It took a lot of close observation, having the right gear and fast action to save my new African Cichlids! It's things like this that get people to quit and give up keeping African Cichlids. I get it! Let's talk about what happened and how I managed to avoid a cichlid aggression disaster!

Nice job staying ahead of the aggression. My personal opinion I'd give them 7 - 10 days if they look good add them to the big tank 😎
@BenOchart

Tempting. I usually go 30 days but I have to weigh that against what impact keeping them in a tight enclosed space might have.

Yeah, I have been dealing with random aggression that pops up out of nowhere. I lost a Blue Blood dragon, John Stoni, and a Buccochromis nototaenia. It has made me pull my hair out, I always wanted a peacock and hap tank since I was a kid. There are a few others I want but I don't want to keep killing fish the dividers give me hope. It's been a few months since the last and it seems like everything died down so I don't want to upset the balance. It was never one particular fish that picked on one of the 3 above. The alpha never cared he seems like the most chill. But yeah that is a beautiful tank thank you for the info.

I hope your scene mellows out. ACs are stunning but not for everybody. I kept getting rid of bullies until I finally got a peaceful group. That can be frustrating and expensive.

Ben, Way to catch the aggression. Af Cichlids always like rolling the dice on their behavior. lol. Glad you were able to separate them. Here's hoping the quarantine process works out. Thanks for sharing the details and struggles even long term fish keeper like yourself go through.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 3 месяца назад
Thanks Jeremy. It comes with the territory for those crazy enough to try and keep highly aggressive and territorial fish in a limited size glass box. Fingers crossed that things smooth out and don't go nuts when QT is over and they go into the 300 gal.

Ben I have a blue cobalt in quarantine for two months now he’s having a good time by his self .I’m nervous to put him the main tank worried he will get beat up. Like you said you get attach to these guys .
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 3 месяца назад
I like to add a few fish at a time. I thing it reduces the chances of a fish getting singled out and beat up. But I have been successful adding just one. I add him then turn the lights out, but keep watching the tank to make sure that his cichlid tank initiation isn't too hard.

Oh yeah, that is so common with African cichlids!😅 I think they will be Ok for the rest of the quarantine period. I also think the aggression will be well spread in the 300 gals tank. Good luck, Ben!

The red empress and fire hap are the same fish (protomelas taeniolatus) just different locales. I would expect problems with those two.
@BenOchart
@BenOchart 3 месяца назад
Yes. It seems like the “fire haps” get a bit bigger and are more aggressive. Has that been your experience?
@GC_Aquariums
@GC_Aquariums 3 месяца назад
@@BenOchart I’ve heard that yes. The one you had in California was fairly aggressive if I remember right. The only protomelas I’ve ever kept was a juvenile Taiwan reef for a few months, so I haven’t had any experience with this exact fish. Similar fish sometimes don’t mix well. Your Trout is still my favorite.
