I have a very small wardrobe. Probably 15 tops and 5 bottoms I wear 90% of the time. Not including coats etc. I am very poor and have gone whole years without buying clothes, and when I do it's usually a 50-75 dollar splurge at the thrift store once a year, to replace stuff that's truly worn out or doesn't fit anymore. I'm comparing myself to you and imagining how it must feel to have maybe $10-$20/wk to spend on something new from the thrift store every week! It must be so fun to have a great big rack of choices to express yourself with. My clothes are very basic because I can't afford to buy stuff that's too niche. It all has to work for me in all circumstances. But it's so boring. I really wish I could get more color and whimsy into my wardrobe. Heck, I wish it was reasonable for me to wear fun silly clothes in daily life. I kind of think that as a poor person it would be unseemly for me to be too fashionable. People would accuse me of wasting money or faking being poor for sympathy or something. But maybe I could buy one or two pieces that could be colorful and have some pattern and fun to them, if they were wearable at least a dozen times a year or so. Maybe I could get a really wild colorful whimsical cardigan that I could perhaps crochet myself. And for summer maybe I could get a wide brimmed hat with flowers on it that could look a bit silly but still be practical for keeping the sun off.
@RefractedStarlight
@RefractedStarlight 3 дня назад
One of my good friends does this. I’ve known her for a decade and she’s been very poor but always has a few go to colorful and whimsical pieces that express her personality, like a bag, a hair accessory, a skirt, etc.
@Marialla.
@Marialla. 3 дня назад
@@RefractedStarlight I forgot about accessories like that! It's a very good idea. I carry a basic black backpack and have very short hair though. I don't like jewelry much but I'm okay with necklaces. Maybe I can make some beaded necklaces and get inspiration from somewhere how to make them unique. Somehow give it a big medallion to be eye catching and cool. I can also use polymer clay. I could make pins or keychain trinkets to hang on my backpack.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. It really is such a privilege to be able to have fun picking out new clothing at the thrift store every month and choose from so many options in my closet every day. Being forced by circumstances to prioritize pieces that don't feel so fun and exciting to you seems disheartening, and it sucks that there are people out there who think there's a "right way" to be poor. I really hope you're able to find clothes that fit your lifestyle and budget but also bring you joy to wear. You deserve to feel good in your clothes!! and I really hope you find or make a colorful cardigan and a floral brimmed hat :'))
@neocat81
@neocat81 16 часов назад
i sympathize. thrifting is a life saver. altering existing clothing is a fun way to make it your own. it's also a great way to get started sewing. you could start with safety pinning bits together to see how you like it and it wont be permanent. my sis only has 10 outfits. she chooses to limit her self that way but they are all fashionable. if she likes something it has to replace something. more isn't always better and you don't have to explain to any one your finances. best of luck!!!!

Hoodies and sweaters should go in the outerwear category imo, especially since blazers are considered outerwear - I feel like that messes with everyone’s “tops” category. Also, with the amount of layering people do on top, I think it’s totally fair that it should be the biggest category. It’s weird to me that a camisole and a sweater would both count towards the ultra broad “tops” group

I'm a maximalist and have a large wardrobe soooo I started using Index 30th of May, so my usage is for 3 months I have 41% so not too bad! I have 600 items (yikes) tops (205) 34%/Bottom (156) 26%/shoes (55) 9%, Jewelry (51) 8% one piece (44) 7% outerwear (36) 6%, accessory (36) 6% bags (15) 2% swim( 4) 1%. I live in Canada so we do have 4 seasons. I have 21% of my wardrobe that is secondhand but a lot of my clothing are from local designers. I have at least 3 local designers that I follow their season launch (2 per year) I do often buy a couple of pieces of clothing from them each year (mostly their winter collection). That explain why I have so much also that make it hard to declutter because for 1) I still wear them, they are good quality pieces, that doesn't follow any trend (not necessary ''classic'' but still ''intemporel'' and 2) its almost like I have a collection that follow my growth but also the growth of my favorite designers (they are all women of my age) . I have several pieces that dates back from 2010s and older. I feel bad because my husband just a have super small space in our closet but at the same time I LOVE my wardrobe and love getting dress! LOL
@beepwrld
@beepwrld 2 дня назад
using 40% in 3 months when you have 600 items is honestly amazing, I feel like that shows that you truly love your things and get use out of them, so the higher number seems worthwhile for you! following/supporting/collecting local designers is also so cool, I would love to do something like that someday if I ever have the budget for it
@valeriemalenfant

@@beepwrld thanks and sometimes I wear two outfits and only log one so I'm guessing I could be higher. As for local designers look if your local college has a design/fashion program and go see there end of year runway its the best way to know what's happening in your area or local boutique that is selling local designer. here in Montreal little boutique will do ''collective sale'' so they are inviting 3 to 4 local designers to sell for a weekend their collection its usually fall - winter and spring. As for price they are usually the same if not more affordable then like say Sézane. and in my book those designers are doing way more sustainable fashion even if they don't have the ''qualification'' because they are designed in my country and made by qualify local labor.

omg I started tracking my wardrobe 2 months ago, and I'm also so excited for long term stats! I use Whering as an app, but I'll need to see if Indyx is better (for now I have about 1.5 months of data, 2 weeks I was at my mum's house where I have different clothes which I decided not to include in the data bc it's 1000 km away so...) anyways, since you are curious of other people's stats, I can show some of my wardrobe composition (climate: Scandinavia, big city, but I don't feel cold properly; style: cottagegoth (alternative mixed with minimalist mixed with cottagecore mixed with artsy), most of my recently bought items are secondhand, but I have a lot of items I had for 5+ years (10+ even) that was purchased new so I input new) 375 items, of which 73% was purchased new, 22% preloved, 5% handmade 3 biggest categories are: 37 earrings, 32 T-shirts, 29 high socks so yeah, I have input my collection of funky socks which does bring up the % of new items considerably. most of my jewelry was also purchased new and I do have a lot of that as a goth-adjacent girlie about 1/3 of the items are black, then about 1/6 of them are silver, rest is mostly red/maroon, white/ecru, grey and pink in 2 (1.5) months I have worn 54% of my wardrobe, where seasonality does play a big role, my long pants, coats, winter accessories ofc have seen no wear but I think this is a fair statistic and I def have the goal of wearing everything in a year brands I wear the most: H&M (mostly basics from 5+ years ago and somehow I thrift a lot of H&M), Urban Outfitters (used to work there, had employee discount), Mango, Dr. Martens - but!! the app doesn't recognize all brands, I think I have more clothes from Reserved overall, really fun experience and I would recommend it to any fashion person!

Whering is such a good and underrated app! Most of the features included in other apps are in it, and it’s free and well designed. I’m a bit annoyed at indyx’s adding pieces function cause you’re forced to do it one by one lol, but the hire stylist function is truly one of a kind. I just finished digitalizing my wardrobe in both apps but I’ll be logging my outfits in indyx! Excited to see how it’s going to be in six month or a year:D

I've been wanting to track my wardrobe for a while now, but....i was in a big "overconsumption to drown the voices" the past few years. this past year I've been so much better with this. even tho 99% is second hand, it's still overconsumption and I don't need (nor wear) everything that I own. and seeing these beautiful statistics makes me excited to actually start on the tracking and having more of a sense of what's being worn

The dedication for gathering the data is insaneeeee!❤ As for the whole "how many pieces would you have in a different climate", in Finland I'd say I had a similar amount of clothes as I do now in the US, but a lot more of it would account to outerwear and layers rather than things like skirts and dresses (which, realistically you couldn't wear for most of the year in colder parts of the country). I think the more fluctuation in climate (very hot summers & very cold winters), the more likely you're going to have a bigger closet to accommodate all four seasons. I definitely own way less clothes now than I did back in Finland because the difference in seasons isn't as drastic where I live now. Also, I think it's really difficult as fashion content creators to not feel like we "have to" buy a lot of clothes to have more "variety" in our videos - I simply can't afford that habit though, so I've just admitted defeat and just outfit repeat a loooott (which tbh isn't a bad thing)😅But I think you've done a great job managing variety + staying true to your style + staying sustainable! 😊 And congrats on 100K! Such a huge milestone♥

Yes please, absolutely to more wardrobe analytics. I am in the UK so climate is usually between 5-15C (that's 41- 59F for the Americans). I have 103 items which is shoes (10), jackets (6), bottoms- skirts, jeans and trousers (24), tops (28), 'layers'- jumpers and cardigans (18), and dresses (17). I'm not much of an accessories or jewelry person (a couple of scarves, and rings) so that's about it. This includes any comfy, at-home-only stuff like PJs and the like. Half is bought new within the last 5 years, a quarter is older than 5 years, and the other quarter is second-hand (thrifted).
@tess3709
@tess3709 3 дня назад
some of these stats would be more representative if given a median rather than an average value-like the repeat wear stat, as you explained, is not very representative because of the few pieces that get very heavy wear, like certain shoes or pieces of jewelry. i wish we could know the median number of uses each item gets, because it would better represent, across your wardrobe, where you’re more or less likely to repeat pieces across the board. interesting video all around though!

Thank you so much for talking about this app! I started using it and even got my mom using it so we can share outfits and pieces with each other for opinions haha. There's some pieces I hesitate to get rid of but it has helped me really see they don't work with anything else in my wardrobe and it's OK for me to resell them. It's also helped me feel less guilt about the amount I've invested in really high-quality basis that I wear constantly and have held up well. Something I want to start using it for is to group my clothes into collections based on my current body type. I'm in my mid-thirties and have a history of broad body changes and have downsized so many times only to have to repurchase a bunch of things! So now I can just group them in the app and label them for storage and not have to re-try everything on every season because I can't remember what fits (because of course tags don't really help here haha!)

I have been trying to enter all my clothes into Indyx, as a dopamine shopper (I’ve been working very hard to curb this) and someone who doesn’t like to get rid of clothes, it has been a very humbling and overwhelming experience. I’m not even done and I have ~700 items. It is making me assess what I actually have and what I “need”. I’m trying to be kind to myself throughout this process, because I know that at the end of this I will be able to curate a more wearable wardrobe overall.

I track my clothing in a different app so categories are a bit different, but I can share some statistics! This was tracked during two years Total of 128 items, 35% of which is secondhand (I try to give my ''new'' clothes that I have purchased in the past a long long life so they dwell in my closet) I have not included any jewellery or outerwear jackets, because I don't really rotate between many different ones. Also no socks included My biggest category is tops: 59 items, including 28 t-shirts (I have so many t-shirts) and 15 long sleeve/turtle neck tops Biggest category after that is footwear with 11 items After that we have 10 pairs of pants (this app distinguishes pants and jeans, I have 3 pairs of jeans) Biggest colors are blue, grey, black, beige, and brown I have worn 100% of my closet but that is over all time. I cannot see a statistic for the last month. Top 5 brands are Monki, Primark, Mango, Weekday, and Stradivarius which all stem from my pre-thrifting era.

Hi! I really like the question you asked about people from other climates because I'm actually thinking of hiring you in Indyx to help me with my wardrobe and outfits. I am from a tropical country and my city is know as the city of the "eternal spring"; that is because through the whole year it's always 73 F, I mean every single day, it doesn't matter if it is August or January. We also have a very thriving fashion industry and I honestly think my style here is really good and it goes perfectly with the weather. I own lots of dresses and always buy national brands that use great fabrics. However, precisely because the weather is always the same, my wardrobe is around 55 items. In 3 months though, I'm moving to London and I literally have NO IDEA what to wear there. I've visited very cold countries before and I feel so out of place because I only think about wearing jumpers and jeans and jackets and I just don't feel cute or stylish as I do in my own city. I am in need of help. But to answer your question, yeah, in tropical or warmer places we often have much smaller wardrobes and it's more than enough.

It's all about layering! Maybe you can throw on a long sleeve under your dresses! And/or tights! Also finding fun pieces will help. Sometimes you throw on whatever's warm enough and won't drag the ground cause it's rainy and cold and you just need to run to the grocery store, but if you get a coat in your fave color, or rainboots that also feel fun to you, you'll feel better about it than a boring black/navy/tan "cause it goes with everything" puffer and boots. Play with textures and patterns and fits of clothes. There are a million shapes a sweater can be, y'know? Maybe research some local London designers for inspo, and get plugged into the fashion scene once you're there!

I've even added in every perfume/scent and hair ribbons, clips, and scrunchies I have into Indyx. That really brings my numbers up, but I find it so fun to plan and track those! Definitely a bit boring to see "most worn" as shoes all the time, but I guess it just goes to show that shoes can be a very defining factor of our style! Great video; it's really fun to see the comparison to my wardrobe. For reference, I have around 10 pieces and some accessories like sunglasses I still need to add but my stats are: Items: 290 Tops: 86 (30%) Accessories: 58 (20%) (this is my ribbons and scrunchies and headbands and hair clips and scarves) Bottoms: 48 (16%) (Lots of skirts as well as casual and dress pants) One Pieces: 30 (10%) (I love and wear dresses a lot so I understand you, Liz! Also a few jumpsuits) Other: 19 (7%) (This is where I put my perfumes, also a shawl that I don't really consider outerwear or an accessory) Outerwear: 17 (6%) (I live in a climate with quite a cold winter and also wear blazers to work and for style a bit. TBH looking to add some more jackets like a brown leather one but definitely keeping it under 20!) Bag: 12 (4%) (I've only recently started using bags as real contributors to an outfit so I might add 2-3 in some colors; this number includes several tote bags I use for grocery shopping/practical uses as well as purses) Shoes: 12 (4%) Jewelry: 9 (3%) (I still need to add in some, but these are the ones I wear the vast majority of the time) Swim: I didn't input this and am honestly a bit baffled by its inclusion. I'd much rather have an activewear/athletic category or lounge/pajama category. But I have 2 bathing suits and some cover-ups lol Not in Indyx: sleepwear, activewear that cannot be worn for everyday clothing as well (this would probably add 20-30 items)

Some of our stats match pretty well (60% used after six months). 157 items total, 103 of those are clothes, 54 are everything else. 38% tops was also my largest category by far, followed by bottoms at 15%. One thing that influenced my stats in an interesting way is that I was traveling for a total of 3 months out of those six, so I was working with capsule wardrobes made of carry-on-size luggage-friendly items for half the time. That means I wore my favourite sneakers 56 times and the same tote bag 48 times. Considering I think it's pretty good that my most repeated outfit was worn 4 times.

I'd be curious to see you talk/demonstrate more what you do to encourage yourself to wear different items and not be too repetitive with your outfits. I'm sure the job encourages that, but also it gets easy for me to just have the things at the front of the drawer be what I've worn pretty recently and the back of the drawer items take more motivate to pull out and style.
@beepwrld
@beepwrld 2 дня назад
I've honestly been working on getting better at this! In the most literal sense, I do actually try to put my recently worn/laundered clothes to the back of the dresser drawers instead of the front haha. Indyx also has a feature to sort your clothes by "least worn", so I'll often do that and try to style an outfit around a piece from there!
@helenm1085
@helenm1085 7 часов назад
I "file fold" my tops and store them left to right in my drawer. Freshly washed stuff goes in the left, and everything gets pushed down. I know that stuff on the left is easy to throw on without thinking, and stuff on the right hasn't been worn in a while and would make a novel outfit! If things languish on the right too long then I know that I'm just not wearing them

Me wearing one of five identical pairs of pants and a mix of my favorite comfy tops like 90% of the time cause I'm a "home clothes" person, and then grabbing whatever's close and feels right in the moment when I do leave the house 😂😂😂. I love personal style but often prioritize being dressed at all to putting together a killer outfit, because I'd rather get coffee/see my friends/do the errand, etc, than not because I'm trying to find the perfect thing to wear.

Congrats on the 100K! I followed for the thrift flips and DIYs and those are still my faves. Personally, I completely avoid fast fashion stores for ethical reasons, but will still go to a thrift store to get the feeling of shopping. It works, even if I don't buy anything. I get a lot of my clothes from friends and family and love a mystery bag

A video on stats related to how long items stay in the wardrobe, items with most longevity, etc. I think about this for myself because I tend to cycle through clothing. Even if it is 2nd hand, I feel like it's some sign of integrity or knowing myself somehow if I keep and wear the same things for many years, but maybe that is fallacious thinking or some ideal from society. Regardless it would be fun and interesting to examine and discuss that.

Love this! Just started using Indyx this month, inspired by you and Laini. Still uploading my gigantic wardrobe (which feels like the same 12 items in 15 colors each). I've been thrilled with the free trial of the insider analytics, although I do feel like there need to be a few more options. I'd love to be able to mark items gifted, or to flag them to be left out of the stats list, etc. So far, I also haven't marked my items by season, because, barring sweaters, I feel like most of my items get worn year-round, but I live in the South, so we only really have two seasons: very long summer and rather short winter. Anyway, would love to see all the data you want to share!

I have been doing this too (but started with the Whering app a little over a year ago before your Indyx videos). My wardrobe is mostly dresses! I actually have more than 27. BUT my second-hand and new are more 50/50 because I am in a small band and like to support other local bands at our gigs and buy merch like tshirts, hoodies, sweatpants etc. My work from home wardrobe is all comfy band clothes, but every time I leave the apartment it's in a dress. I wish the apps had 'local' section so you could say the items were new, but from a small business or local artist like a band or a market stall seller. Whering also shows what colours you wear most and what items you pair together most which is pretty cool--but being in a metal band being in British weather, it's not a huge surprise that I wear black the most and that my Doc Martens and leather jacket are paired all the time. I loved seeing your much more colourful calendar!

My favorite data points were the monthly cost of goods and the cost per wear. In my opinion, those statistics will be fun to observe over the next six months as well. I often justify spending a larger amount of money on an item (new or thrifted) based on my estimated CPW. Reflecting on my personal recent spending at the thrift store, a majority of my budget has actually been used for birthday gifts and early holiday shopping. I'd be interested to see a video of what you thrift (or make) for your loved ones as gifts - and to know if you also start early as I do!

Suggestion for 100k video - purchase a small box of thrifted items for the winner to match their style or help them style difficult items! I have a bit more than you in my indyx but I haven't been tracking through the app for very long (< a month). I started tracking straight clothing usage about 2 years ago via spreadsheet and it has definitely made me more conscious about the items I never want to wear or style, so that's been helpful I'm sooooo into indyx with one gripe, which is that items with no purchase date defaulted to this year, so it thinks I bought 54% of my wardrobe this year, which would be so stressful actually lol

Great video, interesting to see the category breakdowns. And 61% secondhand is pretty impressive. I've got a wardrobe spreadsheet so I have a few stats! I currently have ~360 items excluding jewellery, of which 41% is secondhand and 37% are tops. Quite a lot, mostly because my mum has passed her clothes on to me for years. My most worn item is just my work backpack, which makes sense.

So interesting to hear about your long term statistics! I've been using a wardrobe app (first Acloset and now Whering) for almost a year and it's been so helpful. I have 319 items listed in the app. That number does include everything like jewelry, hair accessories, gym clothes etc. and also clothing I'm currently trying to sell and some items I've added to "try on" before actually buying them. So I guess my actual wardrobe is probably somewhere between 270 and 290 items. My top categories are dresses (20, 10 mini + 10 midi length) and long sleeved t-shirts (17, which is way too many...). I've worn 75% of my clothes and 83% of my wardrobe is second hand items. Overall I'm quite happy with my statistics but I'm also super motivated to get my usage up to 100% and cost per wear down to 0,50€ or less for most items.

wow... love the info. to me that is so so much! i am a weird shape so i have been making my own cloths. i have around 10 dresses that i have worn all summer. 2 pairs of shoes. no such thing as a skirt that is too big. i have about a dozen pares of undies and 10 bras. i wonder what is a reasonable amount of under things? another aspect could be when you do laundry. wash when they get dirty. not when you think you need to. i would ware a top and pants for 2 or 3 days. undies change every day but bras, i can wait a week. i don't sweat much.

Very interesting. I was interested that your swim category is zero. I counted up what I have for this category (including suits, cover-ups, and swim shirts). I have two tankinis, one one-piece suit, one bikini top, two other swim bottoms (skirt and shorts), three swim shirts, and three cover ups. I did not wear the swim skirt or the long-sleeved swim shirt this past season but wore everything else at least once. I also have an additional tankini that I wore a couple of times but have already decided it's time for it to go. I live in southern Nevada and go swimming about twice a week in the summer (mid May through mid September). The three cover ups were thrifted, but the rest I bought new. I found your video fascinating. I have not catalogued my clothes on Indyxx yet (seems overwhelming), but I can see it would be very valuable. I try to weed out clothes at the beginning of each season, but having the actual statistics of what's been worn and what hasn't would be useful. I love your channel and look forward to your weekly videos all week. Please do one in which you style the pieces you don't wear much or at all.

I feel like cost per wear makes sense to be low for new stuff because a large part are gifts? although I've been loving clothing swaps and Buy Nothing groups as sources of free secondhand clothes. And the opportunity to get rid of the ones that don't end up working for me without feeling too bad about it.

would really love even a more detailed video! :) also definitely do a challenge and let us know how long it took to use all of them! I have been tracking my clothes maybe a year now with wherin and it's really interesting! I live in Scandinavia, so I really need seasonal clothes. I actually haven't tracked my jackets and shoes but everything else counted I have 90 items total. I have been decluttering for the past months quite a lot of clothes I don't wear, right now I have 83% wardrobe usage and the value is 1270 euros (probably because of couple Patagonia fleeces haha). I have almost all values for my clothes since I have been budgeting 7-8 years and I searched the prices from my excel :D that was a lot of work... I'm actually interested to try maybe this app as well, it seems a bit more detailed in some parts. is there possible to store information about the clothes? I find it nice that I can (for example) mark the cleaning directions straight to wherin. Oh, and I have 53% new items and 47% used which is surprising since I haven't bought pretty much anything new for many years! I do have some really old items in use still, though. I have 51 tops (CRAZY!!!), 6 bottoms (WHAT...), 11 activewear and 9 dresses (why isn't the sum matching though hahah??). I did NOT realise I have so many tops and so few bottoms... but it is pretty hard for me to find skirts for example, I mostly use dresses with a jumper if I need a dress and a top -combo. but this is all really interesting, please continue doing videos of this! :)
