In this video, I start off by hiking to the top of a mountain in Phoenix, AZ to fly my Mavic Mini. At the top, I get some awesome footage, but a helicopter comes to join the party. It's awfully close - what happens with the Mavic Mini? Watch to find out!

I just want to quickly explain why seeing something like this is important. Everyone flying drones need to realize that aircraft such as helicopters, paragliders, etc, are all over in our same airspace, whether you see it or not! Class G airspace (which is where drone flight is open to anyone, outside of which requires ATC authorizations) is home to other aircraft as well. We, as drone pilots, ALWAYS MUST WITHOUT QUESTION *yield the right-of-way to other aircraft*. Drone hobbyists by no means need more FAA regulations restricting our hobby so no matter what altitude you take off from, always make sure to look out for other aircraft and be ready at a moment's notice to land your drone and get it out of harms way ASAP if another aircraft is anywhere nearby! My back was turned to the helicopter in this case, which is why I reacted when I did. If I had been facing the direction of the helicopter and had known it was heading right for North Mountain, then I would have landed even sooner. Fly safe out there and happy flying!

Actually you moron drone flyers need to be restricted to 50' above sea level. If you are so stupid as to fly without somebody spotting you should not be flying. You morons are the reason the FAA is going to ruin the radio control model airplane flying.

You did the right thing. All it would take to invite even stricter drone regulation is an incident with an aircraft, or heaven forbid, a medical chopper. The great utility of the Mavic Mini is that you avoid much of the FAA's increasing regulatory stranglehold. Nice vids!

Thank you, Darrin! I appreciate you seeing where I’m coming from here. Most people are concerned in thinking me flying there was dumb, even though it is a safe flight space. Helicopters flying around happens, and people’s denial of it happening in the same airspace us drone pilots fly in is what will actually cause accidents. Always look out out there and fly safe!

Helis are by far the biggest threat to drone close calls. They can fly low above ground, often find paths below low cloud ceilings and they fly fast, leaving little time to react. Wearing noise cancelling earbuds is therefore not a good idea: need to listen carefully for them: at least, they make a lot of noise!

I once lost video feed from my P3S. When I looked at the video on the SD card, I had come within 2 feet of crashing into the A/C unit on top of a 14 story bldg. Several blocks away.

Yikes! Lost video feed is frightening in itself but being that close to crashing, dang! I’ve never come close to crashing when losing signal luckily enough but even still any time signal is lost, my stomach drops

So the lesson here is, manned aircraft have ADS-B transmitters. Drones should have ADS-B receivers so operators can receive notification from nearby or incoming aircraft.

Just a Comment that might be helpfull, I notice you where using your airpods while recording the walking footage. Usually I hear helicopters before I am able to see them. Having earpods can reduce your ability to hear a helicopter approching. You took the correct action of lowering your UAS and keeping it far and away from any manned aircraft in the area. Helicopters can sneek up on you very easily. This is why it is imperative pilots have constant visual on your UAS to take evasive action if needed. Thanks for sharing the experience.

I appreciate you bringing this up, as a couple others have as well. I will admit that I was wearing the AirPods during the first flight I made mid-video but those were also in ‘Transparency Mode’ which is as if they aren’t in your ears at all (AKA: no noise canceling)! After that flight though, I realized before flying at the very top of the mountain that I probably shouldn’t fly with those in just for concerns of them dying and also I honestly prefer just listening to the drone with my own ears opposed to having that transparency on. Thanks for commenting constructive criticism in a comment section made up of mostly criticism!

Just remember. You can fly 400 ft up from the point you are standing and 400 feet out I believe. But, when you are up that high you really don't need to go the max. Like you quickly learned, It could put you in direct danger of striking an Aircraft. They are not supposed to be flying under 400 ft but Police, Fire, Military and News Helicopters often do. Thankfully you were flying close in. Good job.

In California just about every hiking trail mountain within city limits already have a “no drones allowed” sign. Law enforcement are sort of relax on the rules but the PEOPLE!!! OMG they demand the electric chair on you for not obeying the RULES!!! I cannot enjoy a flight knowing a “get off my trail” old whacko will scream at me.

I’m kinda surprised that this mountain didn’t have any signs like that but from the numerous days I went hiking there, there was no signs anywhere that I saw that prohibited drones from flying! Luckily the old people I saw on the trail didn’t say anything to me as far as I could tell, I just saw them look up the drone for a couple of seconds and then looked a second time lol. Fly safe!

I was in that location in Phoenix, AZ up the mountain Dec 2019. It's truly a magnificent location but I didn't have any kind of aerial photo drone yet at that time. So the photos I had where just thru my cellphone underneath those cell and transmitter towers. I saw those paragliders launching from that mountain. I didn't hike up but drive my daughter's Volvo up with the family. Your reaction to the unexpected helicopter intrusion kind of freaked you out. You weren't violating FAA regulations did you? Mavic mini doesn't even require registration. I now own a Mavic air 2 thanks to you and other UAV camera enthusiast vloggers on you tube. I have a recreational license from FAA with a number taped in my drone. I bought this drone not so much for photography but for the flying experience as an rc helicopter, airplane pilot that I have to manually control using the larger transmitter without the air of software. Am not sure whether the fly app version that you used at the time of your video already had that warning of manned aircraft in the vicinity. I have flown only a few times with the 400ft limit as I live close to Newark, NYC, crowded skies. The warning built in the software sure pays for itself. I have to learn more on the camera techniques and have not tried autonomous flying thru the DJI app. Will keep watching your channel. BTW, a Mavic mini fly more is in it way taking advantage of Amazon's prime day pricing that saved me $100.

Of course the Mini isn't perfect, it has some flaws and limitations. But if you understand them you can do a lot of good movies with the Mini.

That's why I plan to buy a Mavic 2 or 3 this year but will be waiting until DJI put the ADBS system into the new drones delivered after 1 Jan 2020. Although this sort of thing is exceedingly rare, I could never forgive myself if I caused a crash with my drone.

Dont feel bad i fly in los angeles. I live 2 blocks from the L.A. river i was flying on the banks and i heard alot of noise coming my way up ahead so i lowered my quad then bam a squadron of military helicopters flew over head pretty dam low with the doors open with the guns hanging out the sides.so from now on i go down in the river and fly for those who never been to L.A. the Los Angeles river is a man made concrete river. U can go down the bank into the river the only time its a river with water flowing down it is when it rains the sheriff helicopters fly above it i guess as a landmarker as long as u fly in the river im not a hazard of any kind of way. Plus if they fly to low there are high power towers. Lines in certain places along the river i never fly above their height so im cool.

Earphones are not good to be wearing in any circumstances. Is like using then while driving. A matter of fact as you may konw a helicopter can be heard from a distance due to the propeller noise if you are not wearing earphones, the good thing is that the noise reduction on your earbugs works!!!. Lessons learn...avoid the use of earphones. Thank you for the video which are always interesting. May God bless you and fly safe!

According to City of Phoenix, parks are designated "No Drone Zones" with the exception of the few parks designated as an RC flying area AND require you to be a member of the AMA. Phoenix has jurisdiction of launching or landing operations on public city property but they have zero authority over airspace. The closest park that allows drone launching or landing operations is Mountain View Park, located along 7th Ave on the Southwest side of the mountain range you were flying from. Flying near the towers looked pretty epic, but keep in mind there may be other laws you weren't aware of that you may have been breaking related to photography of critical infrastructure, but probably not. Most likely a Karen reported you for flying because they thought you shouldn't be having fun. Medflights to the JCL heliport as well as Phoenix PD rotorcraft fly that mountain pass often and at low altitude AGL enroute to and from KDVT airport so extra care should be taken in that area to avoid close calls. @@carsonmtech what you should do is have flight aware 24, or radarbox, installed on a tablet with 4g connection, at least you would have your own radar like system. Or use a laptop with adsb live flight tracking.

That was a completely separate day. All clips of the paraglider dude were taken from the ground with my mirrorless Panasonic camera (not a drone). Also, the paraglider guy thought me taking photos and videos of him was cool; enough so he yelled down his email address so I could email him the footage I got lol

As far as I am concerned that helicopter had no business interfering with your drone flight. Who's world is it anyway? The FAA thinks it belongs to them not the mere lowly inhabitants. I'm glad you has the balls to air this. But it just gave the FAA another perfect example for taking their Remote ID plan to the extreme.

Love your videos ,a lot of people learn from your videos but as a reminder we do not need to give people such as FAA the tools to further restrict and remove our ability to fly these drones. Videos like this are damaging to drone Pilots

I agree. However, in this instance, I was clearly flying in airspace that was okay to fly in, it just so happened that a helicopter was flying in that same (class G) airspace. This is something that can happen to absolutely anyone, no matter the altitude. Helicopters tend to fly in the same airspace as us, so we, as drone pilots always need to make sure to do as I did in this video and YIELD the right-of-way (without question) to other aircraft (such as helicopters) to prevent the FAA from cracking down more on rules and regulations. Fly safe out there!

The drone flown in this video is the DJI Mavic Mini. It does not have ADS-B AirSense like the DJI Mavic Air 2 does!

That wasn’t flying. That was filmed on my Panasonic G85. Also, the parasailing guy literally flew over and yelled down his email so I could send the videos and photos I got of him to him. lol.

Helicopters where im from annoy me, its mostly medical choppers so their doing a great thing but they fly so low you cant hear em in time and not all of em register with flight aware. So theres no warning at all.

I live close to a helipad of a hospital so there are always choppers flying around... But there is also a no fly zone for 1.5 km around this helipad and for another few km I can't fly higher than 50 meters (also because of the airport somewhere behind the helipad :P). But especially medical helicopters can come down anywhere at any time, I had them landing right next to me several times in the most unexpecting places !

All medical helicopters are required to have ads-b which is one of the data sources fightaware uses and they should pop up on flightaware. As of Jan 1 2020 most every helicopter is required to have ADS-B in accoradance with far 91.225 so if you weren’t seeing them you should see them now. Safe flying

If you actually look at the footage of when this occurred while I was flying atop the mountain, those were NOT in my ears. I will admit that they were in the previous flying I was doing mid-video but A.) those were in ‘Transparency Mode’ so I could hear all outside things going on (it’s as if they aren’t even in at all) B.) Did you not watch the video whatsoever? I address that. I show NUMEROUS apps and even go a step further to reading a sectional chart & talking about the type of airspace.

I think you just got unlucky there. The thing with helicopters is if your are up-wind, they can be on you before you know it. We have RAF jets doing low level exercises in the mountains near me which annoys me. You'd have thought the days of 'manned' killing machines was coming to an end.

Lmfaoooo that's definitely not the area to fly in broski but I give you an E for Effort.. But if you lived in AZ for at least a year, idk how long you've been here but heard you say you were from Indiana, We all know in the winter months (All 2 of them lmao) it gets dark quick and the sun sets between 5 and 5:30PM.. But a real nice spot to fly is over by thunderbird mountain or out here in surprise out at the White tanks. I wish I had some of my Drone portfolio left but my backups were all corrupted in a freak flood accident.. Oh the good clips i've got from my phantoms lol, If you thought that helicopter was an intense moment, Try coming face to face with the damn jets over at luke airforce base or the jumbos down at sky harbor XD Of course this was before there was any type of restrictions for drones but damn let me tell you its a adrenaline rush! Great video, although you did tight right thing with respect to the police chopper checking you out, this does illustrate exactly why the FAA is making Remote ID law. Great job though!

Yes! If not shot from a drone (which all shots were from the DJI Mavic Mini), then the shots were taken on my Panasonic G85. Only exception was towards the end when I was in a stairwell which was filmed quickly on my iPhone 11 Pro Max

I'm in Indy also and fly everything from 7" Long Range Kwads to 65mm Whoops. I just got my Mavic Mini 3 days ago! Loving it so far! Doing some mods to the Controller and to the Drone (for longer range)!

Great Video beautiful views. Wow that was scary....That is the type of area that probably shouldn't allow drones.. If people government see your video they will probably restrict that area... I would give up flying in areas like that but I think they are wrong not letting us fly in State and National Parks at least drones that are know not to be a fire risk...

Pigeon s are hevier than that of the DJI Mavic Mini. Even if it hits any part of any aircraft it would not make any damage. FAA rules are BS fir the most part.

Great video. Your explanation and you flying skills were spot on. As you explained, it did look like the cop chopper was scoping you out. Maybe the folks that were pointing to your drone got a case of the modern day paranoids.
