hi! regarding your questions: yes, I made and embroidered all the items of clothing in the video myself, except for the belt and the pouch. the belt was second hand, the pouch was made by Karl Robinson, check his work here: www.karlrobinson.co.uk
Yeah I love Karolinas humour. How nonchalantly she öet's the mail talk about the plague death... literally the tone of todays youtube hauls but words of 1608 ^^
Yeah because the plague spread by objects right? So if she didn’t iron the clothes, it means the plague was still on the cloth... I mean, am I right? I don’t know much about the plague, just making sure I got it right 😂
@@marcoantunes1813 i have no idea actually but if you didn't get it the joke was that it's not sunday so she won't be going to church - and she would only iron her clothes when she went to church. but interesting plague fact, im gonna have to look it up!
@@pushista9322 Right, fleas don't really live in clothes; they live on animals. But sharing clothing with someone who has plague-carrying fleas is still very much not a good idea.
@@jankelen Sure it's not, although fleas don't live on animals either. They can be seen in their fur while they're looking for a place to bite, but overall fleas live on floor surfaces. Had to deal with them myself.
@@pushista9322 Well then, I suppose you have more experience than me. I just remember stories about the plague being transmitted by cloth manufactured in London and spread to the countryside.
@@tonieundertwenty The life expectancy during that time is super skewed due to the frequency of infant-childhood death(1-3 years). If you make it past that, its not uncommon to live until 60
Looking at my family tree, I was able to trace some of my ancestors all the way up to the 16th century.. that being said, it helped dispel my view in everyone dying young.. Most ancestors even that early in the tree lived well into their 90’s but more recent modern ancestors seem to live about 60’s-70’s. Most misconceptions about old age in earlier eras are from the skewed statistics most likely of women and children dying in or shortly after childbirth. But in saying that, many of my ancestors had at least 10 children all the way down to my great grandmothers, and quite a few of them had twins. Imagine having twins pre modern medicine era. 😱
I can't tell if this is supposed to be an educational look into how historical fashion would have been thought of in it's own time, or if this is just straight shitposting. Either way, I love it.
ᎪNᎪᏚᎢᎪᏚᏆᎪ ЅᏇIFᏆIE you must be a ton of fun at parties. When exactly did I allude to the two being comparable in terms of body count? I was just saying these kinds of jokes feel a little too real now.
Your local Cheeto dust dealer I have heard there are folk who cannot catch the plague. One of my friends from my village actually had it-everyone in her family thought she was dead so they ran off. She woke up, delirious and so thirsty she drank a pitcher of reserved fat and legend has it that cured her.
So if we choose to wear vintage clothes then we're peasants? 'Cause Meme Mom says that the upper class look to new styles and peasants get hand-me-downs
@@elfenscheisse look, I was just joking. I agree it's not the same thing, but the societal fear is pretty comparable, even the superstitions about funny masks keeping you safe.
@@rml2765 I wonder if I can convince the lady who makes my life miser-- I mean, the lady who directs me during the work day-- to try this new Plague thing everyone's been talking about...
Pink Seashell Catherine Howard didn’t look as fabulous as Anne though, Anne’s dress was recorded as being a beautiful gray damask with crimson and ermine trim, Catherine’s is only mentioned historically as being black velvet. Tudor history and fashion is the BEST Karolina should make more videos about this era!
Twinkerton Well, from what I remember in that period people kind of did not want to be associated with nobility anymore so they gave up all the fancy things from the fear of being killed. But I think that some people actually hoarded lace and expensive stuff they managed to steal and that was really good some time later when the fight subsided. But in the end asa historical joke I would love to see her dressed as a revolutionary and parade fancy rococo stuff worn in a bad way and trying on makeup all random, it would be so lovely...😂😂😂😂
funnily, it was considered proper to be bit behind the fashions, the actresses and courtesans set the trends, others would follow when they noticed their peers following them (usually after few years). That´s why people thought Marie-Antoinette was so scandalous when she was a trendsetter and a follower of it because a queen was supposed to have conservative taste in fashion while still following it (after something new and trendy had become acceptable for proper ladies to wear).
Please please PLEASE do another in this vein!!! I love you skewering RU-vid tropes in historical context - this clothing haul one just stands out as the best you've done. Thank you, Meme Mom.
We're not going to point out that she stole it but when she start coughing at the end I was like yeah she might got the plague like did you wash those clothes before you wear them or did you unintentionally give yourself the plague LOL
I mean, stealing *is* a sin, so she kind of deserved it ngl... :/ I can kind of feel her though if she didn't feel like washing the clothes- I know for me it's a long walk to the river, and the water is near freezing this time of year, maybe she's in a similar situation idk.
Karolina, love your mix of historical facts and seriously lovely vintage reproductions with campy modern conversational presentation!! Totally worked, very funny, keep up the good work!!
@Mea Seria 🤣 I am laughing here eating breakfast. Not a great look and not healthy. I might dye choking on my food. your comment sold the whole thing for me. Oh God, need to breath now...
Damn it...I was trying to do a remedy with herbs because my misstress ordered so. But that jealous Molly said that I'm a witch and here I am, waiting to not to die on the trial
The Soothsayer-most-Stylish, who bares the name of Karolina, was of such wise foresight that she had indeed even surmised the Coming of the Great Peste of Nineteen-and-Twenty-Hundred!
The ironic part is that now that i have a good paying job (can actually put money aside *and* do fun things for the sake of it) i've been sewing and suddenly my wardrobe became...not vintage, but antique. My parents have called me out for looking like i stepped off the set of little house on the prarie or other historical shows. The first stays/corset i attempted made me look very scandinavian which garnered comments at the memorial day service i wore it to. Too bad we haven't been doing extended family holidays due to our current plague, otherwise i would be showing up looking pretty medieval, cloak and all.
Erzs F The lean and comely wench toys with our affections. Though we think ourselves masters, we are her slaves. She’s a Mean, Meme Mother Memes meaner than all others Ya’ wanna be her lover But she’ll treat you like a brother... Do you ever find yourself carried away in the RU-vid comments section. Gotta go now.
Aw, I love that you're using second hand items instead of buying your own! Sustainable queen! And I LOVE the vintage items, they just don't make them like they used to in the 1590's!!
So much sympathy for the loss of your mistress but I can see she has gifted you well and also made sure you were trained with skills that will make you valuable in your next position. And I do hope you and your family survive the plague.
