cloister /ˈklɔɪstə/ noun a covered walk in a convent, monastery, college, or cathedral, typically with a colonnade open to a quadrangle on one side. www.smogon.com/dex/bw/pokemon/cloyster/ replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen5ou-752478 www.smogon.com/forums/threads/spl-xv-bw-discussion-and-now-some-tiering-discussion.3734115/page-2#post-10068507 www.smogon.com/forums/threads/bw-ou-volcarona-and-cloyster.3734004/ www.smogon.com/forums/threads/bw-ou-cloyster.3742769/
Cloyster may be one of the most clever names in the franchise. It's a simultaneously a combination of clam and oyster while also being a pun on cloister.
solid arguments kev, however i have spent 5 minutes theorymoning about this tier i dont play and have decided cloyster is fine, making me the victor. inform the council
Ah…. Perry the Platypus…. Ever since I was a wee low ladder I have been sick of getting schooled by meta slaves when I just want to use my favourites like A REAL trainer should… But now with my newest invention I will ban all the broken meta mons so GUMSHOOS can be #1 usage!! Perry The Platypus, I present to you… THE FINCHINATOR!!!!!
@@cooperm4185 i wouldn't have agreed with that in BW per se, but Cloyster was considered a more niche win condition that needed more support than other options. I don't really pay attention to BW any more, so I'm not as invested in this outcome, I'm just saying that was just the prevailing view of Cloyster at the time.
@@johnbanks1069Also low ladder loves using shell smash mons without proper team support, so that probably played a role in people overlooking it. (BW Cloy is one of the few smashers that actually excels in OU though; most suck because GF balances the move out by mostly giving it to relatively slow mons. I remember being swept by Sturdy Crustle a few times when I didn't know how to build a good team. It's not quite on the same level as FEAR strats, but it approaches that.) Kinda like how noobs were the only ones to use things like King's Rock or Baton Pass cheese for a while, so it took a bit for people with meta knowledge to make these uncompetitive elements as consistent as possible when it came to scoring wins.
once again finch ruins a meta with his bans. He should have just adapted, like us, by running hidden power electric Empoleon. Another offensive mon fallen to the stall-loving smogon council. Thanks for everything, fraud-chinator.
After the ban of Cloyster in the B/W metagame, 38 have been found dead in Illinois, 109 injured, with the local GDP of India dropping by over 12%... How will this affect Gen 9 OU?
252 SpA Raichu Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Cloyster: 452-534 (187.5 - 221.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO The meta simply doesn't want to adapt by using scarfed fast electrics, so Finch gets to fine dine after yet another dictatorial ban, I hope Nintendo steps in.
Honestly though the RNG items basically only existed for unviable, uncompetitive cheese, and surprise evasion mechanics really do not have a place in any metagame, of any genre of game. Then again I have spicy opinions about a categorical ban on sleep moves, but go figure
When i first read the title i thought it said Cloyster was now Uber in RBY lul. I just thought "I guess stab ice and explosion are just that good in RBY"
Still really good though. Explosion is good (kills something, gains momentum, has jank), Clamp is good (imagine if U-turn had bad accuracy and you could chip somebody to death with it), Blizzard is stupid (90% accurate freezing Stone Edge lmao), and whatever goes into your fourth slot is good (Hyper Beam to capitalize off Clamp, Rest to not die). Also, being an Ice type means you can’t be frozen in Gen 1, meaning you don’t have a 10% chance of any Ice move killing you instantly
I was my car, crying and listening late 80s Norwegian black metal, but them this BKC video autoplayed and i found a new reason to live. If Cloyster can be ubers in BW, i can make in this world
Reuniclus in court: Your honor, the mitosis alegations are false, i would never divide my cell material so that there would be a copy of my genetic materials on another cell
24:12 The low health music commencing as a result of the BW community being insulted. The victory theme to celebrate the Cloyster ban. BKC continues to craft cinematic masterpieces.
You see me now, a veteran Of a thousand weather wars I've been living Stone Edge so long Where the TTar sandstorms roar And I'm fast enough to sweep back And far too strong to stop All the checks are chipped down I'm not sure if there's a tier left for me
Wow totally seems like rain is not the overarching problem for over ten years now they really keep cooking!! Maybe another complex ban of you cant play against cloyster teams if you prepare for rain team !!1
Directly dealing with the permaweather by this point is, unfortunately, a fool's errand. Every single facet of BWOU's meta evolution for the last 14 years has been based on permaweather, banning Drizzle or Sand Stream or Drought is effectively making a whole new tier from the ground up and BWOU simply does not have the player count to ensure that new tier grows since you would need to reevaluate almost every single tiering decision of the last 14 years. It needed to be something handled while BWOU was current and criticisms in hindsight of how BWOU was handled at the time are hardly uncommon, so unless you invent a time machine you're never going to see a Drizzle ban in BWOU.
@@pikminologueraisin2139 Yeah weather isn't necessarily *the* problem, but I think the BWOU council of near 15 years ago could've stood to be more critical of weather. Nothing that can be changed now.
I dont know the metagame much but I always wondered why wasn't Latios ever banned in the metagame ? A lot of people agree that it's broken, out of the broken mons it's by far the easiest to replace (Latias exists), yet it was never suspected ? What Latios brings to the meta that Latias doesn't bring herself to justify it staying in OU ?
I haven’t played BW OU in years. Kinda happy to see that my old sand team was ahead of its time. t-tar to counter the rain and set up rocks, Alakazam to revenge kill, gliscor wall, seismitoad for coverage, sandslash for offense (meta was over-teched for excadrill’s steal type, access to sand rush), 6 slot was kinda free, I tried lucario and others but the core was set. At one point, I won 20 games in a row unranked.
That bastard adores stall for some god forsaken reason and will do anything today make it the best possible way to play the game despite literally every other sports, game and EVERYTHING community explicitly banning the very concept of stalling.
Simple: Magic guard in a meta where passive damage is prevalent means it can't be worn down. Second, support from rocky helmet skarm and spin blocking jellacent means the opponent takes a lot of passive damage trying to kill the blob. It can even survive non banned pursuit tyranitar with ease. It caused so much chaos that excadrill had to be unbanned just to stop it from rampaging through the tier
trickroom + 3 attacks + life orb completely stomps faster, more fragile teams not prepared for it. The CM set can overpower its checks. Reuni is borderline broken, but not as bad as Cloyster or Volc.
Gentle reminder that if you don't play this metagame or have any direct knowledge/experience about it but are fervently judging this decision, you're exactly the type of person BKC is always complaining about lmao. Which isn't inherently wrong or anything, just food for thought.
kinda crazy that people who don't know anything feel like their opinion means anything. like, I don't play BW OU and have only some peripheral and contextual knowledge about it and my response is "oh damn really they banned Cloyster?? never thought I'd see that in an OU format". meanwhile there are people who don't know anything weighing in like they've played the tier for years or something.
Yeah. Hate to be "that guy" but it's both sides really (in this case those who agree and disagree with the ban, more broadly speaking, people who agree/disagree with BKC). Playing some tiers for myself and developing my own experience watching, reading, and playing, it turns out I disagree with BKC on a decent # of Pokémon related stuff. A lot of comments seem to just agree and be like "BKC said thing good, so thing good" etc. Again, nobody is committing a crime or anything by doing so. Groupthink is strong and I get that. Just unfortunate on a personal individual level that it robs me of reading more interesting and diverse comments lmao.
@@AndrewRKenny and I mean that's fine right like as a player of various tiers you can have very different opinions about the metagame from someone who's played the same tiers. the point is that it's important to have your opinion because it's your opinion, not because someone else said so or you heard it elsewhere. I'd argue that someone who's formed their opinion from never playing a single game of any tier but has watched a bunch of different games has a far better grasp of the metagame than someone who's played a couple games and watched a bunch of opinion videos on the tier.
I’ve said it for years these uncheckable stat boosting mons (Reuniclus, Volcarona, Cloyster, Dragonite) are the problem of BW OU. “But.. but.. they’re ruined by stealth rock!!!”
Does anyone know how mixed cloyster was discovered? I know that shell smash mixed shellder has been a set in little cup for a while now and I'm curious if the inspiration for mixed cloyster actually came from shellder's success with it in LC.
At what point do you just give up on a meta because deep inside you know it's truly beyond fucked and no amount of changes will ever save it? That's what Gen5 OU feels like to me.
And that’s another Mon on the list for banned ice types, showing how gamefreak just can’t fine a balanced medium for designing them: they are either forgettable lower tiers at best or broken beyond repair. Especially funny since the one ice mon they actually DID get just right on that medium was in the same Gen as this ban
Been playing more BW in the last couple months and I consistently hit around 1400 on ladder. After your bids about cloyster I just threw one on the team. It literally never came out or auto won the game LOL
really volc ain't a problem. it doesn't outspeed everything after one boost, can't counter priority with his own, absolutely can't shrug off steath rocks and less crit bs plus it does destroy magic guard teams I know the sheer number of threat in this tier but let's not ban smth just cuz it's a win con
"I have no problem with banning with multiole broken things" BKC finallt agrees to ban Snorlax, Zapdos, and Raikou from Gen 2 OU. At last, the metagame has been set free from its chains.
I love how the first 8 mins of the video was, to quote a certain video you did in the past "I ran Ttar because i dont want to lose to rain(and Latios) dipshit"
i think he said it stand for blazin‘ kickin‘ chicken, im not quite sure though, in watching all of the 200+ vids from this channel i forget some things
I've never even played gen 5 ou but i'm happy to see this because I hate post gen 4 cloyster. They took what used to be a bulky ice type that saw success despite its typing and turned it into an annoying matchup fish
