I love how you’re so practical yet wise at the same time, Jamie! This was really great advice. Sometimes it’s so easy to be an unconscious shopper. Today I was shopping at Marshall’s and overheard two teenage-looking girls say “I saw these bedsheets on Tik Tok…” and I realized young people today are so influenced by what they see on social media, they may not have many original opinions of their own

That's a huge compliment, thank you! And I agree it's easy to just switch off the critical thinking zone of our minds when we are shopping. I wonder if part of that also stems from a desire to be accepted by peers (also, sense of belonging) - something I've seen play out a bit even with something like the Stanley Cups (I saw videos about girls getting bullied as they had dupes and not the real thing)

I feel like we all start buying someone else's wardrobe essentials, because we just need to start somewhere! And then figure it out through elimination... it's so hard to imagine what will be a staple without going through the trial and error phase first. Great video as always thank you ❤❤

Thank you for this! So much advice about the must-have staples is given without ever saying "if it suits your colouring and silhouette." I get really exasperated to be told I need a crisp cotton button-down, a beige trenchcoat, or anything in camel. None of these things suit me and so no, I really don't need them :-)

Beige trench or camel anything, so with you there. Those colors do absolutely nothing for me. I'm very pale, cool toned, gray-blue eyes blonde. My non black pieces are dark charcoal gray and navy. I do love my French cuff white button down, but it's never crisp lol.

I had to figure out which staples were right for me… and, it turns out, dresses and skirts are it! And jeans are NOT. 😂

Loved this video! I have definitely fallen into that trap and got tempted by items that look great in theory but would never work with the weather where I live. X

Omg that last part about buying something and then having to buy another piece to go with it really resonated with me. I’ve been looking to buy a specific kind of slip dress: the 90’s maxi silhouette that French girls wear with heeled boots. It’s a challenge because I’ve been looking for the right cut to fit my body type, as the slinky dress is not the most flattering on me. I bought the heeled boots so they can go with the dress, but I haven’t even found the right dress yet lol 😅 Good thing is I love the boots and have several outfits I can wear them with. You’ve convinced me to leave the dress alone lol

The French do this and it works for them. Travelling in Paris changed my style forever. Trench, Breton stripe, LBD, jeans, white shirt. I’ll never regret any of it.

I avoid buying tops/dresses which need unusual bras underneath (for example to keep straps concealed). I also avoid spending too much on pieces, as find my lifestyle or size change before I get my money’s worth out of them.

Great tips as usual... Definitely good timing with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale right around the corner! I'm definitely going to be more judicious with my wish list this year, and I want to keep your advice in mind. Clothing regrets = not an option in this economy, lol

Thanks Heather 🥰 And absolutely, I agree! There’s so many EOFY sales on at the moment too. Can all be very tempting can’t it? I’ve been noticing a lot more items are final sale too 👀

You’re right about not buying ‘classic’ items just because they’re classic. I like the look of trench coats, but they just don’t fit in with my needs and I would feel silly wearing one.

I feel like especially when you're building up your wardrobe, it's such an easy trap to fall into, as you're checking a box etc. It's good once you realise what does/doesn't work for you though, helps to filter out a whole lot of pieces that wouldn't be right! :)

I find too many clothing manufacturers take the lazy route of slapping ‘dry clean only’ on too many items. I often ask in the shop if any of the staff have the piece and whether they have hand washed it, the answer is usually, ‘yes’. Manufacturers need to be more realistic with their labelling.

I'm curious about this, because I have SO many items that say dry clean only, but I take the risk and wash them and they're fine. Often it's wools, but I know from my grandparents who wore 100% wool pants that it's fine to launder these on a handwash setting. I wonder if it's just to protect the store from customers coming in saying it got damaged from being washed (ie. temps too hot, popped in dryer etc)

Really needed to watch this video, thank you! I'm a bargain hunter and have compromised too much on comfort because of this. But then the emotional trigger happens again and the cycle begins!

This video is helping me sort thru what I have and doubt I will ever wear again. I keep it bc I never know when I'll need it,...and I don't.

My wardrobe is a beautiful jumble of aspirational notes and homage to old British men of dusty books and a family aristocracy that fell on hard times 150 years ago. This is the only way I can comprehend the 2 top hats, 2 derbys, multiple velvet and silk vintage smoking jackets and ridiculously oversized wool cable sweaters, and argh, the tweedy bits. I swear, I make it work though😂. All you need are the right jeans or wide leg wide wale corduroy trousers orlong black wool skirt. It's an eccentric mess, but it's mine an I wear it and love it. ❤😊😂❤

Yes, who wants to have to debobble a sweater each time you wear it. You just won't ever reach for it.
@mademoisellejaime
@mademoisellejaime Месяц назад
Absolutely! I don't mind doing this once every 5-10 wears but excessive bobbling usually means I just won't reach for it
