For those that don't want to sit through it; Cut about 5" off the tip of new growth of the tree you want to clone, take off the lower leaves, dip the cut tip in Honey, then dip in cinnamon, poke a small 1/2 hole in a potato and stick the cutting in. If you have a greenhouse enclosure, put in there to keep warm. - This was great to learn & I think may try.

Can I replace honey and cinnamon with the rooting hormone sold at the nursery? Is it the same with berry bushes?
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 3 года назад
@@Rick_Sanchez_C137_ Just be aware that 90% or more fruit trees are grafted onto a suitable rootstock. When you take a cutting like this bloke, you won't have a tree on a rootstock so your tree will be susceptible to root disease. That's why grafting is done. Save yourself a lot of wasted time and buy a grafted fruit tree from your nursery. You will get fruit many years sooner.

That is a great idea, especially as the tree will grow true to type and quicker than being propagated from seed. As you say, the clones can be planted in different positions as an experiment to finding the optimum site for the tree - and a back up if the original is damaged. Another thing I learned, was that cinnamon has those 'rooting' properties. Cinnamon is my favourite sweet spice, but I never knew that it had that additional purpose. Very clever that, given that someone will always have some cinnamon and no need to buy the more expensive rooting hormone! Thanks, great tips all 'round!

Well, um, yeah.. If you're going to make videos for any length of time it's expected you would have the right equipment. Even a HelmetCam would suffice, and the rigging costs maybe 10$.. The other thing that surprised me was when making that hole in the potato you didn't cut it into an "X" format. Certainly you wouldn't rubbed of all the cinnamon and honey on the tip by forcing it in twice. That stuff is there very precariously. anuyways, and you have to insert the shoot perfectly the very first time . Just my 2 cents here.. the potato thing is a good advice though, and a tested and true approach though.. works good for weed too...

Never tried it this way . Just cutting a branch close to the stem that is not yet too woody, but getting there and putting it in soil and water with a few branches usually had a good effect on me (usually 3 out of 5 survive and become a new tree). I guess I would get ants and wasps with the honey ; if I'd have seen a follow up I'd have definetely tried it this way and see the results just out of curousity; now I am really wondering if this all will work, haha. Though a potatoe should have a lot of nutrients for the plant

Hi...I would like to clone some apple trees up here in Canada. I am trying some this spring but would like to do it in the fall as well. Can you tell me how the fall application of cloning the hard wood parts
@joshuawaltrip8050
@joshuawaltrip8050 2 года назад
@@valleysgardens6697 there are different ways to approach cloning. Most important things are to keep the whole cutting moist without it molding. Warmth helps speed up root growth but is not necessary. One time I piled up some branches, from fall thinning of a plum tree, in a shady place it rained most of winter and in the spring I moved the branches and the ones touching the soil produced roots. I was amazed. I usually approach cloning by using some neutral soil with extra perlite in a big pot, 20gal+, filled six inches and just plug cutting directly into the soil. You could also use separate pots and smaller sizes or even use plastic bottles. They should be kept in a shade location outside and the cutting size can vary most people do six inches to a foot. You can use cloning solution, b1 , mycorrhizae, or any type of root promoter. But most important is to water often very let it dry. And be patient because you won’t see results until spring.

Andi Amador It has to do with the hormones produced only by the cental leader which emerges at about 3 years of age. Some apple trees can be topped and their form doesn't require that central leader. Bu peach, pear, plum...all do. I'm unsure on citrus. I espalier several tree forms and I have to wait for that cental leader to emerg before I can branch out onto forms. When the tree reaches the height I am ready to stop at...I can then cut that center branch and the lowers on forms take off. I can use that top cut to clone the original tree...a little root hormone perilite and water. I suppose you could try to use a branch...but I think you'll get a weak bush rather than a long living tree. Its all about that hormone.

@@jeas4980 Well, that all sounds like important stuff to know and consider, since a lot of time (sometimes years) and effort are invested in fruit trees, and nobody wants to end up with a poor or non-viable one. So thanks. I do know that many have different root stock and grafting in order to have a regionally hardy/viable fruit tree with better product and production.

A screwdriver might replace the scissors and some root stimulant replace the cinnamon. I would like to see the results too. It seems like a workable possibility though.

Cut the stem with the rubbed in alcohol sizers and dropped in the dirt. But hey, like in restaurant when dropped something on the floor, if less than 3 seconds it's considered clean. That stem cutting was the most exciting moment, it totally woke me up. This guy should read the books to kids when the bed time.

Remember- maggots ar eNOT sponateous - they are laid. That said, if the potato is washed this MIGHT mitigate the rotting-with -maggots problem you rightly point out 👍.

I appreciate the new knowledge, however, you could have accomplished this in 6 minutes. I know when I see a video that is over 10 minutes I usually don't click on it because likely somewhere else on youtube some other gardener has already accomplished the transfer of knowledge with brevity. Keep them coming!

While I've never cloned a Blood Orange tree, I have done quite a few Pecan and Walnut trees, and you make this SO MUCH HARDER than it has to be (unless I am missing something unique to Blood Orange Trees). Simply take a 1-qt paint can (you can get new ones at Home Depot for $2 each, that have never had anything in them)...lay hardware cloth over the top opening (rabbit hutch wire), mix up some mild 'simple syrup' (sugar water) and fill can to top, then put your 'cuttings' through the hardware wire holes into the sugar water! That's it...they sprout root systems LIKE CRAZY! (if you place outside, you'll get lots of bees and wasps too...due to the sugar water...so be careful). If you take a top-end clipping, you may or may not need to 'wax' over the trunk location where the cutting was taken, depending on pest-load, cutting size, etc.

I've only watched part one and thought this is stupid because they're getting absolutely no oxygen to their roots. I wanted to see if it actually worked and was looking through the comments to see if it was referenced anywhere. I see I was right. If you want your clones to root faster, give them oxygenated water and change that oxygenated water as often as you can. No nutrients or anything funky. That's how you do it. Separately, the reason for the honey could be that it is an antifungal. I wouldn't recommend it though.
