This is why I can't stand Clerith, people think I argue against them because I am some rabid Cloti fan, I'm not, I'm a rabid "don't character assassinate the characters" fan. And the reason Cleriths always completely misrepresent Clouds character is because they have to, their interpretation of the story can't exist if Cloud isn't a horrible, horrible human being.
Character slander and assassination is always a no-go for me. I have characters I dislike and say dumb stuff, but thats always in a joking matter and never serious. I also only dislike things we are given about them and not made up things. At the end of the day, I dont care who you ship, just dont say weird things about characters that are just not true! You can say that. I can say it's optional. Devs said they're all representations of Cloud in the moment, they could've happened. All of the ship stuff is optional content, none is canon.

I can't speak for the devs, the only thing I can assure you it's that's the kiss is optional and has no other impact on the game later on. Many people are talking about cleriths "killing the character" but clotis are just as bad at it.
Even though I am a big fan of Clerith, to me it seems like the remake is aiming towards keeping Zack with Aerith and Cloud with Tifa. And that is completely fine. I love FFVII, but sometimes the fandom can get a little out of hand with the ship wars and mischaracterize the characters to fit the narratives in their heads.
The thing is, no one should be told they cant ship something, even if it doesnt end up canon. Like I still have ships that didnt become canon and dont get upset about it bec i celebrate what they had and I enjoy just celebrating their moments from time to time. At the end of the day, I love the story of FFVII first before shipping and no matter what happens in part 3, I will enjoy the heck out of it.

I can’t believe people are arguing about this. Knowing how deep Cloud’s love for Tifa is, and how loyal he is (this is how SE describes him), how does him loving someone else make any sense? I 100% agree with you. It is crazy this whole changing the narrative to fit a certain head cannon. Shipping is suppose to be fun. Like you can like who you like but you don't destory the story that is being told and morph situations and character traits/personalities to say these things didn't happen or don't matter just so you can make your ship the end game or superior than the rivial ship.

I'm a Clerith fan and I've never stumbled upon this notion. I'm glad you are addressing this though. I have come to the understanding that every date Cloud has in the Gold Saucer is true to how he'd react and he would be his true self. The only point I do want to make apparent is whenever you go a date, your stance with that person will either ... A.Fall Off, you might begin to realize they're not ideal match for you ...or ... B. You both have chemistry and you are trying to climb up the relationship-ladder. I think B is occurring with both Tifa and Cloud -AND Aerith and Cloud, Tifa and Cloud are past the middle of the ladder while Cloud and Aerith are at the beginning stages. There's nothing 'wrong' with that. Some couples take time to bloom. Hope that makes sense.
That is a very reasonable understanding! I dont mind Clerith at all, but this weird characterization I've seen about Cloud's character baffled me so much like why would Cloud do this at all? But yes, I always believed in shipping whoever you want and enjoying your ship. It's the weird things like saying Cloud is using Tifa or something or Aerith doing Tifa wrong is an issue to me bec they all respect one another and care for another. Regardless of who becomes canon or not, the key to any relationship between characters at the core is the bond of friendship that they created through these first two parts. Your stances are perfectly reasonable to how the player can perceive them and its a fair stance.
Great video! I think at some point someone really needs to address this esp since that mischaractization and narrative is being pushed as canon or something close to it. As in It's highly possible that Cloud WILL do this. People who believe that needs to start rethinking what kind of game this even is.

This is a great video. I would consider myself a Clerith. But at the same time, I know that Aerith will simply be my preference for Cloud. Whether it is canon or if it is what ultimately goes down in the story is a different matter. I still adore Tifa and Cloud's relationship. And I will never downplay what they have which is truly special. I just hope Clotis will show the same respect and not also take a dump on what Aerith and Cloud shared. There was truly something there and she was truly someone very near and dear to Cloud that a big effect on him. To say that Cloud never had any special feelings for Aerith would be just as ridiculous as saying he had no special feelings for Tifa. I think there is room for both. And as you said, we should be focusing on what Cloud shared with each character not bashing or downplaying others just to elevate your own. Thank you for saying this thought outloud.
I adore Clouds and Aerith's relationship bec their characters are important to one another. That I will never dispute bec at the core, whether its a ship or not, the main thing to understand about both ships is that its about friendship and from there it can bloom to more to whatever the devs decide. I hate bashing and slandering characters and twisting them in some way to try and justify something that honestly makes the characters look bad. Instead, we should celebrate what makes them great in the type of friendship and bond they share. Sure, at some point it will be decided by the devs what they want to do, but at the same time, it shouldnt diminish the relationship the characters have anyway. The people who say this really get on my nerves. Why would they think Square would put the first and only kiss in FF7 history in the game for such a disgusting reason 🤦♂️. And if that were the case (god forbid), why the HELL would they want him near Tifa or Aerith??? If you have to mischaracterize arguably the most iconic FF protagonist ever for your ship to work, your ship is dead.

I don't get why people need to have Cloud jealous in order for their ship to work, especially the Gongaga scene and the GS date. I had someone who gave me interview references and qoutes from them as well as scenes to prove their ship. They didn't expect me to look into them to find out about them ommiting and reorganizing interviewing qoutes to fit their ship.
thats something i dont like shippers doing in general, no matter who someone ships. If you need to do that, then that hurts your ship more than helps it. twisting evidence is really something that makes a ship weaker, not better.

This is such a great video! People actually understanding Clouds character has become SO RARE! I've seen so many shippers not even just the Clerith people, anyone who shipped Cloud with someone other than Tifa, they've all been acting incredibly foolish about this little kiss and trying to make it out into anything other than what it is and they've decided to throw Cloud under the bus to salvage it. Hell, I find it actually really CREEPY that they're comfortable with this characterization of him that they've created and think "This is the guy for Aerith!" Like really? The guy that gets so petty and shallow that he uses Tifa to boost his ego and get back at Aerith for a love she had five years ago with a dead guy? Uhhh, that isn't Cloud Strife. It just isnt him at ALL.

I think people need to realize that there are things in OG which would not fly today in terms of tastefulness and don't play well with modern marketing. Gaming is big and SE want these games to sell accordingly (whether they succeeded is another thing). If they can remove Cloud engaging Aerith in a one-sided UFC match for the black materia, then I can definitely see them not wanting Cloud to come across as a jealous, manipulative pos. He's awkward and puts his foot in his mouth in Gongaga, but he realizes his mistake when he sees how the girls react. He also then remembers Zack and feels terrible and guilty about forgetting him. It is my belief that Cloud would not dare to pursue Aerith romantically after remembering Zack and his feelings, not that he showed much interest before that anyway. They promised to leave things less open to interpretation with the trilogy, and, in my imo, they are following thru very nicely. Here's to Zack and Aerith reuniting in game 3 and ending up where they both belong... with each other.
Cloud can be kind of a dick, but not to the extent of going after peoples feelings like some of the takes suggested. Like what he said to Wedge in the beg about not being interested. Wedge was excited tog et to know Cloud and he was not interested in a tone that made him come off dickish, but thats just Cloud's antisocial part of his personality and not wanting to get involved with people he doesnt care for until he gets to know wedge better. Your right that there are some things they can't really do now bec of outcry, but if hes being controlled by the bad guy, no one will see it as it being him bec they can see hes being manipulated by Sephiroth. Oh man, I was floored with how Cloud acted in Gongaga during that scene. Like Cloud, holy hell, I know what you were trying to say, but you were doing it very badly. The key to understand tho is that Cloud meant well, he just doesnt know how to deal with that kind of stuff, so he just decided to be blunt, but yeah, you can see he regrets it later in the scene at the end. Zack will be reunited with Aerith in some way bec theres no way you bring him back and never give him and Aerith that reunion we never seen except for what we see in AC. Its def gonna happen so I'm interested to see how they do it. Like Im not big on Zerith, simply because I only ship one thing in FFVII, but narratively and Zack being in this project, it can only lead to a reunion of some kidn between the two.
I'm actually shocked that you mentioned the kiss on the SkyWheel, but failed to mention how Aerith intentionally tries to get Cloud to kiss her, and he refuses to do it even if it's high affection. Kind of significant if we're having this debate
No i disagree, she looks at him with a surprised smile, and then leans back onto his shoulder. The thing i feel alot of people miss is: IThe Aerith we've now seen run circles around Cloud, dragging him around, forcing him to do all kinds of dumb, silly nonsense, bantering with him despite him being dumb and stoic etc over the course of 2 games..... If she WANTED to kiss Cloud on the Gondola, she would have done it. She would have taken her free hand and pulled his face to hers and kissed him after he initiated holding her hand. If she had wanted to do that. There is no version were the extroverted, jump head first into any situation character that is Aerith, would not be willing to make the first move _if_ she really wanted to do that. On the dream date she flat out says doesn't know what "like" she has for Cloud. After all this time, she doesn't know. She knows she likes him, alot. But take what she says at face value. She does not know at the end if the feelings she feels for Cloud are romantic or not. Because by her own account, she still loves Zack 2/3 into the game, in Gongaga and she admits that Cloud reminds her of him, ALOT on the GS date. So with that said: At the church, how could she "know" were they stand if she herself doesn´t know what she feels? The obvious solution is that Aerith knows that Cloud does _not_ love her romantically. That is why she knows were they "stand", regardless of her own conflicting feelings that she is unsure of. He sees her as a friend. The closest friend he's ever had, only Zack may come close to how close of a friend Aerith was to him. And that is why she knows were they stand.

To Aerith he can't call Tifa a friend, because to him she has always been more than a friend. But yes, you have me there! Zack i'll change and make him his best guy friend. Barret and maybe Cid aswell may eventually come to surpass even Zack, but it will never be the same, since their age gap is way larger than it was with him and Zack.
It's not that deep really. Cleriths have spent decades in their own bubble, convincing themselves that "real" Cloud only comes out around Aerith, not Tifa, that Aerith knows him best not Tifa, that he is in love with Aerith, not Tifa etc etc. The trailer for Rebirth even had the Aerith stumbling into Clouds embrace and end up locking eyes closr on the gs date, so they were convinced Aerith and Cloud would kiss etc. And then Rebirth comes out and kills Clerith and only confirms "Cloti" and "Zerith". Cloud and Tifa kiss on their ch 12 date, Cloud and Tifa hold hands on their ch 8 date, Cloud and Tifa grow closer in every chapter, culminating with them almost kissing before being interupted. And throughout the main quest Aerith pushes Cloud to not take Tifa for granted, Aerith teases Cloud about having vyed for Tifas attention as a kid, Aerith smiles as Cloud and Tifa almost kiss, Aerith confirms she still loves Zack and her entire dream date with Cloud just shows that Cloud and Aerith do _not_ vibe. And her confession of her feelings litterally have her say she doesn't know if she just likes Cloud as a friend or romantically. And then Zack is part of the story, who's only goal is to reunite with Aerith..... Whom she confirmed she still loved 2/3 into the game. It's over, they just can't accept it. It's cognitive dissonance. I pitty them.

The problem is that people who are obsessed with Aerith, take her fleeting feelings, amplify them and project those on Cloud himself. That's why the love triangle is still talked...it has been confirmed Cloud only loves Tifa, but you're never gonna be able to break 27 years of clerith delusion, unless the devs state in an international interview that Cloud never loved Aerith, which is almost impossible because why should a developer talk purposefully about shipping, when CloudxAerith isn't infact part of the story?
@@laurajanco2i ¨Yup, FFVII is a game filled with plot twists and that aerith isn't the main love interest is one of them. no 1: Cloud is not a stoic, no nonsense SOLDIER, despite being presented as such. no 2: Shinra is not the main villain of the game, despite being set up as such in the Midgar intro. no 3: Jenova is not a Cetra despite being presented as such originally. no 4: Tifa and Cloud were not close childhood friends, despite being presented as such at the start of the game. no 5: Aerith is brutally murdered 1/3 into the game, despite having been set up as the obvious "love interest". And only after do we get Tifa as the POV character and her feelings for Cloud are completly fleshed out, having been mostly been in the "background" during the first portion of the game. no 6: Cloud has been in love with Tifa all his life. He tried to join SOLDIER because he thought that would make her "notice" him. That is the last reveal in the LS sequence. That's litterally the final plot twist of the game. That he has always been in love with Tifa.
I understand people that complain about this. They just don't know the characters. And it is intended by the developers, so I'm good with that. I know Cloud loves Tifa so he kisses her. And I know Cloud """"""""loves""""""""" Aerith so he is jealous(?). When these people play the final part and finally understand Cloud they will know why the dates play this way. Im personally a clerith. But i know cloud likes both girls. I dont think he's leading either girl on or anything. I will say, i have seen mischaracterization of the characters from both big ships. Cleriths can/sometimes do mischaracterize cloud and/or tifa, and clotis can/sometimes do miecharacterize cloud and aerith
mischaracterizing characters can be done on both sides, the thing is, is that i mostly seen this mischaracterization of him that is incredibly in the wrong direction of who cloud really is and thats why i mentioned this one bec its def not something cloud is or would do
As an Aerith fan, I must recognize this is incredibly disingenuous behavior coming from any fan. I think there are good reasons the kiss only happens in one scene and not in the other. At this point, Aerith has been rejecting Cloud the entire game. My guess is that she's trying to protect both from the pain of their fated separation, but all I know for sure is that the game does a poor job at communicating why she's suddenly behaving that way which is the complete opposite of how she behaved for literally the entirety of Remake (until her resolution in chapter 13 or 14) where she was basically the only one who actually accepted him. Being aware of her imminent demise would likely make her want to push Cloud away instead of leading him on just for her selfish pleasure, but that also doesn't completely feel like Aerith to me. And in the process she appears as very distant and playing hard to get, which feels very awful after her being so open and warm in Remake. It feels like we've been given the best part at the very beginning of the story and now they're only giving us crumbs for the entirety of the Rebirth until the very end, which feels awful and like a disservice to her character. I think many Aerith fans have felt this shift in her behavior in Rebirth and her new treatment by the devs, but many people struggle to put a finger on why her presence in the game often felt so unsatisfying and disappointing and turn to very bad and disingenuous explanations for it (like turning their frustration towards Tifa and Cloud, which were both, in my opinion, extremely well realized in Rebirth and very consistent with their established respective personas in Remake) which is hardly excusable tbh. I've witnessed an unparalleled amount of hate and general dissatisfaction towards Aerith's character with Rebirth, many people going as far as saying "finally good f%*€ing riddance" and some of Aerith's fan have been pushing back way too far as an answer. It has become apparent to me that FFVII's shipping culture is very toxic and that the best thing to do is probably to not engage at this point haha (easier said than done 🙃). Barely any of this toxicity was ever there after Remake where I saw near universal praise towards her character, even from Tifa fans. I think Aerith was done dirty by Rebirth in a way none of the other characters were. This could be justified by the devs planning on giving her a redemption arc in the third game, but this would require them to go pretty off the rails which would be very surprising to me at this point. I think it's easy to blame other fans for how they reacted to Rebirth's handling of the love triangle, but I think that also can be a distraction for fans to be pitted against all the while Square Enix gets away with this shit, being the one who decided to portray Aerith the way they did leaving people very jarred and dissatisfied but also unable to identify why because it's never communicated properly and then reacting (improperly I concede) to this treatment. I think it would be more constructive to analyze where the game went wrong instead of being at each other's throat throwing insults and playing the victim for having different feelings at the game. Aerith's fan ate REALLY good during Remake and now are feeling left with crumbs and are being dicks to everyone about it while Tifa's fans are generally very happy with the way their character was handled, but recognizing Aerith's treatment not being optimal not always being super supportive either and playing the toxic game instead. Regarding the kiss, I personally think it is a very interesting scene that can hardly be interpreted as anything else than pure fan service. It seems to me like it's very in character for both of them, but also somewhat irresponsable since they are both highly emotionnaly unavailable at that moment. If anything I think it paints Tifa in a slightly negative light given Cloud's ongoing mental collapse, which still works because it remains very in character for her. It can come off as somewhat selfish and "abusive" from her to go for such a move regardless of Cloud's precarious mental state, but it also fits nicely into her character arc of her moving from a selfish people pleaser who pleases other for her own satisfaction and insecurity about her value as person, to someone secure, able to express clearly her thoughts and feelings and who genuinely care about others. I actually kinda like the kiss for portraying both her openness to try to express her feelings in spite of her fear of being rejected (something she has really struggled with ever since Remake) and the part of her which still lacks some awareness for others well-being, for which she has clearly made strides throughout Rebirth and will likely continue to be explored in the third installment. Even as an Aerith fan I actually went for Tifa's date in the Gold Saucer just because it felt more appropriate at that time and which sucks because Aerith's date is actually the only one which affects the story (with the high/low affinity dream date) and in the end actually makes for a better ending, but having spent the entire game up until that point being so great with Tifa, it felt wrong to not go for her and now I'm blaming the devs for it haha
I agree with Aerith's writing in Rebirth and made a video on the weird writing they did for as well. She was vastly different compared to her Remake writing which confused me through my playthrough and made go, wth is going on. Why is she being written this way. I cant give a definitive reason as to why, but I def agree and see why Aerith fans might not be the happiest with her writing, despite some great moments for her. That's a reasonable assessment and yeah, Idk why they would need to use that frustration against Tifa. Like its hardly her blame at all for the way Aerith's writing went and then try to say things about Cloud was also weird so I dont quite get why. The affinity system is more so for to build bonds with the characters and seeing fun moments they have with Cloud bec its all in the POV of cloud and how he responds to the moments with the affinity system and thats something that the devs also spoke about how they went about the affinity system. I dont blame players in thinking that the affinity system works the same way as like a dating sim, bec this type of system is usually focused around that. Instead, what they did was make it through Cloud's POV and how he responds and i think they didnt make it clear enough for the player to understand essentially. This is my interpretation by the way so if people disagree, thats perfectly fine and understandable. I've just played a lot of these type of games with similar systems, so I can tell what the devs were trying to do and why it felt so different. I actually enjoyed aerith's GS Date. While I do not nec believe that her date is the canon one, but I'm not gonna telll you you cant think like that either. It's really just this weird takes some fans are giving to Cloud which twist his character in some weird way that really bothers me more, bec I personally view it as slander towards Cloud's character essentially. Like I have no qualms with who people ship, but I dont like it when fans have to change something that isnt about cloud to fit the narrative they want to give. In the end, I dont have an issue with the ships, I enjoy who i prefer, but I also like seeing how other ships moments are done bec I enjoy that type of writing. I think its because Aerith is more popular as a character and ship with Cloud than Tifa is so you hear more Aerith fans being loud about stuff like this. Here on RU-vid literally everyone ships Cloud with Aerith. But its all just a silly video game in the end 😂
This is patently false. Any recent poll, both in Japan and in the West, the results show Tifa is the more popular character. But you’re right in the second part: Aerith fans are loud. Tifa fans don’t have to be. Aerith fans going around arguing under people’s fan videos only shows their insecurity. You say here on RU-vid, everyone ships Cloud with Aerith but that’s also not true- just look at the number of views for Tifa videos or CloudxTifa videos-they are 2x or 3x more compared to Aerith videos.
I definitely get the feeling of being outnumbered, there are so many Tifa fans over Aerith fans. I think there's a reason Square chose Tifa as a PS4 background over Aerith a couple of years ago. I've also seen so many videos on my RU-vid feed promoting Tifa and Cloud as a couple. I don't mind, folks can like what they like. Tifa is an amazing character too I can see what attracted fans to her.
Depends really, I see both a lot, but most of it is just enjoying seeing people react to scenes in rebirth and im glad to see people happy. The stuff I see that usually I get bothered by are on X/twitter and stuff. At the end, I dont hate any ship, as long as the characters are within reason.
