Around 6:30 , talking about Clifford and how he gets fed. In the book, "Clifford Gets A Job", it is established Emily Elizabeth's family has been struggling to pay for all the food Clifford needs to eat, thus setting off the events of this book where Clifford begins to seek employment so that he can pay for his own food. The story concludes by Clifford becoming a volunteer watch dog for the local police station. The police station is unable to pay him, but offers to provide food for Clifford so he can continue volunteering. Source: I'm a kindergarten teacher and read the Clifford books regularly. p.s. One chat member suggested that Clifford got so big because his family loved him so much. This is never established in the original books. In fact, the reason Clifford is so big is never addressed in the original books. In the book "Clifford's Family", Clifford visits his immediate and some of his extended family, all of which are the size of normal dogs. Emily Elizabeth was based off of Norman Bridwell's, the original author of Clifford, daughter. The original story was written about his daughter, actually named Emily Elizabeth, and how she was so small compared to her dog. Clifford is the imagination of a young girl who loves her dog and not only has the perspective of a child, but has childlike eyes in which she sees the world around her, especially her most favorite things. As a result, she sees her "big dog" as a "gargantuan giant". The fact that the family struggled to pay for Clifford's food is not because he was so big (though, that is probably part of it), but actually because the family was operating on a tight budget, but since the book is written from the perspective of Emily Elizabeth, she has little understanding of financial responsibility, and likely assumes it's just because Clifford is so big. Norman's wife encouraged him to pursue being an illustrator for children's book, though struggled to find any publishers for nearly 2 years until Scholastic, in 1963, published "Clifford the Big Red Dog", likely resulting in a lengthy period of time in which the family had a tight budget to live on.
