Clover Identification: Which Clover is Which?

Getting to know which clovers are which can be a daunting task considering in the U.S. alone, there are over 300 species. While there are over 60 clover species native to the United States, only about a half-dozen are found east of the Mississippi River. This video shows you 4 of the more commonly known clovers that are edible.

(1) I readily recognize all 4 of the clovers that you discussed here. In Arkansas, and perhaps other parts of the southern states, the Highway Department sows Crimson Clover seeds along our Interstate Highway medians. What you're calling Red Clover is actually pink, but our Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum) is a vibrantly dark red and quite large. It's spectacular in the spring and summer here! (2) "Chevron" is a perfect way to describe those lighter marks on the white clover leaf. On a very hot and windless summer day here in the southern U.S. you can walk across a lawn covered with White Clover and you will be absolutely envéloped in an intoxicating sweet perfume! (3) We have yet another clover here in the southern U.S., called Bush Clover, also known as Lespedeza cuneata , It is a rather tall plant that is mowed for hay in some parts of the U.S.

Thank you so much for this info! Every year our "yard" changes drastically in what weeds are dominant. I selectively weed whip, leaving plants that butterfly and bees enjoy. This year we have majority yellow clover and although there is minimal insect intrest, i have left large patches because it is so vibrant and low growing. Now I can watch for the seeds to find out exactly what it is.

The bottom flowers point downward because they are producing seed

That was very informative. Thank you. I had to tell you that I have always had a hard time getting my horse to pass by the tall, white sweet clover. He just loved it we often instead of having fast ride we’d have a slow and munchy ride.❤️🇨🇦

If you have gas....that means you don't have enough digestive enzymes. Take 1-2 TBS or a swig of Organic Raw Applecider Vinegar. From my own experience. I just swig a bit from the bottle.

I agree!!!! I learned that mistake MANY years ago!! People need to know though that, like beans, clover can produce either a breeze, wind, or a brutal storm!! 😁

Hop clover seeds can be eaten but have to be soaked over night just like legumes need soaked. If not they can cause problems just like beans do if beans are not soaked.

Native species...there are others it is just that they are not native - they are from Europe or Asia.

I have some white clover growing in a large tub, but as they are going to seed they thrown up a series of single stalks (around 5-6 inches high) each topped with a mini flattened tight cluster of tiny leaves that looks similar to a lacecap hydrangea. Strange, is this usual or is it an obscure variety?

I don't know - this sounds odd to me. It is strange!

Nice job...I hope people who choose to eat them do by foraging rather than planting these highly invasive species. They change soil chemistry and dominate ground without supporting the full complement of our native animal species (especially folivorous species, such as moths and butterflies).

I let red clover run where it wants to in my garden (despite being allelopathic) as I like to eat the fresh flower heads raw which occur at the same time as summer fruiting raspberries, which go down the hatch too. Bumblebees love clover too.

Oh black medic seeds can be eaten also but also have to be soaked.
