Do you need a Cloudlifter--or similar inline preamp--with the Rode Podmic? In this video I'll test that out using the Rodecaster Pro and the Audient evo 4. Turns out, it depends.

This is a great video dude, really liked the simplicity in the overview of the RCP. I fiddled and still fiddle with mine and podmics trying to get perfect sound, but one mic (mine) is on a Cloudlifter and my co host (wife) is not, so I have to play with these constantly, plus you do a great job talking into that mic with out a wind screen. Thanks for you time and a great video

At -12dB, depending on if you can get loud, like talking loudly in the heat of the situation, you are likely to still clip the signal. To me, -18dB are comfortable. Run the compressor at exactly that threshold with a ratio of at least 4:1 and boost the outcome with makeup gain should give you the result you want, while making sure you probably never clip, no matter what happens. About that particular “cheap” audio interface being representative: Well, I know quite a few interfaces at that price tag easily capable of peaking the PodMic. 😅
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
This is good advice. I never get that animated but I'm sure it would be easy for some people to get loud enough to peak from a -12db average
@RobBrogan

This is great! I was trying to figure out if it is a microphone thing or an interface thing and so you confirmed that for me - I have a cheap (UMC22) interface. I was looking at another one with pretty much the same inputs and couldn’t figure out why it was more than double the price. I noticed in the specs that it has “A/D Resolution: Up to 24-bit/192kHz” Versus my cheapo with: “A/D Resolution: 48kHz” I’m not an audio expert either but long story short I guess people can keep an eye out for that metric when shopping for an interface or get a cloud lifter. The lifter actually costs more than my interface which is why I’m trying to figure out if I just spend the money on a new interface instead of the lifter ;)
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
There are cheaper alternatives to the Cloudlifter as well. I did a comparison between it and the Klark Teknik CM-1 (which only costs about $30). The sampling rate (48kHz vs 192KHz) shouldn't affect the hiss or noise of the preamp and I would say 48kHz is pretty much a standard for pairing an audio recording with video
@RobBrogan
@RobBrogan 3 года назад
@@PhillipRPeck thanks! I see it’s out of stock near me but I think that might be a good solution. I’ll keep an eye on it. So if not that one metric, then I wonder if there’s something people can look at when comparing audio interfaces before buying. I know that roughly more price can get you more quality but hadn’t expected low gain being an issue haha. Oh well :)
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
@@RobBrogan I guess signal to noise ratio is the metric but I'm not sure that there is a standardized way that manufacturers measure and display that information. You kind of just have to read or watch a lot of reviews to find the right info. The Klark Teknik goes in and out of stock a lot but you can place an order on Sweetwater.com and they'll ship it as soon as they get more

Great video! It is really helpful and funny end lol I am using a scarlet solo and a shure sm7b so you know, another dynamic mic hungry of gain, but I am still debating if maybe I should just save and buy a more powerful interface instead the the cl1, but as a quick fix, I think is nice.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
Well maybe take a look at some of the other mic activators out there. I put links to a handful in the description. A company named Klark Teknic is bringing out a couple to the market soon that are really affordable. I don't know how good they are...but I'd sure love to find out. I also have the SM7B and definitely use the Cloudlifter. Thanks for the comment
@mkygod
@mkygod 3 года назад
I can confirm that the Motu M2 will be able to handle the SM7B fine at good volumes with no cloudlifter. But if you are happy with your Scarlet Solo, it may make more sense just get a cloudlifter for it. If lack of gain is your only concern, then that'd probably be the smarter way to go instead of replacing your whole interface.

Your evo4 without the cloud lifter sounds a lot cleaner than mine. I have to max the gain out as well but the noise floor is ridiculous and it's still not loud enough. I was stuck with the same issue, EVO4 just doesn't have enough boost for the mic. I also tried MAudio 192|6 which seems to provide enough boost. However, MAudio quality is just bad, outgoing sound pops and cracks all way round. Perhaps Mutu M2 is the best fit for Procaster since it has enough gain to boost the mic without Cloudlifter.

Hopefully you could help me clarify this a bit. I have the same setup with a podmic + evo4, and I am trying to avoid maxing the gain dial because I want to avoid hums/interference (also I am not planning on any post processing/ gainboost), so dial is at ~3 oclock right now. I have a rather loud voice, so if I do set the knob to max, ~5 oclock, then I can be heard properly. Ofc my voice sounds a bit too soft at that point and I am considering an external preamp, but am I wrong about maxing gain on the interface? If I am indeed wrong, then I assume the ext. preamp is necessary when people have already maxed out their interface but still struggling to hit -10dB?
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад
I'm not sure I'm following 100%. You're not getting good levels (-10dB) at max? If that's the case, regardless of the noise level of the evo4, you should get a mic booster because you're not getting your levels where you want them. On the other hand, if you are getting adequate levels out of the evo4 with max gain, I'd say just listen back and see what the noise level is like. The evo4 is pretty quiet and you might find it acceptable. Hit me back if I didn't answer your question
@StarbucksBob
@StarbucksBob 3 года назад
@@PhillipRPeck Hey! Thanks for replying so quickly, yeah I think you've answered my question with: "if you are getting adequate levels out of the evo4 with max gain, I'd say just listen back and see what the noise level is like. The evo4 is pretty quiet and you might find it acceptable." I was trying to understand whether maxing out the gain on the evo4 (or any interface) is bad, because it'll introduce noises - now I know it does. When hitting -10dB range with the gain maxed out, I honestly can't hear a whole lot of noise or my headphones just aren't the type for monitoring, so I guess I won't be needing an ext. preamp.

Just wanted to say this was pretty helpful. I'm actually looking at the Audient evo 4 and the Rode Podmic to replace a Blue yeti microphone and a Fiio K3 AMP/DAC to free up some USB ports. Theoretically that is a huge improvement in regards to microphones. Appreciate the video.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 года назад

Hey Phil, how long are the XLR cables you use between the rodecaster to cloud lifter then CL to mic? Does length of cable matter at all?

Hi Kevin. I use 12" and 18" cables for Cl to Rodecaster and usually a 3 foot cable from the CL to the mic. Mostly just to avoid excess cable but I have read that the shorter the cable, the better. But I've used longer cables from CL to mic--6 and 10 feet--and haven't noticed any differences. so here's a question then, if you don't have a cloudlifter what mic would you recommend at $100? I just ordered the podmic but I'm seeing a lot of people saying that a booster is very helpful. I don't really want to get a booster right now I was looking at the blue ember, yeah it's not a dynamic but I really enjoy the way it sounds.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 2 года назад
If your audio device can provide about 50db of clean gain, that is more than enough for the Podmic. Depending how loud you are/how close you are to the Podmic, you can probably set your gain around 40db and get a perfectly adequate level. I don't have any experience with the Blue Ember, but if you like the way it sounds, then go for it. It being a condenser mic, you definitely won't have to worry about gain/volume issues. The only $100 ish condenser mic (XLR) I've tested is the AT 2020 which, I think, sounds pretty darn good
@yaboylevi
@yaboylevi 2 года назад
@@PhillipRPeck thanks, I'm a little hesitant on everything right now. I think the blue ember sounds better than the AT2020 but it does sound pretty sensitive. I may try it out just to see how it sounds, I may love it. I went with the podmic because my office is not treated so I'd hate to go with the blue and it picks up a lot of the room. Or, you could buy a field recorder, something like the Zoom H4N or the Tascam DR-40. Those will connect the microphone and record to a SD card, but they do not interface with your computer so you would need to bring the files into a piece of software to do any editing or mixing. If you're on Mac, you can use free software like Garage Band or iMovie. On Windows, Audacity is free, though I've heard it might contain Spyware now, so maybe look for an alternative.
