The world's two leading superpowers operate under fundamentally different economic and political structures, both of which have very different strengths and weaknesses. Can these countries cooperate with one other, or will their geopolitical rivalry continue to impact the world?
Join the FCC as we sit down with Kishore Mahbubani, former President of the UN Security Council, who will give us his take on these questions and more.
Q&A moderated by FCC President Lee Williamson.

The US govt didn't manipulate, it forced. Think Gina Raimondo and Nvidia. Which has now led to a DOJ monopoly investigation. That's why the Neocons now consider Elon Musk a threat to them. They are working hard to bankrupt X. And this is also why China will not treat Tesla unfairly. Kishore is also wrong about Trump. Trump has picked a VP who dislikes forever wars and RFK jr who has similar feelings. And this is why Dick Cheney one of the architects of our forever wars endorses Kamala. Kamala said she welcomes the support of Cheney. Kamala is the true neocon, in sheep's clothing.

The reason why the US economy is bigger than the Chinese economy with a much smaller population is because the US can print money as they wish without losing its value with their dollar dominance which allows the FED to play their money game of interest rate.. Imagine that taking away the dollar dominance from the US what could happen to them ? Can the US still be able to compete with China ? Definitely not as it will be a smoothly walk over by the Chinese in any field..

China has been the world's largest economy since 2018 in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) GDP, which is a much more accurate measure of the size of an economy than GDP. China's GDP comes mostly from manufacturing, whereas thet of the U.S. comes mainly from financial services & increases in the value of financial assets like stocks & real estate. Furthermore, China’s dominance in critical technologies is evident, with the country leading in 37 out of 44 areas tracked. This is attributed to deliberate design and long-term policy planning, as well as the country’s ability to attract and retain top talent. As a result, China is poised to establish a monopoly in certain areas, while Western democracies, including the United States, are falling behind in the race for scientific and research breakthroughs. Finally, in 2021 China produced eight times as many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) graduates than the U.S. , and the difference is still growing.

30% to 35% of the US GDP is its private health care system and it's pharmaceutical industry eye gouging and over charging the American people for medical care and medication payments when they get sick. I kid you not, look it up. Another $1.5 Trillion of the US GDP is interest payments in late fees banks and financial companies charge their lenders. The rest is real estate, insurance, and finance If you measure up the actual tangible things produced and manufactured in the United States can actually be touched, exchanged their GDP is like 60% to 70% the size of China's. However, he should have mentioned that he might based it in nominal GDP and not GDP PPP because these distinction said a lot and it explained why as he said more people in the US are marginalized due to expensive prices of goods and services. While in China, goods and services are more affordable and citizens have more savings.

The US economy is larger than China's economy only in nominal terms. In terms of purchasing power parity, China's economy trumps the US economy. I would argue that purchasing power parity is a better measure of economic strength than nominal GDP.
@thecomment9489
@thecomment9489 12 дней назад
The US economy larger than the Chinese economy even in nominal terms is highly doubtful because much of the US economy is made up of hot air that is Ponzi schemes and inflated stock prices. Like Apple is valued at 3 trillion dollars. Is it believable? Nvidia is valued at 2 trillion and same goes for many other US companies. similarly they also have lots of soft forced transactions which only help in inflating the US economy. It can be better understood as this. Russian economy in Feb 2022 was only about 2.1 trillion dollars against EU's 15 trillion dollars. And look how badly EU has fared in the ongoing conflict. Similarly if China-US war breaks out same will be the fate of USA. All their hot air economy will be proven to be nothing in defeating Chinese economy.

I would disagree with Kishore with respect to his observation about China upsetting the American businesses cohorts. In my opinion regardless of what China would treat them, American businesses cohorts would turn against China. As China's economy develops and upgrades, Chinese manufacturers and businesses move up the goods and services supply chains to compete with the Americans. Therefore, it's natural for American businesses communities to turn against China rather than staying friendly to China.

Of course, Mahbubani believes in democracy. So do the Chinese. The thing is that democracy comes in different forms. Liberal democracy is based on a system of multiparty elections. Chinese democracy is based on regular consultation with the people. It is quite clear which democratic model works better. Liberal democracy has been failing in the West left and right. Just look at the USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, for example. Their economies and societies are undergoing significant turmoil. Meanwhile, Chinese society is harmonious and stable. China's economy is forecast to grow 5% this year and 4.5% next year (according to the IMF), far better than all the G7 economies. India's democracy has done the country no favor since going independent in 1947. Taiwan's democracy is a running joke.

Western democracy is a popularity contest. It is possibly the worst form of way of choosing a government Instead of choosing people based on proven merit, and past accomplishments they choose people based on whether whom would you like to invite for dinner with your family the most. Furthermore, the average people are not wise enough or educated to make the conscious decision on who should run the country, what to do with their taxes, or who should take them to war. The entire system was designed when the country (US) was mainly rural and made out of small towns, villages and communities of a few dozens, hundreds and very rarely a few thousand people where everyone knew each other. The system was not designed to govern 337 million people.

I've heard Mahbubani speak before. For the most part, his grasp on the geopolitical and cultural sides of things seems reasonable. However, his opinions here on the strengths of the U.S. economy were shockingly uneducated. The U.S. has not been a real economy, standing on its own 2 feet, since WW2. The only thing that keeps it afloat is being able to force the world to transact in the USD since it, quite literally, went bankrupt in 1970, unable to repay its gold obligations. When you can print money; attract the world's best talent; and control key technologies, it's not surprising that you produce good entrepreneurs. But the shoe is now on the other foot, and even though China can't print money, it can do everything else and better. Agree with the fact that the U.S. is a de facto plutocracy, but it's not a recent occurrence. Any democracy in which your candidates require billions to fund campaigns is a plutocracy since the wealthy donors (read: aristocrats) will obviously only back whoever works in their best interests.

Everything or system has a natural development course and whether a particular thing or system can survive depends on how it initiates changes to suit itself to the ever changing environment. America's democratic system has stopped to grow because it has created too many large and powerful interest groups that make the country's redistribution mechanism malfunctioned. The worst thing is that instead of mending their system, American politicians shift the focus to lay the blame to imaginary rivalries. Realistically, a weak China does not necessarily make a strong America.

Its already underway that the next few decades will see the fall of Western civilization and Empires (USA). Just remember the old Chinese proverb "Wealth can never last more than 3 generations in a Family". The iteration experiences of a few thousand times in Chinese civilization gave birth to this proverb. When in relation to Empires, Dynasties and Nations, it just last a bit longer depending on how wealth is preserved or spent and speeds up even faster when wealth is squandered away thru wars, corruption, bad governance, unproductive activities and poor leadership. The only hard choice left for those in such a situation would always be a shift in the paradigm of thinking and thoughts or face the possibility of revolution, civil riots and wars hence crumbling it from within.

China: 5000 years Angmohs: 500 years Lee Kuan Yew: 50 years Lawrence Wong: 5 years If you place the current world into the history of China, then you are living under the rule of the Yuan dynasty now. In the West, probably they will call it the dark ages. If you think in term of capitalism and the avaricious capitalists, then we are in the chaotic world of 魏晋南北朝 (AD220 to AD 589): The USA, the UK, Japan, Argentina, South Korea, and the Philippines are some examples, add in India if you want to expand the list. Congratulations, if you think you don't belong to the 99.99%. Ha ha ha! Show less

Wise man have said always the same thing, while the rest will do the contrary as an philosopher said once upon a time. Theft of invention is the highest crime man can do is even worst than the atomic bomb and I do not want to live in a planet where those things happen, is better to be destroyed once and for all rather than living in barbarism. In this case I talk about theft of my invention.

Sorry Kishore, biggest problem with China is communist governance system. You had to bring up yellow racism in America to justify your false logic is sad. I agree there is racism against all ethnicity in America. But you should also explain racism against none Chinese especially against Africans and South Asians. Even in Singapore, how many Indians are discriminated by Chinese. Yellow fearful Americans have many top corporate CEOs that are yellow. How many Chinese or Singaporean corporations have none Chinese CEOs?

I wonder if china's governance is a modified version of singapore's governance? Deng sent 40,000 chinese to look at how singapore was run....

"How many Chinese or Singaporean corporations have none Chinese CEOs?' So how many of these non-Chinese candidates can speak Mandarin fluently? At least in the US, all the non-white CEOs are willing to adapt and speak English. Now try getting an American CEO to speak Mandarin, before joining a Chinese company.

Indian netizens condemned kishore mahbubani for instead of calling out the west for their crimes in India in the 200 years of colonialism, he SPITTED at them by calling it india's century of humiliation. Adding insults to injuries for the victim. WHY HAS KISHORE BECOME SO INHUMAN??

Mahbubani was being truthful. India is in a very bad state because the British Empire brutalized it. India adopted British-style democracy after its 1947 independence and it has been a pathetic country ever since. Still mired in extreme poverty. Hindu nationalism run amok. Widespread ethnic/religious strife. Human rights issues, especially with respect to women. The caste system remains a hindrance. Backward education. Backward infrastructure. A per capita GDP of only $2,700 (nominal).

That is the Western political elites and media narratives. When the tourists from the West made a trip to China recently, what they saw shocked them, world class infrastructure, electric cars everywhere, gleaming skyscrapers everywhere, things are affordable, economy is thriving, streets are clean, no pollution, people are friendly, etc.
@biggpicture2930
@biggpicture2930 3 дня назад
companies cannot pay? Then it goes broke and got CCP running it.. State institution cannot pay? I think the CCP will also take over... CCP has the printing press's and money is created electronically.... so I believe salaries are easily paid.
@biggpicture2930
@biggpicture2930 3 дня назад
unless the salaries are paid in usd , then ccp won't have that printing press.

@biggpicture2930 Not true. China is afraid of inflation, so they can not print new money excessively. Propaganda or not, China's economy is going through a difficult time.

Thank you professor for your insights. Only wanted to comment on the 4000 year cultural history of China - yes indeed China has a very ancient rich cultural history, very well respected, it was all sadly demolished, destroyed and desecrated by the CCP in the mid 1940s. Such cultural richness can still be found in Taiwan but the CCP has destroyed most of it in mainland China. I truly wish that they can bring back the lost rich culture 😢.

If you study history, you ll understand. When China claimed the islands in 1946, no one contested. That is because US is good friends with KMT. If KMT continued to rule China, none of this issues will occur. It is all US playing politics of divide and conquer.

You don't speak up for China, because you are Chinese, but because the west has been lying about China and their medias are very powerful. Kishore speaks the truth and every thinking people applaud him for that. Sadly there are people who bought into Western lies, and manipulations.
