The U.S.'s Struggle in the Global Critical Resources Battle

U.S. officials have spoken at length about the urgent need to end their country's dependency on China for the critical resources needed to power next-generation mobility and technology.
Part of the solution, they say, is to compete directly with the Chinese for lithium, cobalt, and other critical mineral mining rights around the world. The problem is few U.S. mining companies today do that kind of work in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia where these resources are found.
But the U.S. is geologically endowed, prompting loud calls to mine these resources at home - which raises another problem.
In his new book "The War Below," Reuters correspondent Ernest Scheyder explains how powerful stakeholders have made it very difficult for U.S. mining companies to operate domestically. Ernest joins Eric & Géraud to explain why the politics of mining make it nearly impossible for the U.S. to compete with China for critical resources.

Thanks Eric and G`eraud you are doing a wonderful program. The railway in Angola was built by China even some of their engineers died due to landmines after the civil war , at a cost of 1.5 Billion dollars. America is estimated to invest 200 Million dollars. The Port and Railway are already in existence. Just minor improvement and a short extension. The "Lobito Corridor" is more of a propaganda branding. China has invested more in this corridor than what the US is proposing. I enjoy your show, it's amazing thanks.

As usual, very informative and thought provoking discussion. I have one observation on the idea of a regulatory framework that places standards on mining sites, like IRMA ( The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance). History has shown that sometimes institutions can we used to advantage some groups while disadvantaging others. IRMA could be used to label certain countries or operations as not ideal and funnel the industry towards preferred operations, say like Western owned consortiums. It may end up being an instrument of lobbyist used against Chinese firms or Global South Countries. Label like Blood diamond, Venezuelan oil, etc illustrate this.

Yet another book to add to my list of books to read. Another informative discussion and interview team. Regarding the paralysis of Western democracies, it applies at virtually all levels and all sorts of topics too. From public infrastructure to housing, things move at a glacial pace if they are even moving at all. The ability of anyone or group to basically halt a project by subjecting them to onerous reviews was something the writers of these laws never even intended them to be like. A lot of talk about fixing the permitting issue but I have yet to see action. Lot of talk from commentators, pundits and think tanks, but talk is cheap. And as you guys noted, one asks why they even bother trying to compete in a game they cannot win. A great discussion guys.

Global mining companies will always seek for the places where's there's no legislation and mining is brutal for the society because it'S more efficient and profitable to steal and destroy in these place than produce it properly.

Why don’t we cooperate instead of fight wars? Let’s buy minerals from China and allow them to buy chips from us. We don’t need to make everything by ourselves, and force China to make their own chips and everything else.

Well to be fair the conversation is quite short focusing on the supply chain as the only shortcoming for the West. Think about it. Australia has huge supplies of lithium, rare earth , zinc and most other minerals , and they hv top notch talent as well , yet they cannot match the Chinese EV industry and they need to import most of their EVs and electronics from China. So is it really just a supply chain issue or when will you guys start talking abt the obvious. The technology IP plays a huge part why China is winning , it's why VW is buying its EV ip from Xpeng, it's why Catl and Byd lead, not bcos China controls the supply chain. Supply chain is a key component but not the most crucial element of China's success. When your narrative misses these obvious points , we start thinking if your narrative is biased or not. And that Ip was Chinese made not stolen as the common propaganda goes.

Yeah, the supply chain for mining and processing is only one part of the process. This discussion wasn’t intended to be an all-encompassing look at the entire EV supply chain nor was it about the “West” as the author’s book is specifically focused on the challenges that the United States is facing. You are bringing a lot of emotional damage to the discourse because we also never mentioned anything stolen IP. Remember, not every discussion has to account for every aspect of a story this big. Over the course of a year, we produce hundreds of stories and multiple interviews that collectively weave the different aspects together. -Eric

@@chinaglobalsouth To set the record straight, there was never any stolen IP as long as the media was really intent on explaining it properly. There was an exchange for market access for IP at the time the Chinese had no IP. In fact there are many reports showing that companies never brought their latest IP (regarding ICE engines or other mechanical IP) to make sure China stayed 1 or 2 generations behind while still enjoying access to the huge market and for GM, it was the most profitable market back in 2017 , racking record sales and profits. So the exchange for IP and market access was done with the full knowledge of the western companies accepting to do so. But that is never stressed in all the western propaganda who makes the narrative sounds as if China is stealing IP when it's not. The deal is there for the taking but it's optional and is not being imposed only on American companies selectively but applied uniformly to all foreign entities including German, French, Japanese and S Korean. What we see today is selective and discriminatory application of American tariffs and laws to Chinese products and companies. The Western media keep referring to Chinese IP as stolen while in fact most of the IP today is Chinese made. But also keep in mind, industrial espionage has always existed and wikileaks leaked reports of French spying on Brazil or Canada spying on the French , Germans and vice versa etc ...

@@bobmorane4926 Exactly, well said. It gets exhausting listening to the negative Chinese rhetoric coming out the West.
