I knew this was going to be a super comprehensive video! You’re a marvel, Kathleen! Thank you! Another closure you might enjoy looking at comes from Sue at Paper Inspirations. She uses a fabric strap that closes with a jaw clip like those used for holding braces onto the tops of trousers. It’s very effective, too, however, more work is involved. 😀💞
Thank you Keryn! I went to look at Sue’s closure and it had me back in my childhood! I had that kind of clip on my jumpers when I was young, NOT the sweaters, but the skirts with straps, haha. So they worked just like the braces you are talking about. Very interesting and ingenious, really. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you Kathleen! I really like all of them but I think my favorite is still your sewed button with the two holes on the back. My new second fav is the jeans button! So easy! With the jeans button, I could still do the two holes on the back with regular elastic, correct? And maybe a thicker elastic? I have used the Tim holtz posts and like them also. When Hobby Lobby had a clearance sale, they had those posts, only their brand so I purchased several packs. Well, guess what, the screws aren’t long enough grrr. They would work for the cereal box covers but not a repurposed book cover. They told me at Lowe’s I need a specialty screw and told me where to check. I’m carrying that tiny, tiny screw in my purse until I can go there hahaha Live and learn!
Yes Donna! The jeans button is a great substitute for the regular button and you can still use the two-hole elastic. Yes, thicker elastic also works, but will have a thicker knot inside the back or on the front - if that matters. The jeans button stands about as tall as the hitch post, so has plenty of room for thicker ribbons, for instance. These metal buttons would be great on a thinner recycled book, but the nail isn't very long either.
Lots of ideas. Although I like the ribbon closures, I would end up loosing the ribbon!! I'm now using your button closure as its simple and practical, plus I have fallen heir to my mum and gran's button boxes!!!
Oh you’re very fortunate to have those button boxes! I remember my mom’s button box, but I have no idea whatever happened to it. It was pretty battered and dented - a fancy cookie tin, I think. I loved to sift through it and examine all the buttons. Thanks for watching Alison!
Hey Kathleen, been busy and haven't watched much lately. Glad to hear you again. I know this is an older video but I just wanted a refresher on covers and closures! I want to double check what you said here about getting your eyelets... was it Hobby Lobby? I often have problems with the eyelets not looking nice on the squished side, especially if they bend back lopsided!! Would love to know exactly which kind you buy - yours look great!😄
Welcome back Jeanne! Yes I get them at Hobby Lobby on the sewing notions wall. I think the brand is “sew-ology” They have cut “teeth” on the part that splits, so they split more evenly. I think you’ll like it better.

I also haven’t completed the journals yet, so I won’t have a price until I get the finished. I have a kind of formula that I follow, keeping track of time and materials used and the amount of decoration I do within the signatures. That all adds up to figure the cost. I am trying hard to keep the cost of these down, though. I’m hoping to keep them under $45. I will try to remember to speak about the when I film the final flip-through.
Are you thinking of selling at a festival or fair Suellen? I do know the area in which you sell makes a huge difference in what you can charge. I live near Santa Fe, NM and it’s a very “artsy” kind of place around here. This festival is held at a living history museum just outside of town with many many tourists and people who understand art and are somewhat prepared to pay for it. If they like it. So that’s a bonus for me. Do you happen to be a member of Junk Journal Junkies Boutique group on Facebook? You can ask all these selling kinds of questions in that special group and get great feedback from many people.
Yes I do belong to junk journals junkies on FB and I think that is where I first found you. But I get slot of good advice from them and a lot of inspiration
