Strike Animation from Tascione Clock Repair Course
Clock repair is a fun and rewarding hobby that often evolves into a part or even full time income.
The basic operation of a normal time only mechanical clock mechanism is fairly easy to understand but when a clock is required to strike out the hours things tend get a lot more complicated.
There are two common striking mechanisms. The earlier of the two is the count wheel and it's successor is the rack and snail. The animations in this video excerpt are meant for those who may just need a little more help visualizing how this early count wheel striking mechanism works. The count wheel strike is found in many older clocks. American time and strike, antique cuckoo, grandfather clocks; the list goes on.
If your interests lie in antique clock repair then it's a must to completely understand how this type of striking works. Between this video and many other videos up here on youtube you should quickly grasp the concept of the goings on behind the scene of this fascinating and fun strike train. The interaction between all of the levers and wheels appears daunting at first but you'll soon see that it's all just basic mechanics and not nearly as complicated as first thought. The design is ingenious and made for a strong and dependable striking train. You'll find some variants to this mechanism but they are all fundamentally the same. If you learn the basic principals of how this mechanism works you can easily figure out those variations.
Also having a good understanding of this strike is important before tearing down the movement. They come apart easily but can be a real bear when it comes time for re-assembly without possessing a full understanding of its function. If understood then all of those levers and pins will make perfect sense and setting up the strike during reassembly should be a breeze. Studying and knowing how it works can make the difference between an enjoyable clock repair experience or a struggling and possibly discouraging one.
So I hope you enjoy this video. If you still feel you would like to dig a little deeper then I highly recommend going to David LaBountys site at "abouttime-clockmaking.com" and download his excellent pdf file titled "The Levers of Amercan Strike Movements" When you get to his site just click on the Download tab. Lot's of good free stuff there.

Thank you for this animation! I have been working on reassembling mechanisms but was having a hard time getting all the levers in the correct position.

It makes so much sense now. I tried looking at still photos, diagrams, and written descriptions, but they never made perfect, 100% sense to me. Nothing beats seeing it in moving action. Are you willing to share a clip of the rack and snail mechanism?

Good animations but the captions are horrendous gibberish. I found them so distracting that I couldn't easily follow the animation.
