I was in Nottingham at the time of the anniversary of the death of the great man. The base of the statue in the centre of Nottingham was adorned with flowers and scarves, not just of Forest but of other sides too.
Mark I can believe that because he was loved by every true football fan. He was robbed by the FA by sir Bert millichip of England job when Ron Greenwood was given the managers job and his name wasn't even on the shortlist for an interview disgusting but true. I'm a West Ham fan and it's like Bobby Moore every truthful football fan loved him but in a different way.
@@keith79mod11 Yes,he was too much of a "Free Spirit"or not enough of a"boot licker"for them...Totally ridiculous!! They might have f##king won something with him in charge..
I met Mr Clough once when I got a 3 pound 50 ticket to Old Trafford (6th round of the FA cup) 1-0 Forest (Roy Keane scored) Mr Clough walked in and I stood up to attention like a guardsman! He was terrifying but he is still my idol! Never forget you Brian! Best manager England never had!
I wish I had the chance to see him in person. So many things i would love to have asked him and I'm confident that he would've answered them too. A man of the people and always generous with his time ❤️🏴⚽️
@@weekendwarriorprospecting817 I was lucky enough to bump into him after his retirement when he was helping out at his son Simons newsagent in West Bridgford. Whoever said you should never meet your heroes was wrong. I was a bumbling wreck but he shook my hand warmly, gave me time for a brief chat and even called me "young man". Will never ever forget that moment till my final breath.
The greatest England manager we never had.deemed unsuitable by the top brass.had we appointed clough I've no doubt about it,we would have won the World Cup
He was deemed unsuitable by one man; Harold Thompson. He was the dictatorial head of the FA. He alone decided that Clough would not be England manager when Revie left in 1977. He alone appointed the yes-man Ron Greenwood. He knew that if Clough was England manager then his days as the dictator were over.
Excellent story, Clive Tyldesley always seems to enjoy commentating on the game and for his natural enthusiasm and love of the game he is my favourite commentator..
You’ve got to say hand on heart one of Englands greatest ever mangers ..charismatic ..belligerent all rolled into one. He will be spoken about for ever more in the game..True LEGEND ⚽️
I remember watching Forest v my side, Cardiff City, not so long after he took over and they were different gravy. I guessed then they would go onto glory but didn't think they would do quite as well. Clough is legend of the game and badly missed by us, the fans
Great days. Loved going to watch Forest in those days, we were mainly hopeless apart from Duncan McKenzie but good atmosphere at games despite small crowds. BC was like a breath of fresh air on and off the field!!
I met Cloughie when I was after a ticket to Man Utd away in the FA cup 6th round in the 80's! He walked by me and I was terrified! I stood up like a guardsman at attention! He had something about him! I will never forget that as I got a ticket for 3 pounds fifty! Great man and my hero! I had long hair and looked like a scruff bag! He still did the right thing though! Love you Brian!
Nottingham Forest, average second division club before Clough, average second division club after Clough, EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS when he was their manager. Point proven.
David Marchant he outstayed his welcome. When the premier league was in its infancy, and exploded in wealth, Forest were a big boy in the league, it was a land grab and they were up there challenging. A couple of seasons in, Clough was dragging them down. In the late 70s and throughout the 80s he was, for me, undisputably the best manager in the world. But by the early 90s, well I don't need to spell out the problems he has outside of football that he dragged into Forest and dragged them down .... should have been replaced sooner, I think
By giving way and buying the tie he 'owned' Clive forever. Still Clough did buy the tie. Strange personality Mr Clough. He pulled much the same stunt with the Forest coach driver once. Clough stopped the bus for the team to go for an impromptu run round a park and told the driver he had to go too as if he drove the bus for the best team in the land he had to be the fittest bus driver in the land!
Hi Clive, its been a long time, but i too have some stories about Brian.....think we travelled together on a few of their plane journeys abroad 79/80........mainly eastern block for me.... Sadly the other Brian T passed away a few months ago, but met Martin J again. Cheers
It’s like the scene in Casino where Ace wants an equal number of blueberries in each muffin. Top managers in any area know that it’s the details that’ll make or break you.
He`s fine as a commentator but annoys the hell out of me cos he always says Alec Ferguson instead of ALEX , I remember in snooker , John Virgo always said Alec Higgins, equally annoying !!!
Best story I heard was an apprentice was tidying up the boot room and answered the phone when it rang. Young man, this is Brian Clough, make a cup of tea and bring it to my office. The apprentice answered f**k off and slammed the phone down. The phone rang again, do you know who I am? Yes Mr Clough, do you know who I am? No, I don’t young man. Well, f**k off again. Phone slammed down again. Great man manager, who had his set of standards, and stuck to them. Only manager I know who would substitute his best player of the day if he thought he had been rude to the ref.
+simon connell Busby, Shankley, Paisley and Ferguson were all great managers. I don't think Clough was as good.... He was better. I don't think any of the aforementioned managers could have achieved what he did at Forest. That will never be done again anywhere in world football. The man is, was and always will be the greatest. An absolute genius.
Agreed but Ferguson was better he did it in Scotland and then went to United and we all know Wat he did there he changed the way football was both very good and clough would off been England manager English football would ov changed for the better
I don't personally agree that Ferguson was "Better" admittedly he won everything there was to win but to do it at United who were back then the biggest club on the planet with biggest chequebook and a reputation that attracted all the biggest players in the world. Nowadays United are no longer the biggest and other clubs have more money to spend. Cough did everything on a shoes string budget and won back to back European titles (something that ferguson failed to achieve) with players that were deemed over the hill and no other club wanted. The same feat would be to take Preston (who are currently in the same spot that forest were when cough took charge) gaining promotion from the championship then winning the premier next season followed by back to back champions league titles. I doubt Ferguson could have done that. It will never happen again. Money has ruined the sport.
Yes I love those type of values sadly I've got some good ones but I've got lots of bad ones too .I wish I had been taught very early in !ife about the bad ones .I never ever smoked .or told dirty jokes in front of females .and never hit a girl.I learnt that from my parents but they also taught me that's it's ok to gamble and drink.those two demons led me to compulsive gambling and alcoholism. Not had a drink for 15 years now but it has done a lot of damage to my mental state and health and gambling lost me my family all my hard earned money and their was a small fortune and most of all IT LOST ME AS A DECENT MAN
