Full demo and review of the CL-2 Cloudlifter from Cloud Microphones.
The Cloudlifter adds 20-25db of clean gain, which is perfect for your low-output dynamic or ribbon microphones.
Many audio interfaces don't have the minimum 60db of gain that microphones like the Shure SM7b or Rode Procaster need to perform well. The Cloudlifter gets your mic up to a good level so you can use it with pretty much any audio interface.
But, even if your interface has the needed gain, sometimes when you drive a preamp really hard, you end up with a high-end hiss or distortion. By using the Cloudlifter, you can turn the gain down on the interface, get a good level, and avoid the preamp noise.
You could also use the Cloudlifter in conjunction with a standalone mic preamp to avoid driving the preamp as hard and thereby avoiding some 'color' that some preamps add to the signal, which you may not want in every case.
The Cloudlifter CL-1 and CL-2 are powered by Phantom Power, so no need to plug it into a wall. The Phantom Power is NOT passed on to the microphone! So you can NOT use the Cloudlifter with Condenser Microphones that require Phantom Power. This is not a big deal really though, since most condensers don't require near the amount of gain that dynamic mics require.
The Cloudlifter CL-2 is the same thing as the CL-1, except it has two ports. You can use them at the same time, or one at a time.
Of course you don't HAVE to use a Cloudlifter for mics like the SM7b. There are plenty of preamps that have the gain needed to drive low-output dynamic microphones. What makes the Cloudlifter special is that it's Phantom Powered, the gain is fixed, and it provides clean, uncolored gain. All of that makes it simple to use and quick to setup.
The Cloudlifter can unleash your microphones, make them more usable, and sound much better.

Great video. I realized I needed to buy the Cloudlifter for the new Rode Podmic. No one is talking about how that mic needs a mic gain, I'm having to boost my Presonus Audiobox to the max which is introducing a lot of noise. Order the Cloudlifter on amazon, thinking this will solve my issue.

No one is talking about it because most people who look at dynamic mics realize they're more quiet by nature. Any dynamic/ribbon mic would need something to boost gain. Whether it be a fethead, cloudlifter, klark teknik. Condenser mics don't need these things and usually tend to be more common.

Thanks for this. I just needed to see how it worked. So much easier to understand while seeing in practice. I had this in mind though..So u put the gain up to say an acceptable amount of gain on pre amp then the booster will add CLEAN gain from say 5-7 on the pre amps gain. Is this then the same process with a passive ribbon? I will need one to protect it from the Tascam model 12 ppower.

@BenoniStudio

The Rode Procaster works well and isn't that expensive. The new Rode Podmic is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't used one yet. The Shure SM7B is great, but it's $400 and you'll probably want the Cloudlifter even though the Zoom H6 has enough gain - it gets a bit fizzy above 7. You could also go for a condenser mic like the AT2020 or even any of the MXL mics that you can get for $50-100. Like the MXL 2008, V67, or 770. They will all sound good with the proper EQ and compression.

I just bought a Cloudlifter CL-1 but it seems very prone to interference, I paired it with my sm7b and my dbx286s which I had for 4 years, I wanted to facilitate a little for my preamp. have you experienced interference in the cloudlifter cl-1?
@GameAbuseStudios
@GameAbuseStudios 2 года назад
I have, and Your described setup is exactly the same as my old setup, I ended up replacing nearly the whole line not 3 months ago. going from my SM7b to the CL-1 through the dbx286s and then into my scarlett 2i2 I had done my research and found so many people saying this was the best sound quality they've ever produced... Well I did want the best! But I tried and I really tried to like this setup, though it had a lot of interference! so I was off to the races again spending hours trying to find an answer, first I tried replacing the XLR cables then after no change I thought maybe it's some kind of radio waves interfering, so I separated all the parts as far from each other as I could (15 feet each with my pointlessly expensive new cables) and changed the location of everything to no avail!... ok I thought, why is there still a deep hum like buzz? I noticed that the cloudlifter would amplify this sound when I touched it, so I opened it up and took a look. It's simply because the ground is soldered directly to the metal frame and is only an issue when I'm actively touching it. so I removed the CL-1 and cranked up the gain on the focusrite 2i2... ok but i still have a buzzing sound... why? I mean there is more buzzing now, however the buzz that's produced by the preamps in the 2i2 is at a higher frequency. and thus I ruled it out, now I was left with only one thing to check... the Shure SM7b, but how do you test something like that? it's just got one plug?... So I did a ton of searching and have probably been on every page about the SM7b and it's noise ever created on the internet. I found one thing by the youtuber Julian Krause. The answer lies in a little hack involving a 150 ohm resistor and an old XLR plug. So I did some soldering and with the CL-1 and the whole rest of the line and plugged that dummy plug in, to my surprise with that plug that's basically simulating the SM7b there was no more noise, dead silence. so I bought a Sennheiser mkh 416 and never looked back. after hearing the mkh 416 I am now contemplating burning the sm7b and posting a video of it melting in hell...

The Cloudlifter is only for DYNAMIC microphones. The ST169 is a Condenser mic and will NOT work with the Cloudlifter. Condenser mics usually don't need as much gain, so you are probably fine with your current interface/preamp

Hello I just bought the cloudfilter but when I plug it to my personus Audio interface (Micro SHURE SM7B), it doesn't work. Could you please help me? I don't know if I'm clear. It's surprising because if I plug the Mic to the Audio interface it works perfectly. Thank you in advance for your help.

When I used it betwteen my Rode NTK condenser mic and my preamp, however, the sound was quite muffled compared to just going straight to the preamp. That was a bit of a disappointment, I must say. Any idea why that might be?
@calebhohneke8482
@calebhohneke8482 3 года назад
I know this is an old comment and you probably figured it out by now, but you are not supposed to use a condenser mic with the Cloudlifter. Condenser mics need phantom power and though the Cloudlifter uses phantom power from your interface to power the Cloudlifter itself. It does not pass that phantom power through to the mic....It stops at the Cloudlifter. I'm honestly surprised your conderser mic got signal at all haha. The reason your condenser sounded better connected directly to the interface is because the phantom power was actually getting to the condenser mic. Hope that makes sense. In a nut shell, the Cloudlifter is designed to boost signal to only dynamic mics.
@jamesmalloch5801
@jamesmalloch5801 3 года назад
You're quite right, Caleb. The reason I got signal is because I'm using a Rode NTK condenser, which has its own separate power supply, it doesn't use phantom power from the mic preamp.

@calebhohneke8482
@calebhohneke8482 3 года назад
You shouldn't use a condenser with a Cloudlifter. When you turn on phantom power for a cloudlifter, essentially all you are doing is supplying power to the cloudlifter itself....but that phantom power doesn't pass through the cloudlifter to the mic. That is why it is designed for dynamic mics that require a signal boost. If you have an okay interface, enabling phantom power on it should be more then enough to power your condenser mic and get a nice signal. DO NOT buy a cloudlifter for a condenser mic.... Only get one if you need a clean gain boost for a dynamic mic. Hope this helps!
