Hello I'm a huge architecture lover from the Netherlands. I was always a fan of John Lautner, but I realised that I never could find enough information of his houses and his designs. Also it was difficult to find an exact layout of his houses. I started a long search on the internet and collected many photographs. Now I combine those images with my own drawings, to create videos and to show people how the houses look like. To give people the feeling of walking through the houses. With this I want to preserve the legacy of such a brilliant architect. Later I want to expand this channel with videos of other modernist architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra. Do you like what i doing? Please support me on Patreon to allow me spending more time with making these videos www.patreon.com/johnlautner
His architecture is like music. Many small details that may seem mundane until you isolate them and explain why they're there. Then it enhances and explain why you felt the way you did. Then your warm feeling of comfort becomes an obsession.
Thank you for sharing this phenomenal video! 😎👍👍 5:17 - - artworks by James Turrell (Q: are these paintings? physical spaces? sculptures? or parts of buildings?) (the recessed light around the curves is nice + Lautner used that in the den.) Pros: He did alot w/little space.☑ Diagonal visuals (windows, walls, fireplaces, counters, deck, umbrellas).☑ Window through 3 level-staircase.☑ More intimate den + beach space under house. ☑ Window in wall of shower + skylights over showers.☑ 2-story kitchen w/lots of light.☑ Address 24444☑ Cons (where it could be improved, in my most humble opinion): Connecting the den to the kitchen for full circulation (vs smaller circulation around staircase). Greater symmetry in windows + exterior appearance. Concrete garage instead of wood. Greater access to rooftop terrace. More windows in front of house. But of course the genius in design, beauty + creativity outweighs any cons. Wonderful work on showcasing this! 👍👍
The spiral stair with skylight is brilliant. The only things I strongly dislike are the balcony doors at the far corners of the living and dining areas, as this would make it difficult place furniture in those areas without obstructing traffic to the balcony. I think these should instead be double doors, opening into the house, placed between the living and dining ares where the angled glass walls intersect.
Good comment and a good point. Honestly, I don't known how big the doors are. I guess they are large enough the carry a lot of furniture through it. The reason why there's no sliding door is due to the diagonal beams in the windows.
Yeah.. I know now. Some other subscriber previously notice me about. My mistake, sorry, I'm not a native of Phoenix, Arizona. Other than that I hope everything is correct and that you enjoyed the video!
I read about the house. But your video revealed more than one of the ingenious design element I wasn’t aware of. Thank you. Lautner was not only ahead of his time but still is.
Haha... Yes that was a movie set based on both Fallingwater or Sturgess House, both by designed by Wright. In the movie it was calle the ''VanDamme House'' A fake set but very well done!
The way the light hits the stairs is beautiful. It's very reminiscent of Fran Lloyd Wrights Guggenheim museum design where the winding ramp is lit from above showing it's beautiful curves.
Yes, haha. Sometimes RU-vid don't recommend a video for you so always keep an eye on my channel. I try to upload one video at least every 4/5 weeks. Sometimes more often than that.
Wow! Thank you! This outstanding Malibu beach house by Lautner is by far the best of all his designs. Not least of all the diagnol window structures are pure genius.
You're welcome. Great that you liked the video. Interesting that you consider this the best of all John Lautner, it would not be my nr.1 choice but it still a good choice. It's somewhere in my top 15 best designs by Lautner. The diagonal beams are genius for sure as well as the spiral staircase!
@@SuperJobbel I could agree that he has created more "spectacular" and innovative designs however I feel his showplace houses have room layouts that are not as appealing. I love that you mention the Turrell-like effect of the skylight, very true and very elegant!
Thank you! I's always a lot of work to choose the right music for evey video, and to edit it with the right timing and volumes. So it's great to read that the music has worked out pretty well.
Haha... I guess the Spiral Stair is large enough to carry a hot tub over it, keep in mind that that spiral stair has no walls allowing stuff to carry up that's even wider than the stair itself. Also the walls of the rooftop terrace in the front can be opened.
Yes, the perspectives from the livingroom and the view over the ocean is wonderfull. It's an artwork how the beams are placed. Together with the spiral stair the interior is one of the best designs by Lautner.
John Lautner never settles for less than inspiring appreciation for every chosen site. A beach house and view that makes the world’s beauty the partner in this home, and each of those he designed.Thank you for this.
You're welcome, great that you liked the video. Indeed, it's true: each house by Lautner is unique because it's custom made for the site is built on. The landscape is always the partner of the house.
Superb video, Jop. Another beautiful house, ingeniously designed. The spiral staircase is very enchanting, and the diagonal beams on the windows are futuristic and very cool. Yes, I would love to wake up to spectacular ocean views like those.
This home has one of my favorite interiors. From the outside it's by far not my favorite. But the views over the ocean, the diagonal beams and the spiral staircase is what makes it so outstanding. I would love to live in this house....... Great that you liked the video and thanks for your comment. Till the next video!
The views out to the ocean from the staircase are just amazing. Jop, thanks for adding your drawings into the video --- they really help bring out the details in the design and construction.
You're welcome! It was a lot of work to make all the drawings but they always help a lot to better understand the houses. Thanks for your comment and Till the next video!
Thank you. Your reaction stimulates me to make more videos! So more content will come up soon. Also great that you praise my narration because in the past, I sometimes strugled with the English language and pronounciation.
@@SuperJobbel We'll look forward to those. As for your narration, maybe you did struggle in the past, but you have something wonderful and unique (these days!): charm. I think that's why we all like you, as much as we do Lautner's homes. Have a great day. :)
Once again, Joop, you've managed to floor me with another excellent video, but this time even with a Lautner house I'd never heard of! I'm sure I've never come across this one in any of my Lautner books. How is that even possible? And what an amazing, hidden jewel it is, too! Well done, my friend!
Yes this house is little known and it's rarely mentioned in any book by Lautner (only Frank Escher's book has a page dedicated to it). It's a shame that hardly anyone knows this house. It deserves more attention: that's why I made this video: to show people the beauty of the design. Hopefully discover a lot of people the art of John Lautner through the videos. I've almost finished the entire serie of all the Lautner houses just a 7 videos to come.
Mr. Cornelis you have brightened my day once again with your wonderful breakdown and review of the design details of yet another amazing Lautner creation. I must seriously thank you for your hard work which I know is a beautiful labor of love, respect and admiration for the creative genius of our favorite architect. One day, when you have exhausted his entire body of work, I hope you release a complete collection of you work in this regard as I will gladly be the first to purchase such an epic. You are creating an important archive Brother and I admire you greatly. Cheers and I hope I see your next episode soon.
Thank you for your comment. Great that you like my videos. Your positive reaction stimulates me to make more videos. Just5 videos ahead and then I have captured all important houses by Lautner, but after that I'm gonna make videos about the works by F.L Wright, Neutra and the Case Study Houses. Also I'm gonan remake some older videos about Lautner homes (like Bob Hope House, Arango, Elrod) but then with more info, better pictures and better narration) So stay tuned!
So happy for this new video to come into my stream when I was sat at the keyboard. This fact has prompted me to comment for the first time. This video channel and the wonderful way you present these beautiful buildings is one of the reasons I switch on youtube in the first place. Architecture is the "profession" that surely has the most impact on people lives and John Lautner is at the very pinnacle of this business. Please never stop drawing our attention to these masterpieces in such a wonderful and innovative manner. I am extremely grateful to you.
Oh wow thank you!!! What a hearthwarming comment. So great to read all the positive reactions. Your comment, and the many other comments, stimulates me to make more videos. So thank you! Keep watching and I will go one with making more videos about the beautifull homes by Lautner and Wright. You're welcome!
Thank you for your comment. I really like to read all the positive reactions. It stimulates me to make more videos. I've already made a serie of videos of John Lautner homes, a serie of videos about F.L wright homes will come up soon.
This is my favourite channel atm.Perfectly and professionally explained in a very calm mannerr.Thank you so so much.Lautner has grown lately to be my favourite architect.
It is a spectacular house, well suited for large events. I've never seen anything like it, except maybe Elrod House. I agree that it would have looked better with John Lautner's intended furniture, and without the murals. But the house is impressive in any case.
Yes, the house is amazing en spectaculair but it could have been better if John Lautner had complete creative control. When I made this video, the house was under renovation. After the completion of the renovation the house became much closer to Lautner's original vision. I'm planning to make a new video showing the new version of the house: showing how the house was supposed to look. The video will in better quality, with better drawings and different music. So stay tuned!
So beautiful and perfectly organic. The views from the windows are spectacular. I also love the Wright designed furniture, especially the built-in bookshelves and cabinets.
Truly astonishing, and unlike anything else I've ever seen. I love how the house is integrated with the site and the plants. Another beautiful and amazing design by Lautner.
Yet another unique house, perfectly suited to its environment. I love Lautner's solutions to the site, and the curving, organic quality of the house. Then you go inside, and comfort and convenience are not compromised at all. After all, the house must be a machine for living, yes? It's very beautiful, organic, and ingenious.
I can understand why this house is your least favorite of Lautner's designs. I actually don't much like the look of it from outside. But from inside it looks much nicer, and, as usual, comfortable to live in.
Yes, but even the least favorite design by Lautner is much better than the best design by most other architect. The house definitely has a lot of qualities.
Wow, another amazing video, Jop. The office is like a John Lautner house in miniature. Some museum should really set it up and make it a permanent installation. People would enjoy walking around and feeling how it is to be in the space.
