In 2020, Square Enix released its most ambitious game to date - an effort to remake one of the absolute all-time classics, Final Fantasy VII. So big was the task ahead of them that they decided that the only way they could do it justice was to release it as a trilogy. The 1st game in the series proved to be a hit, despite being set entirely in the Midgar portion of the story.
Fast-forward 4 years, the trilogy continues as we finally get to step outside of Midgar and experience the beautiful world of FF7. The shackles have been taken off and we begin an exciting part of the adventure that will take us to many different towns, locales and habitats. The story ended in Remake roughly how it did in the original, as Cloud and his friends begin their hunt for Sephiroth. We will be picking things up by first getting to experience Cloud retelling the story of what happened in Nibelheim 5 years ago, the incident that drove Sephiroth to madness and set him on course to destroy the entire world.
On the one hand, we know the story, but on the other, Remake ended by throwing us a huge curveball and setting up events in a way that appear to be quite different from the original. They have dubbed this part of the trilogy the "Unknown Journey". So just what will change, and who will be affected remains to be seen. Having received critical acclaim and built off what was a strong formula in Remake, Rebirth might just be the best Final Fantasy we've had since the golden era. Let's find out together ;)
