Its always been that way though. And the vegans really get made when you wear leather but its BETTER for the environment compared to plastic (production wise and end of life-wise). 2nd hand leather is always best if possible
I always appreciate your reminder that you need to consider fabrication and overall design when considering the practicality and versatility of a piece.
The purpose of those sleeveless sweaters is actually for wearing under blazers for work! wearing a full sweater under a blazer can be too bulky and too hot especially once you're inside with heating
Idk about the use of the word "purpose" here however yes, thats a WAY you CAN wear it. But a lot of people like sleeveless sweaters and do not like blazers at all. Myself included.
I won’t buy anything made with acrylic. It’s a very cheap fabric. It will not hold up and tends to pill a lot. Unfortunately, a lot of sweaters these days are made with acrylic.
@@ta3149 and it's usually mixing natural fabrics with synthetic ones that causes the worst pilling! like, pick a side!! but i understand why they do that, it's all down to the fact that when people will "filter-search" for a specific fabric, the brands will be allowed to put this monstrosity under "cotton" category :(
@@user-xm5kc4if9o I totally agree!! I bought a sweater from Mango last week 70% Viscose 30% Polyamid, because It looked too nice I thought I will make the compromise- Worst decicion ever!!! Those 30% polyamid messed up everything. In fact I felt very uncomfortable when I worn it. It costed me 50 Euros!! 30-50 Euros more and you have an everlasting sweater with 100 cotton
This is why I sew and knit my clothes. Love it! There is only so much anyone can knit/sew so it made me really consider what I want so spend my time with.
My Japanese office blasts AC in summer and heating in winter. My European heart hurts when I can't wear wool sweaters. Basically the office is warmer in winter than in summer. Make that make sense.
I've been avoiding footwear where the sole doesn't extend beyond the toe-tip for years now, and you're the first influence I've ever seen point out the issue with that type of sole! I once had a gorgeous pair of suede booties with really minimalist soles. They felt like slippers on my feet, but they wore out eventually because I wore _actual holes_ in the toe tips from how much they scuffed against things!
Completely agree with the sleeves or short sleeve sweaters. I will even add 3/4 sleeves. I don’t want to wear them when it’s cold and I don’t want to wear them when it is warm. Also tops with any beading or bedazzling. Just a hard no for me.
Aww, I love my Everlane sweaters with bell sleeves because they are so soft and flattering on me. Granted, it never really gets cold enough where I live to require layering a jacket on top 😅
I was looking at a sleeveless wool/cashmere turtleneck on Depop that I thought could work over some long sleeve shirts, but you helped me really consider the versatility of the piece. Especially since it's just something I saw and thought looked nice, not something I need. Thank you for your time and effort to make such helpful and inspiring videos! Also I am loving your hair these days!!
I'm someone who gets hot and loves wearing cardigans. I love these kind of sleeveless turtlenecks because I can mix and match with all of my cardigans without getting overly warm but still feeling stylish.
This is so important! I do wind up donating items that were almost. I am not doing that anymore and I see a difference in the way I feel when I get dressed. Thanks for a thoughtful video.
I've watched thousands of these types of videos, and I love yours!! Flows very well, loved all your tips, some I've never heard before! Thank you for your knowledge and cozy video :)
Totally agree with you on gold plated jewelry. It won't last. I only wear solid gold or silver pieces. They last a life time. Some of my gold necklaces have been with me for almost 30 years now.
That Doen dress is gorgeous on you! And I know these concepts but it’s still hard to put them into practice 😅 especially if I love everything about a piece EXCEPT one detail, it’s sooo hard to make myself let it go
Many times I disagree with your take, tho I appreciate a different perspective on a fashion topic, but this video is a 100% hit for me. It is my true favourite ❤
I just love the idea of what not to wear! Was searching for so long for sth like that. Totally agree with garmets which are not useful and all the tips ❤
Love your channel!! I think trench coats are a great transition piece in the San Francisco Bay Area. We have milder winters and fall has little rain. I have a cropped trench and I just ordered the wool / drape-y trench from Goelia. This drape looks good on many body types and is less boxy- and has a belt which I think gives more options. I also like the Lillysilk trench. I think either of those would be better suited to your body type than the Sezanne - I’m surprised You haven’t tried either of those warmer, higher quality nice drape/belted trenches. They are warmer and more elegant than the Sezanne version. ❤
Would it be possible to do a video about trench coats? You've owned a few over the years, and I'm looking to buy one for the fall! I feel like you'd have incredible insight on how to pick a great one out. (the shoulders tip you gave here is helpful!)
Such a subtle and classic style 😍 I agree with fake or thinly plated jewelry. They wear out and the scratches on the surface do not look good. I go for pure gold or silver , always. Also agree with the shoe thing.
I really like a boatneck, it suits my narrow shoulders, however I will buy a quality fitted piece, like you say, bulky with a big sleeve doesn't work on me either. I have found that they keep their shape just fine. I am noticing more feminine details on tops now, I do like them and I can recognise a delicate piece over a trendy piece. If it reminds of the 80s or 90s then I pass haha. Thanks so much for the boots/sole tip, I learned a lot there.
I LOVE extreme details (not fringes, but yes embellishments) however I find it annoying that most times these embellished items are on jumpers that are made from acrylic and polyester. I also love sleeveless jumpers...however they are all impractical like you said. Whilst, I LOVE them....I don't wear it year-year so eventually its actually not a long-lasting and versatile piece for me. So in the end, I agree with you completely.
Have exactly the same khaki coat which I love lol. Mine is plenty big enough for a cable sweater underneath or a blazer, definitely necessary here in winter. It's a shame because it looks great on you
Hi, I'm considering the Clyde in Khaki. What size did you get? Was it true to size? I am thinking to wait until I can try it on, if I get to a store in future. I'm a UK 10 on top now after being a UK 8, so I'm a little bit in between but still think the XS would be better for me as I don't wear chunky knits. It's all about the cut of things.
You always hit the nail on the head ☺️ considered purchases, knowing what suits you, consider your lifestyle. I think you mentioned a raincoat at the beginning. I can recommend a french brand called Aigle. I use it all year round (it's not a trench) In the UK we need this. Plenty of room for layering size up. Great if you are petite. Has a removable button up hood for rain and wind, big pockets. It's the one I use year round, mine is in a neutral colour. Useful for travel. Not an advert 😊. Thanks Helen loved your vlog😘
I’m sorry to say I find heattech base layers hold armpit oils and smell after a day where an organic cotton top or merino one can go a long time without smelling.
Ty for helping me consider some other aspects of the Clyde and that sweater tshirt from & other stories. I watched a few influencers talk about these and noone helped me make up my mind like you did. Looking forward to hearing your fav alternative coats in the future
I have a Naadam cashmere hoodie with bell sleeves that I ADORE but it's a pain to have to roll up the sleeves carefully for when I wash my hands or the dishes. Since there isn't a defined hem I can't just scrunch the sleeves up my arm. I finally took it to a tailor to shorten the sleeves and it's much easier to wear now. Also I can't believe Jcrew would charge that much for a sweater with no pretty detailing!
Hi Helen, I love your content and approachable practical take on styling outfits. I've had my eye on the tiny pearl necklace from mejuri. But is there much difference between the micro pearl and tiny pearl necklace, and do you recommend one over the other? Thanks so much ❤️
Hi! I just found your channel a few days ago, and your style is what I’ve been looking for! Would you mind sharing the measurements of the old tibi coat, like the chest width, coat length. So I can find something similar! Thank you very much!
What % of acrylic would you "accept" in a non-technical piece of clothing (e.g. if its under 2%)? And what % of other synthetic fibers would you accept in clothing?
I personally wouldn’t accept any in knitwear. It’s truly not necessary in most cases. (although I’ve heard mohair sometimes requires it to keep the hairs together?) I personally only allow small amounts of elastane. Less than 10% in cotton tee shirts, 2% in jeans. That’s just my rule, something else might work for you! If you’re looking for cost effective composition, a lot of places will have 95% cotton/5% cashmere sweaters that aren’t craaazy expensive.
Finally smb mentioning vests! My arms extend from my body so... They are naturally colder, no? Can I have arm warmers instead of this useless contraption? Who even came up with an idea of a vest, it feels so silly to me😅
I see so many influencers who flaunt their Cartier and Tiffany jewelry but once they get a sponsorship from a lower end brand they’re all like yes they’re better and we should buy these plated jewelry too. However I do like Mejuri and have severe pieces from them that are solid gold only.
Always right on, Helen. I also came to the same conclusions about the Clyde trench, I have an hourglass frame, and it just didn't work for me, and apart from the dark green color is very "fall," Sezane trenches have a major flaw for me because they don't come with a removable hood. For me, the function of a trench is to protect you enough for the transitional periods that usually come along with seasonal rain. Living in the Netherlands, where it's rainy most of the time, it's not functional or versatile enough to justify the purchase.
Wait did i miss the sporty and rich sweatshirt part? I was looking forward to seeing you talk about that bc i was thinking of buying something from that brand 😭
Hi Helen, will you suggest good pieces to invest in for the transition weather, was checking out clyde trench but would love some suggestions. Agreed too, its such a short period of time to enjoy and you want to make the most out of it
I bought the trench and I sized up. Fits nice open over my knits. I live in Ireland and I have about 9 months a year where I need something like that. I even wear it with skirts and shorts and ballet flats in the summer. So it might not be good for warm countries but I love it.
i love that Sezane beige sweater and especially the raglan sleeves as I can't do dropped shoulder very well. On the website it says its cropped but do you think with a mid waist jean or pant it would show your tummy, especially in a bigger size like L?
"vegan leather" should be used only with plant-based alternatives, because this way even a plastic bag is made from vegan leather. but I get it, it's marketing.
As a vegan I don’t buy wool, leather, silk, suede or fur. But I don’t buy acrylic or polyester either. I buy faux leather shoes - it’s great being able to wash them under the tap! But most of my clothes are fine vintage cotton. Lawn cotton and lisle were very much like silk. I try to buy everything secondhand for ethical reasons, but I get organic cotton undies at Pact. I’m saying all these because it would be nice if you remembered that some of us don’t want those ‘natural’ fibres that cause suffering and death.
