This is a guide to clearing up your cloudy pool. The three causes are poor filtration, low or zero chlorine and combined chlorine.
The filtration of the water is probably the key to crystal clear water. If your filter is old and not filtering properly the water may be cloudy. If it is damaged, the grids are ripped or your cartridge filter has bad cartridges then you will need to replace the filter elements. If the filter is not "filtering" the water, it will be cloudy. The filter is made to remove particles and bacteria and a byproduct of a filter that is not doing its job is cloudy water.
It is also important to run your filter long enough to cycle the water through at least once, twice or more is better. Most pools can filter the entire amount of water through after 4 hours depending on your filter size. So run time is also critical.
If the filter is dirty, it will cause cloudy water also. Clean or backwash the filter .
If your chlorine level is zeroed out, the water can be cloudy also. This is due to algae growth. Chlorine helps keep the water looking clear, so make sure the levels are raised up quickly. You can also run the pool for 24 hours after adding chlorine to help clear it up faster.
Total Chlorine is the last cause. It is when chlorine combines with nitrogen elements in the pool water, urine, sweat, body waste etc. You will notice an ammonia type smell also. There are test strips that will give you your Total chlorine level. Basically you want all your chlorine to be free/active chlorine and no combined chlorine. You can add an Oxidizer like Shocktrine to help get rid of the Chloramines that are causing the combined chlorine. Shocking your pool will also work.
So these are the main causes of your cloudy pool water. It is not safe to swim in cloudy water as you may get burning eyes, itchy skin and ill. Wait for it to clear up first.

Great comments and video tips. My pool's filters were absolutely filthy, not enough chlorine and lack of run time for filtering. My pool cleared up in 1.5 hours. Thanks brother.

I have a video on vinyl pools which covers the chemistry of an above ground pool. It very similar to an in ground pool except for some things; there is very little acid demand since the vinyl liner has a pH of 7-8 where as a plaster pool (the plaster itself has a pH of 11) demands acid pretty continuously. So your pH tends to drift low in a vinyl pool. If you use tablets the pH will drop faster, so have some Soda Ash on hand to raise the pH. This is all covered on the video on my Channel

Agreed. I have worked plaster pools for over 20 years and have never carried soda ash (pH increaser) on the truck. Conversely, I always have at least one case of acid with me.

More on the diffuser: The diffuser is a plastic piece that sits right in front of the impeller. As the impeller spins, water is funneled through the diffuser into the filter. If for any reason the diffuser is not flush, it will be like a boat propeller churning water vs a sealed flow. This happens a lot on the Hayward Super II pumps. Your pool will still run, but the filter pressure will be low. A clogged impeller has similar symptoms so check that first.

A good rule of thumb is with the pool running wait 3 hours for the chlorine to circulate. Test the water also to see what the chlorine is at. 2.0-5.0 ppm is fine to swim in.

DE is the best think to dump into your skimmer. If it comes out the return line right away then there is a leak in your filter. Just add I scoop or so.
@SPL

Yes. The manufacturer says it could take a while to clear up since the sand filter is not very efficient. try also to add some Seaklear Clarifier to the water. It works well. I have a video on it that I haven't had time to upload. I actually have a backlog of 12-15 videos. I am just too busy of late.

Yes. Not sure how large your pool is but you just want to add liquid chlorine to bring the level up to 10 ppm. You may need to add more conditioner also depending on where it is a t when you test it. I suggest a cyunaric acid (conditioner) level of 50 ppm in your case. Once the chlorine is a 10 ppm or higher, you should be able to maintain a free chlorine level. You have to destroy the nitrates & organics that are eating the chlorine out of the pool. I will PM you some videos that will help you.

Phosphates are becoming more a problem over the years as it is added to everything now - especially fertilizer. It can blow into your pool from several blocks away. I have a separate video covering Phosphates on my Channel. If you are getting a lot of algae and your chlorine is zeroing out like BolsaDePiojo stated then checking for Phosphates is a good idea also. Good tip.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
Okay now i remember something from my early days when I first started, the manufacturer jogged my memory. Your pool was green if I remember correctly. A sand filter can only filter 30 microns. So the algae dust is just being sent right back into the pool. Solution: Vacuum the pool out with filter on Waste. Two more things - to test for a leak back into the pool from filter, put some regular dirt into the skimmer & see if it shoots out into pool. You may need to add a flocking agent also.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
I've had pools take two to three weeks to clear. Mainly due to how bad it was in the beginning and the age of the equipment & size of the filter. It takes longer to clear in the Summer too as the chlorine is battling the Sun also. Your Cartridge filter is relatively small. I don't add D.E. to cartridge filters at all - I think it effects them negatively. How does that saying go, "Time heals all Pools" - couldn't resist ;)

That is a DE filter in the video and the grids are replaceable. That filter in the back of my truck is an American Products Titan SS - which was about 30+ years old or older. The tank welds were rusting through.

How old is your pool filter? And what size pool pump do you have? That is a pretty large above ground pool. You can take a video of the pool and the issue and upload it to your Channel and I will take a look at it.
@SPL
@SPL 12 лет назад
Sounds like it could be a suction leak at the pump, if your pool ran dry at anytime it would cause the pipes to melt. Do you notice any water leaks from the pipe going in or coming out of pump? If not then maybe your pumps impeller is clogged. I have a video on this on my Channel - "Pump Playlist." Lastly, and this happens, the diffuser inside the pump is warped or melted. You will have to remove your motor from the pump to check this. If the diffuser is not getting a seal air will enter filter.
@SPL
@SPL 12 лет назад
Sounds like the pump is clogged. Turn off the pool and make sure it is not going to turn back on. Take the clear pump lid off, remove the basket and you will now see the hole where the impeller sits. try spinning it with a screwdriver. I am just guessing here though. What type of filter do you have? And is your backwash a push/pull valve or one with a handle that you spin on top?

Check the chlorine levels and if it needs more go ahead and add some. I think it will clear up over time now. I would run the pool 24 hours and see how it looks. The Shocktrine will help and a clarifier also helps. But I just usually let time take it's course and have had good results. A good chlorine level and a clean filter should do the trick in most cases.

Not sure what causes that - my guess is that the the pool's circulation is a big factor. I once added some Soda Ash to a pool with a broken grid (I didn't notice until later) and that pool was cloudy for a week. A very experienced start-up guy taught me to just pour it in the skimmer to prevent the pool from clouding up. I have been doing it that way and have had good results. Some will blow back into the pool return lines but it does reduce the cloudiness by 90%.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
You will need to add some Conditioner to protect the chlorine level. Even with tablets you need to have a good initial conditioner level. What size and type filter do you have for your pool? How long is it running each day?
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
In that case if the filter is in good condition and your Conditioner level is good then you will just need to Super Shock your pool. That is a pretty big pool - maybe 25,000 gallons or so. You will need to really dump a lot of chlorine in - maybe 4-6 gallons of 10% liquid chlorine and run it for 24 hours. After 24 hours if it has zeroed out add another 4-6 gallons. It sounds like a lot but you want to raise the level to 10 ppm or higher to get rid of the cloudy water. Rain is a factor too.

It takes time to clear up. Just make sure pool is running as long as possible 24 hours is good and the chlorine level stays high - 5.0 ppm or higher.

It should clear up with the new filter installed, just make sure you charge it with the correct amount of D.E. It takes about half or less - I can't remember the exact amount. You can also add a Clarifier to the water -SeaKlear is a good one.

Then I started the filteration system and return jets started shooting sand in the pool. Then I fixed the based issue and re-started the filteration system and noticed that the jets are shooting less sand now, but still shooting sand. Can you recommend a solution? Thanks

You should add the DE right after you do the filter. For the video I moved the DE part back to focus on the chemicals first. It's not harmful to add chem 1st, but you should charge the filter first. You should be able to find YellowTrine st your local mom & pop pool store. I use it pretty exclusively for all algae problems. Chlorine by itself will not destroy algae.

That would be odd. But I have noticed with the Pentair IC40 salt cells & to a lesser extend the other brands, the calcium blow back can be so severe that it can probably have that effect. I have skimmed the bottom of such salt pools and felt lots of resistance as the flakes fill up my leaf rake. Did you notice a lot of calcium flakes at that account?

Take the filter apart and check to make sure the grids don't have any holes in them. Even a small hole will interfere with filtration. You may have high Nitrate and Phosphate levels also. Maybe try shocking the pool and adding some type of algae treatment again. You can also pick up a bottle of Phosfree by Natural Chemistry and add that to the skimmer (follow the directions). I've had good results with lowering the Phosphate levels down. But it could be just your filter grids.

I wonder what kind of shock you are using -if it is Dichlor shock that may be causing the problem. Dichlor granular is fine but Dichlor Shock is packed with conditioner. How to tell if you are using dichlor shock: it will say something like 55% Dichloro... and 45% other ingredients. This will cause what is called "Chlorine Lock" - it will raise your Conditioner level to ungodly heights and cause cloudy water. Dichlor granular is 99% dichlor on the other hand. Tried to send you a PM also.

I have a Pentair Pool Chlorinator (Model: Intellichlor IC40). The flow and salt level lights are green yet the unit is not producing chlorine. I need to add liquid chlorine every 7 days to prevent green algae growth. I understand that there may be a couple of parts within the unit that could have failed and need to be replaced? The unit is only 3 years old.
@SPL
@SPL 4 года назад
Try cleaning the cell and then run the pool for 24 hours. The IC40 should produce about 1 lbs of chlorine during that time.

I have green dust on the floor of my pool should I try to vacuum to waste or to filter. I just don’t think vac head will pick up I have lil wheels and they say not to use brush type with gunite pools so any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You can use a brush vac in a gunite pool without issue. A wheeled vac going slowly will work. Add about 1 inch of water first and then take your time and vacuum to waste. 👍

Question: I put some shock in my pool (granular type) and it didn't dissolve. I didn't realize it was the shock that caused it until I put more in. Now my pool is cloudy as heck and there are white specks all over the surface. The filter doesn't seem to even notice this junk. What can I do?
@SPL

Just keep the pump running and try to vacuum it up from the pool bottom.
@BarryHarrellYouTube

@@SPL Roger that - it seems to be getting better. I think my sand needs to be cleaned so I got some sand cleaner and plan to use it. The sand hasn't been changed or added to in - I guess 14 years. We got way behind on clearing it this year because of a back injury. The leaves and long palm fronds were all over the place and kept clogging up the vacuum line. So we just used a heavy duty net and kept sweeping and scooping it out.

Small pool. Big problem. Just a decorative pool, fountain in middle. Filter seems to be working fine, but water is very milky. I may have overdone it with the algaecide. Could that explain the cloudiness? Also I just did battle with slugs in my dahlias. Do they go into pool with brick sides? Seems unlikely, but their 'trails' were around the pool. Help?
@SPL
@SPL 12 лет назад
If you just backwashed your filter, you may also be low on water. This happens a lot of also.
@SPL
@SPL 11 лет назад
Maybe the algaecides have zeroed out your free chlorine levels. Are you showing any chlorine when you test the water? Snails will enter the pool but will quickly drown. Too small of an organic contaminant to blame it on them. My guess is you need to shock your small pool - but with liquid bleach or liquid chlorine preferably.

I'm glad I found your video and I hope you can help. I see that you actually respond to people and I appreciate that. My pool is cloudy and so far the pool place has told me to put in 10lbs of sodium bicarbonate, 10lbs of conditioner, and a triple dose of clarifier. The pool is still cloudy and will not hold chlorine. Next, they said I probably need to replace the cartridge in my filter so before I spent another $100 on that I had a pool service come out. He said my filter is fine and phosphates were high so he put in some phosphate reducer. The pool is still cloudy. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
@SPL
@SPL 10 лет назад
That was smart of you to call someone out to look at it ;). Both the Sodium Bicarbonate and the phosephate chemical will add to the cloudy water. I suggest a longer run time until the pool clears. Maybe a filter cleaning after a 48 hours of adding the Phosphate product. Acid washing the filter cartridges is also helpful. I've got a video on it. If you can't find it let me know and I will shoot you the link.

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 They said not to clean the filter for 2 weeks after adding the conditioner. It's been almost 2 weeks, so I will do that in a few days. I've been running the pump at least 10 hours a day and a couple times ran it for 24 hours. I will look for your other video. Thanks for the recommendation.

hey Mr. DG, another great video. on your advice yesterday I did not drain my pool, I cleaned the filter,scrubbed all the algae out, added three bags of shock and since I could not find Yellowtrine at my local Leslie's, I hit it with another dose of their Pool First Aid. I got up this morning and my water is already blue, great sign but its still super cloudy. I have not yet hit it with a bottle of liquid chlorine, so should I do that today? Would you also suggest ShockTrine to help clear it?

The pool is green and cloudy, I started to clean my filter, added DE, chlorine and acid. I set the filter in high speed, water return to jacuzzi, at first the jacuzzi's water is clear, about two hours later, I clean the filter again and add DE, I thought it's going to be more clear for the big pool, however the jacuzzi is green again, I really don't know what is wrong.

Interesting but not the answer, we have sand filter with zenolite which we backwash at least once a day. Our problem seems to phosphate/ algae related, but when we use phosphate remover the pool is still cloudy.
@SPL
@SPL 10 лет назад
Are you adding the Phosphate into the skimmer directly? That will help with the cloudiness as the product itself causes cloudy water. Also, after adding you shouldn't backwash for at least a week. Try that and let me know and if you still have a cloudy pool I can further advise.
@jkoeberlein1
@jkoeberlein1 10 лет назад
I do add to the skimmer, I've heard that the other engineers broadcast it. I've read that we should control the algae first and then add the phosphate remover. Our FC is held around 4-5 ppm, our CC is around 2, and our pH is always around 7.4+-.2. It does sound like we maybe back washing too much. Thanks for the help.

hi , i have a question , when I switch the knob to filter , the pump constantly stops sucking the water in and the jets dont really give any water out , maybe every minute it works for 10secs then stops, should it do that ? and the water is still cloudy , i used some chemicals that is supposed to clear cloudy and dull water , now all the dirt is on the water how do i get rid of it ? thanks

But I got a Pentair Quad D.E and we had to clean it the grids the next day. Should we clean the grids again tomorrow after running the filter for 24 hours again today?

If a chlorine tablet removes a stain (I let it sit for 12 hours). What type of stain is it? How do I get rid of them in another easier way? I am a new pool owner who is still learning. I have a Anthony and Sylvan Gunite pool. The stains are at the deep end at 8 feet. To add to my dilemma my pool pump just went up and waiting for an available tech to change out the motor. Any suggestions?

Sounds like an organic stain. Raise the chlorine level to 10 ppm and see if all the stains lift in a few days. Of course with pool running once you get the new motor put on.

If I only have 500 gallons of water in the pool/spa and it's very dirty water, is it better to fill up the pool or to treat the small amount of water as is? The water level is nowhere near the skimmer level but covers the drain. Can I put the pump on?

The filters are unicell C7470. There is no debris in the returning water. The water is finally beginning to clear after many days of running the filter 24/7. I was wondering about one thing. The manual says to add .75 lbs of diatomite to every 100 sf of filter area to new pool water. We changed our water last year. I thought that only applied to earth or sand filters. Back to the present problem. Could it have just needed a lot of time? I was thinking of doing one more shock?

The DE is all blowing back into my pool! I replaced all the backseat valve O-rings and it is fully closed. The filter grids are in like new condition (not that old) with NO tears. I have seated them correctly in the grid holder and tightened down the nuts. The O-ring that the grid attaches to is in perfect condition and the return tube is fully seated! The problem came on suddenly. What gives?

Check the air bleeder on top the manifold. Also check the manifold for cracks.
@jakejones5736
@jakejones5736 2 года назад
@@SPL Bleeder is fine. Manifold previously had two cracks along side the bleeder that had been repaired with PVC cement. The water got green so I hit it hard with chlorine. When I removed the grids today seemed to be mostly coated with a lot of DE recovered from the pool (sweeper/skimmer). Again I added no DE and will check in a couple days to see if it collected more. This is because I added a lot hoping to get it coated and now it's all in the pool. Will give update. Thanks!
@jakejones5736
@jakejones5736 2 года назад
@@SPL Ok. The reason why I replaced the O-rings in the flush valve is because one of them was pretty beat up (chunk out of it). The filter indeed collected more DE. So I cleaned it again (full disassemble) and let it run another day. This time NO DE, but it was heavily coated with bright green algae! I cleaned it, and added 10lbs DE (Pentair 60). The first day you could not see the bottom of the pool (deep end). I brushed and shocked it. The second day, it was starting to clear up. Today, it's almost completely back to normal. For what it's worth, the pump runs just a couple hours a day, but I ran it twice as long the first day. So yeah, moral of the story: Have patience and keep cleaning the filters. Oh yeah, yesterday when I turned on the pump it just hummed. Great. But it was the motor capacitor. Luckily, I had one that would fill in until I receive the one I ordered. The only reason why I had one is because I'm a HVAC tech, and have a variety of capacitors. :)

a few more extra reason why ur pool might be cloudy 1)no disinfected level or chlorine in the pool 2)ph to low burning the chlorine to quick ph too high chlorine work to slow 3)dirty filter reducing circulation and affecting the chlorine check pressure gauge by ur filter system if ur gauge is 8-10 psi over the starting pressure example when star it with a clean system and ur reading was 10 psi but know is up to 18-20 psi its time to backwash is it is sand or D.E Filter if it is cartige is time to take out and clean 4) check skimmer basket for debris and ur pump basket if its is clog it gonna reduce flow affecting ur sanitation if everything is fine u might wanna run ur system a little longer

payo kraus If you use this online tool: poolcalculator.com/ you will need to add about 2 gallons of 10% liquid chlorien to bring the level up to 10 ppm which should be sufficient to destroy the combined chlorine. 3 gallons would bring it u to 20 ppm which wouldn't be a bad idea either.

@SPL
@SPL 6 лет назад
Even with good chlorine levels the pool can still be cloudy if the chlorine is actively trying to destroy contaminants in the water. I suggest raising the level to at least 10 ppm for a few days and see if that corrects the issue.
@momchi2
@momchi2 6 лет назад
To answer Raman's question - cloudiness comes from excessive amount of chloramines (product of the chlorine and organic matter it is oxidizing) His advice in the beginning of the video is correct - check your filter efficiency, run it longer but also check the amount of "free chlorine" as opposed to "total chlorine" - you will need a good testing kit, or easier - take a sample to local pool store...
