This is our cover version of the progressive rock epic, Close To The Edge by Yes!
Ann Marie Nacchio - Vocals
Chris Clark - Keyboards
Andy Grazaino - Guitars/Vocals
Richie Castellano - Bass/Vocals
Andy Ascolese - Drums/Vocals
Jarrett Pressman - Foley FX
Additional Ambient FX by Richie Castellano
Mixed and Edited by Richie Castellano
This goes with Band Geek episode 140 which can be found here:
• Band Geek 140 - Chris ...
A few people have been asking about the production of this. We recorded live in the same room together. We all have separate monitor mixes in our Audio-Technica headphones via the MOTU 1248. The final product you're seeing is comprised of a few takes from this session. I'm one guy doing all the production myself so I do need to stop to fix cameras, monitors, etc... We recorded MIDI data from the drums and keyboards. During the mix phase, I used BFD3 and Abbey Road Drum Libraries instead of the stock Roland sounds. Most of the keyboard sounds are directly from Chris's keyboards, but some of the Mellotrons and Synths are coming from IK Multimedia SampleTank. The guitar and bass tones are all coming from the Line 6 Helix.
Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, I'm blown away by these comments. I just want to clarify something here. This isn't a bunch of music snobs showing off. This is genuine love for Yes and their music. We are hardcore Yes fans and this video is not about conquering a song or doing it better than anyone. It's about the joy of indulging our inner teenagers and being lucky enough to get the opportunity to play our favorite music. Andy, Andy and I had a band in high school and dreamed of playing this. We never could get the vocals or keyboards right. We were very fortunate to have Chris Clark and my wife help us make this dream a reality. Thank you for watching. I'll probably run into some of you guys on the next Yes or ARW tour. I'll be the one in the audience screaming his head off!

So glad to read you are not snobs showing off ! You make me rediscover that extremely beautiful piece of music that I have always cherished most of all. Bravo to all musicians (and singers). It was worth waiting Chris Clark on keyboard : extremely good job ! Thank you for this moment ! 🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍

Richie Castellano I havent read all the comments but if anyone is offering negative criticism I’ll be happy to kick them in the jimmy. What you said comes straight across in your performance. You have generously shared your love of this music that people like me grew up on and love. All I see is an amazing performance, respect for the art and a moment to share something really special and to connect with me your grateful audience. I name this song as the single most important one to me personally. It opened wide the world of music to me. Not just prog. It gave me the ability to get into everything from abba to Zappa. No shit. You guys are friggin awesome and I thank you for putting in what it takes to honor all the great music that you do.

I think that's why it is so spectacular...because Yes wasn't a bunch of music snobs showing off either, it was a bunch of guys that got together to play the music that felt right to them. I think most people don't realize or lose sight of this because the music that flowed out of them just happened to be, more often than not, more complex and possibly harder to access than other stuff in rock and pop music. I, too, dreamed of being able to play this song in high school, and although that will not happen for me in this lifetime, I am quite pleased and thrilled to see that you and your band mates have done Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick, and Bill very proud! Congrats, thanks again, and as always, float your climb!!!

I thought what was the point of even trying to recreate this genius piece of music... Then I after listening to this it was obvious this is our classical music for people born in the 1960's and it should be performed like the works of of Mozart, Chopin with reverence and homage.

My opinion: the song’s emotional climax (the last chorus of “I get up, I get down…” in the final 90 seconds) is more moving when she sings it than when Jon does. She’d built up to that peak moment and it feels more “earned” than with Jon. I can’t explain it any better.

13th September 2022, just a few months away, Close to the Edge will be 50 years old. Never in all those 50 years did I at any time expect anyone to attempt a cover of this song and do it justice but what you guys have done here has exceeded every expectation I might have harboured during those 50 years. When you got to the "Now that you find, now that you're whole" line, I realised that I had temporarily stopped breathing and was almost in tears. Astonishing stuff. decks82 hello from the states from a fellow Brit, the term “old fart” is relative. At the age of 66 I consider it to be a badge of honor, besides a few aches I feel pretty much the same. I relate to this song so so much, I remember always getting high to this song in my dorm in 1971. A brilliant rendition everything spot on the vocals could be an octave higher, still very good....cheers!
@edburns00

I thought I had seen the best cover in the "Close to the Yes" version, and indeed the vocalist in that version has an energy and spark that is very different from Ms. Castellano. However, the humor and coral electric sitar-sim in this one puts it on top. I had the chance to see Wakeman on his raconteur tour and his humor is evident here. The only thing I'd suggest is having the drummer eat ramen noodles, as Wakeman famously did during the Tales tour when he got bored.

I'm a totally blind keyboard player from New Jersey and all my life, from the time I first found progressive rock, I wished I could be in a band with musicians this this good that would want to do this kind of music to an audience that would be accepting and appreciative to listen to it. Never found that combination, sadly. At 46 years of age, I'm beginning to think I never will. Hell, I'd have to work really hard to nail this. It's so awesome that you guys click so well, record this stuff, put it on youtube and amazingly, have fans who love it, including me. I give thumbs up to all of you, including and especially the keyboard player for nailing my favorite part, the church organ through the solo into the last verse. Great stuff. Having read Mike Tiano’s piece on Something Else Reviews about how Yes had to change the key of the coda of CTTE when playing it live, i came back to listen to this fantastic performance again. The section from ‘now that its all over and done’ absolutely blows your head off. Anne Marie throws everything into that top note; its very moving. Unbeatable.
@markdaniels7174
@markdaniels7174 Год назад
I feel the same way about Ann Marie’s final two minutes. She really takes us to that peak emotional moment in the song, and to me it feels even more “earned” than when Jon sings it! It’s a well-deserved joyous high after all that had come before.

I love this piece of music, and it connected with something deep since the first day I heard it, but you unlocked something in its sound by the way you hit the notes and it was cathartic. I periodically always come back to this and appreciate Richie's comments again about being incredible YES fans and honoring them and their timeless music. Saw Jon this summer with the young Rock Academy celebrate 50th anniversary of Close To The Edge. Wonderful! To me, with all the other accolades of their musicianship and song writing abilities, YES music evokes FEELING like no other music I know. Close To The Edge, perhaps, evokes it more than any other of YES's masterpieces! That's why I sill love them more than 50 years later! Richie and the Band Geeks, you are wonderful musicians, so talented and I likes your taste in music!!

I have seen "Yes" play 131 times over the years, since my first Yes gig in 1969, when I played truant from school to get to the venue in London. I love all kinds of music/genres/artists etc BUT "Yes" Music is the only music that 'does it' for me. I have lost count of the times I have dreamed of being good enough to be able to play any Yes song. So to see this version is most welcome, heart-warming and damn exciting, knowing that there is another generation coming through who will keep their music alive/live. I doff my cap to you guys (excellent musicians one and all) and hope to see you play in the UK at some point. "Thank-You". :O))))). ps: With a little practise I think I could play the 2 Glass jars at the beginning! :O)

Obviously all of you are incredible musicians to start, but managing all of the vocal arrangements in this song just puts it over the top for not only this Yes song, but any Yes cover I've ever heard! I also want to give extra credit to the drummer for playing this song on what appears to be an older rubber pad Roland kit, AND getting some reading time in during his coffee break! That is truly making the most of your time and equipment.. haha. Incredible job by all of you.

Should speak volumes as to how beautifully you folks did this. As with Floyd's Wish You Were Here LP being their pinnacle so it was with Yes' Close To The Edge LP. We were so lucky to have grown up with this music. Thank you for doing this with such style and perfection.
