Closure of Great Victoria Street Station, Belfast, Northern Ireland - Friday 10th May 2024 

Grand Central Station will be a new era for Belfast’s trains, but also a throwback to the days when trains were respected enough to have grand buildings built for them.

They've got short memories - most of the original station (which opened in 1839 and was rebuilt in 1848), was demolished in 1968 leaving only the outer ends of a couple of platforms - and they also closed in 1976, after which the site was completely cleared. The station that's just closed has only been there since 1995 - which was just 19 years when I was at school! It is 185 years since the first train arrived there, but they've only been doing so for 166 of them - and the newsreader seems to think it's 200...!!

It wasn’t 200 yrs of service for GVS,GVS closed in April 1976. After a feasibility study was commissioned in 1986 it was agreed that a new development on the site, incorporating the reintroduction of the Great Northern Railway, was viable. The new station was opened on 30 September 1995. No trains in GVS for twenty yrs.
