Hi In this video I am taking a close look at two pairs of clogs to see how they have been constructed. This is the first part of a series in which I will be making a pair of hand cut clogs using traditional tools.
I mention Master Clog Maker Jeremy Atkinson who has written a Shire Album on "Clogs and Clog Making", and he makes lovely hand cut clogs in the traditional way.

Another great film, I remember quite a few people wearing clogs in the 70’s and making sparks on the floor, in the dark with the clog irons. I live in Bolton Lancashire and clogs were very popular here. I look forward to the clog making series, take care, regards, Chris.

This is going to be great! I wore clogs all the time during the late 60's. Wish I still had a pair from back then. Looking forward to learning! Thanks, Harry!

You might be interested to know that no less a personage than Charlie Chaplin started as a clog-dancer (aged 10) in the "Eight Lancashire Lads". He was singled out in an early newspaper report with the high praise of being the best clog-dancer the reviewer had seen on stage in Bolton in the last six months. Perhaps you could perform a clog-dance as the climax of this video series, Harry -- we could then all comment that it's the best clog-dance we've seen on RU-vid (in self-made clogs) in the last six months! Fascinating stuff, as always, Harry, and please keep up the excellent work (with or without a climactic clog-dance sequence)...

I wasn't interested your previous shoe-making videos (because I prefer making pre-modern turnshoes or boots, etc.) "when you do again woodworking videos?", but now you got my attention. I've planned to make some day half leather half wooden clogs for summer farmwork.

I wore clogs for farm work until the early Seventies. A lot better for your feet though they did take some getting used to. I wish you well on making your own pair.

Jeremy has so much knowledge, I think he should write an in depth book, though I appreciate a lot of this has to be learnt by the right type of person who has a natural feel for this!

Wonderful video. Thank you. I'm learning a lot. I was gifted a pair of shoes like yours, only with more metal on the bottom and mine are a size 8. Not sure how old they are, but it has metal eyelets and the soles at least look manufactured on mass. I just need to figure out how to stop the mould then it would be fun to try making a pair. Looking forward to getting your book and watching more of your videos.
@harryrogers

Thanks, some neatsfoot oil will revive them if the leather is very dry and it will probably make them less porus to mould.

@@harryrogers Thank you! I've never worked with leather this old before so I didn't know if there was anything special I needed to worry about. But it's about the same as I usually do (love neatsfoot oil!).

I'm really excited about this series! Those are beautiful pieces of footwear. I found a pair of leather women's shoes in GGG Aunt Sue's log cabin that were in about the same shape as your clogs but they cleaned and oiled up very well with harness oil. If you clean yours, please show us how they turned out, before and after.

"410 Long" in plastic the ones I used in the 1970s were paper. My grandad used to make the irons and repair clogs in a cotton mill town Blacksmiths. My dad would like to create sparks on the flags and cobbles all before tarmac came along.

Hello. I'm in the US and found a toddler pair size 14cm clogs that look identical to the second pair you featured in this video, although they are without the horseshoe on the bottom. Are these rare, valuable, or should I just use them as decoration? Also, why would a toddler be wearing a working class shoe? A little too young to be in the workforce right? Any input would be appreciated, thanks!
@harryrogers
@harryrogers 3 года назад
Hello, generally they are not of great value, but are an interesting bit of history to enjoy. Here in the UK clogs were worn just as shoes would be, though in some areas they were more common, especially in the mill towns as depicted in LS Lowery paintings. Children used to spark their clogs on cobbles...striking the irons underneath on some types.

Right I did not know Walkleys was still in business. The clogs I bought were hand made but that must bec30 or so years ago. Sadly due to covid colne valley museum is currently closed, I just hope it survives. Lots of rich history of the weavers cottages in Golcar where the museum is situated, just bring your coat, it is very high above sea level there and gets very chilly. Scapegoat hill which is just above Golcar is 328 metres above sea level. Brrrrrrŕgghhhh.
