Humphries has Clive James,and the audience,enthralled but both his delivery and the platypus story itself are just flat.One swallow doesn't make a summer I know but I think unless he was the undoubted star of the show he couldn't be bothered.Comments anyone?

Oh, on the contrary. I think that his (Cook's) admiration of BH is all too apparent. They clearly also got on with each other tremendously well. As for Humphries stealing the show, bear in mind that you are watching the second half of the programme. In the first half all the attention was paid to Cook. Added to which, in any event, Cook - as he admits - is slothful enough to be happy to let somebody else carry a show. What I see is two very talented friends enjoying an evening together.
