Sheats Goldstein House: • Sheats Goldstein House...
It's a waste that the Concannon House was demolished for this building. Still the Nightclub is interesting and it has many references to the work by John Lautner. So I thought it was'worth to make a video about it. To see how Lautner influenced other architects.

Thank you for the feature, and for acknowledging Duncan Nicholson's critical role in the development and stewardship of the property. We are great fans of your work in educating people on the work of John Lautner and always enjoy your videos. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about the project. We are currently working on the restoration of the Schwimmer House as well, and it should be completed soon.

Thank you for admiration of the video. I feel honored to get a message of the architects. Yes, its my aim to educate people about the works by Lautner and F.L Wright. Great that you're restoring the Schwimmer House, its a beutifull home, I made also video about it. I will definitely send you a message for a video about any of your projects. :)

Years ago when I was just learning about John Lautner I looked in the phone book to see if he was still in business. There was a number so I called and Duncan Nicholson answered and he was very nice and helped me find out more of Mr. Lautner's work - at the time there wasn't a lot written about him. Duncan said GA Houses #32 had a good article about him so I promptly got my copy and was invited to come by the office. Mr. Lautner was confined at home due to health concerns and Duncan showed me around the office where I could see many photos and models of his designs. I was astonished. Duncan said if I left my GA #32 with him, he'd take it to John to get it autographed for me. He did and I'm grateful. Duncan showed me the cardboard model of the unbuilt Townsend Residence for Malibu. It was awesome. I'm saddened he passed away.

really...really great story! Thank you for sharing this wonderfull story. I never had to change to meet him and never had an autograph. I started this channel to share more information about him, like you I always was dissapointed that there was so little information available about Lautner, he deserves more attention : I hope this youtube channel contributes in giving him recognition.

I've got several stories to share. In my desire to learn and understand what kind of architecture Mr. Lautner was doing, I used my copy of his monograph to try and locate the actual addresses of his houses. I'd look up names of clients in the old phone books in the LA Library and find likely addresses that I could then check out. I wanted to see what I could and also compile a list of all these addresses to share with anyone interested in his work. One such house eluded me for a while, not sure if I had the right address. I went there one evening after work and sure enough it was a Lautner. While standing on the sidewalk out front looking at the design, both owners of the house arrived in separate cars at the same time. I introduced myself and I had brought along with me the monograph to explain why I was there. The wife was terrified that some stranger was lingering outside her house. Then the man explained why; he was a professor who worked at UCLA's psychiatric department and his wife held a worry some crazy patient might show up one day. Because of the monograph they invited me in, showed me the house and we sat on the couch for three hours looking at Lautner's book together page by page. They loved it and had yet to get their own copy. They were very nice.

The Concannon House should have been protected and preserved. I feel that ALL of Lautner's designs were masterpieces except for this one, which is really just a monument to one man's ego.

This isn't a house by Lautner. The club has some great design features but I am 100% agree with you that the Cocannon should have been preserved.

It's a very interesting video, Jop, about a spectacular building, but I agree with you that somehow a way should have been found to preserve the beautiful Concannon House, which I know about from your video. It's fascinating to see the echoes of the other designs by John Lautner in the Club James.

Yes, the club looks great but I think it would be great if it was constructed somewhere else and the Concannon house was maintained and preserved. The club looks like John Lautner but Lautner's designs was more subtle and stylish... Still a spectaculair design.

Thank you again for another excellent video. I agree with your preference for the original house, however this is also interesting albeit a little less refined. Mr Goldstein has been a great benefactor for John Lautner, allowing him to pursue his art, and this has allowed us to see the results of what this master architect could achieve when he is unrestricted on the Sheats Goldstein House next door. We should be thankful to both gentlemen for the opportunity to witness this level of considered detail with outstanding results. Thank you again. G

You're welcome! i was doubting about making this video because it's not true John Lautner design and the demolishing of the concannon broke the hearts of many Lautner fans. Still I decided to do it: because it is an interesting imitation of Lautner's style. It shows his influence on it other architects.

To demolish the Concannon house was like taking a van Gogh and removing all the paint because you want the canvas to paint another picture on .
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 2 года назад
Very well spoken! the new painting is very good but still it's a waste that the old one has been erased. Hopefully the Concannon House will be rebuilt someday.

Seems the only way to the night club is down a flight of stairs has the feel of entering a dungeon difficult to escape back up.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 2 года назад
Yes, but that is has the feeling of a dungeon... that just a matter of taste, other people feel that it's building up tension when descent the stair towards the large open space of the club.

My feeling would be unpopular here, but when I heard he wanted to build a guesthouse, I thought, "You had a beautiful guesthouse. You demolished it. Why didn't you build your nightclub elsewhere?" But I'm just a woman living in the Midwest, without the money, influence & power he had lol.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel 2 года назад
Yes , if I could travel back in time I would have visit James Goldstein and would advise him to leave the Concannon House in place. The nightclub still has some great qualities so I would love to see it built somewhere else.

As a museum property it will I assume be quite accessible to the public. I am glad about that, a real party palace.

It's like comparing the elegance of the first generation Lamborghini Countach from 1970 against the Countach LP 5000 QV that fell down from the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. There's a resemblance but obesity and disproportions ruins the experience.

I someway I agree with you, but still it's an interesting project: because a John Lautner house was demolished for it and it has many references to John Lautner designs. Whether someone likes it or not: it needs a closer look to see how john Lautner can influence other architects. The next 5 videos will be about true John Lautner designs I promise......:) (so please forgive me)

Yes that was exactly what I also would have suggested to mr. Goldstein: use the original house as a club. The new building has offended many Lautner fans, still it's an project interesting enough to make video about.
