Love my clover plots not only for deer but the grouse, rabbits and turkeys use them a lot too. Been getting a bunch of pictures of bears out grazing in them as well over the past few weeks as well. Good maintenance info Jeff!

thanks a lot! That clover is so dang tough. It takes drought and Gly to kill it...and it has to be young. Once established it is very resilient! Which is also why there is very little reason to re-do an established clover field unless neglected for a year or more.

Thanks jeff, great video. I've got a 1 acre plot that I can irrigate off of a spring that is a mix of clover, chicory, and alfalfa. Can I spray clethodem on that? If so what rate? Also, I've heard that alfalfa won't allow new plants to grow in the field. Can I freshen up that plot with clover and chicory this fall thanks.

Jeff, for mowing clover, what height do you usually let it go to before you mow it? Also, what height do you cut it down to? What is the ideal height for it to be going into the hunting season? I know you mentioned mowing around labor day, but the height of clover around that time may be different depending on the year and weather, so I'm wondering if there's an ideal height that deer enjoy eating it most at, or if labor day can be a consistent last mowing regardless of the height of the clover. Thanks for your help!

I got a late start due to kids sports. I eliminated the winter rye I had from last fall. Now that it's June I have to eliminate the weeds which came up. Now in your opinion what should I put down. I have a quarter acre plot. I do have clover seed from last fall, its probably too late to throw down. I live in upstate NY.

Hey Jeff so I keep reading mixed reviews some say that sunflower seeds are great for deer and they have lots of phosphorus and proteins. But then I read another page then they talk about they don't have the right microbes in their gut to break it down and could kill them if they eat too much? So is it a good idea to plant them for one and two is it a good idea to steer clear from deer feed that has a large majority of it in it?

Thanks Jeff, I would be very cautious about spraying roundup on clover. I’m sure I did it wrong but I wiped out a beautiful stand of clover last year and I was really disappointed. I would never do it again

Trying buckwheat as a nurse crop for clover this tear. Gladwin county michigan with no agg. Deer eat everything
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 месяца назад
You just want to make sure that the buckwheat won't actually grow...it will kill the clover if it shades it out.

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 well i dunno i researched buckwheat as a nurse crop and found many people do it. If its an epic fail soil is still improving but my bets are the deer keep it in check. Cant keep them off of the round up ready alfafa we have now

Jeff, when you say one quart per acre of glyphosate per acre, can you tell me in approx how much water.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 месяца назад
That really depends on how many gallons your sprayer uses to cover an acre. It is likely between 12 and 16 gallons per acre at 7mph, but that wouldn't matter if it was between 10 and 20 gallons. It just depends on how much your unit uses to cover and acre and then you add the chemical.

Have you tried burnet in any of your food plots? If so, does mowing hurt it? I have it mixed in with clover. Deer seem to love it but not sure how it will respond to mowing.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Месяц назад
Hi Jeff! Mowing will not hurt SB. I used it for a couple of years on several acres around 20-22 years ago. It grew, but not enough or fast enough that I wanted to continue using it. At that time I was experimenting with chicory in various seeding amounts within clover and I found it to be a much better option...both as a food source and as a perennial nurse crop to the clover. And then I haven't seen any positive results since that made me want to try it again. It's not bad in a dry soil blend...just very low volume.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 месяца назад
Hi Stev, as long as the oats aren't smothering out the clover it's ok. When the oats are a foot or more and the clover is coming in well, you could mow down to 6" or so. You will have to mow at some point, but you just want to make sure the clover is doing well.

The definition of a “weed” is any undesired plant in the landscape. Whether a broadleaf plant in turf, a grass in a herb garden or cutting garden, or a non desirable in a food plot. It’s a weed, so get it out
