The Clouds Rest hike in Yosemite is a favorite of the park rangers; you get incredible panoramic views from over 1,000 feet above Half Dome. And unlike Half Dome, for the Clouds Rest hike, no permit is needed, the distance and climbing is manageable, and you don’t have to navigate anything like the anxiety-inducing cables section. It’s considered one of the epic Yosemite hikes and is definitely worth the effort.
The last ridge to Clouds Rest gets a bad rap for being scary. While not an ordinary experience, the ridge doesn’t offer nearly the level of the danger or anxiety that the cables on Half Dome do. I’ll talk about the ridge later in the guide so that you can master it without fear.

By far the best Clouds Rest hike video on RU-vid - you actually showed and talked about the trail and didn't fill the space with inane music. I haven't hiked this trail for more than 20 years, but I'm going to do it next year - as soon as snow/road conditions allow.

I am scared of heights and I did this hike while hiking the John Muir Trail. I agree with narrator it is still possible to do if really scared (I still am) as long as you have a kind and patient companion to hike it with that won't rush you or make you feel badly when you get scared. It was the first encounter I had with such a narrow mountain pass and it hit me hard! About where that sign starts and he says the trail "dead ends," I tried to convince my hiking companion that this COULDN'T POSSIBLY be a trail, then we see the sign. I made it to about minute 7:04 and that's the rock I laid down and clung to in fear for a good fifteen minutes I think! Then my hiking companion reminded me that the sun was setting and it would be a lot harder to get down in the dark, so even though he knew I was having a panic attack, we had to get down. Honestly, he had to hold my hand off and on for the spine, which is probably not safe but it helped and I made it! I had of course decided I was just going to have to live there! Haha, but seriously, I was really scared. I am so glad I did this and it gave me the courage to make it 3/4 way up Half Dome the next day, until I hit the ropes/climbing lines.
@Hikingguy

Thanks for sharing that, and yea, lots of people experience what you did. At least you got to experience the bulk of the hikes and didn't do anything that you don't feel comfortable with. If you don't feel safe, then don't do it. Everyone has their own personal comfort level. If you sit at the base of the cables at Half Dome you can witness it in action all the time. I know that some folks have luck crawling in the tough sections, and it works. I've crawled on windy exposed sections of mountains before. Whatever keeps you safe. Good luck with your hiking and adventures!

Being someone who’s afraid of heights, but has long wondered if I might be able to do this hike, I REALLY appreciate your encouraging tone (AND your detailed tips for avoiding the most “vertiginous” part of the final spine; very helpful!). After watching your video, it seems more likely that the distance, and the altitude, are the factors for which I would need to be most prepared. We actually got to about 2 miles from the summit before turning around because of a storm that rolled in on us on the way up. Intermittent thunder for about 10 minutes, then some lightning. @Jonnyvids14 I get a kick out of the folks that talk about off grid. Loner lifestyle. 98% of what people do is up down. After spending 28 to 45 days in the woods with the Army, 210 days in field one year, I had my dose of camping. I don't like going alone anymore. Hence, the dog dilemma. Taking kids now. I am a Sierra guy now. Weather matters. Go stand on top of second tunnel in Zion. Go up Mount Trumbull on way to Toroweap. You can drive right past fire hall to lava flow. On Trumbull you can see where it flowed into canyon. Lava Falls. Bam.

Wonderful Video! Great insights here as I plan my first Yosemite trip. I understand I don’t need a permit for this hike. Thank you for you insights!
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 2 года назад
Thank you, glad it was helpful. If you want to camp, you have to apply for a backcountry permit here > www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wpres.htm - there are some great campsites right around the Clouds Rest area, and it's hard to go wrong with any route you'd like. If you have a car shuttle you can start on this trail and then hike down to the Yosemite Valley on the JMT / Half Dome route.

Great video Cris, as always!! Would you compare some of those spine sections to those of the Devil's Backbone up to Baldy, as far as drop offs and trail width? Just curious if those who may have had trouble with the backbone sections and fear of heights, if Clouds Rest would be similar topography. Glad you're out there exploring!!
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 года назад
Thank you 🙏 It's probably a smidge narrower than Devil's Backbone, and probably a little scarier since it's on granite without a trail. I've done this with folks who have an acute fear of heights and we just crawl when they get scared and it's fine. It's only a short section. The interesting thing is that on the way back down the folks with a fear of heights breeze through it. So I think there's a hype / fear factor too.

This and Half Dome are a haul from Valley. 22 or more miles. Hot. Although Clouds Rest is higher the view from Half Dome kills it. Sorry it just does. On way up walk over to the creek at the bottom of Nevada Falls. 300 yards back. Just past little bridge on way up. After Vernal cascade.

I plan on hiking Clouds Rest at the end of June, but my group wants to start from Cury Village😩 I plan on being more conditioned & ready. It’s supposed to be 18 miles, 6300’ incline. Any tips on shoes to wear, getting over my fear of heights, elevation preparation & how much water to bring? I have Hoka One Speedgoat 4’s which fair well. Someone said I should get some waterproof boots as there may be snowy parts. I do better with heights if I’m not on the edge of steep drop-offs. I hope to God I can complete this hike! Please tell me this is doable🤣

Based on AllTrails, multiple Tom Harrison maps, and anecdotes from other hikers I put the hike around 12-13 miles round trip, but signs and one friend’s recording suggest 15-16 miles. Which is correct?

Absolutely incorrect. I just did this hike and there is Lower Sunrise Lake, then there is the pond that he shows in the video and at least 3 creeks around 1.5 miles from the summit. You can totally carry a water filter and get water. Stop spreading misinformation.

@@hemming57 the video literally shows you the pond that is two miles from the summit. And there are three creeks after that. Are you sure you feel okay, hemming uncle?
