CLUE (1985) was HILARIOUS!!! - Movie Reaction - FIRST TIME WATCHING

Mrs White's 'Flames on the side of my face...'speech is ICONIC. Madeline Kahn improvised it on the spot, which is why Martin Mull's Mustard looks so confused in the background. My cousins and I watched Clue all the time, when staying at each others houses, and got to know most of the lines off by heart.

The actress who play Mrs. Peacock was also in Murder by Death.

The DVD, however, aside from having all three endings, also offers the option to play the movie with one randomly selected ending. Heartbreaking Loss Fact: The Max Busch House, the mansion used for the exterior and ballroom scenes, was destroyed by a massive fire on October 5, 2005. After the fire, several people left flowers on the front gate and even shed tears, evidence of how much the house was cherished by the local community. Random Order Fact: Wadsworth decides how the guests will be paired up to search the house by cutting matchsticks into various lengths, and the guests appear to draw these at random. Naturally, the partners were assigned by the script and the process could not be left to chance. Before Tim Curry holds out the cut matchsticks to the actors, he was given them in the correct order. The actors acted as if they were picking randomly, but simply drew the matchsticks in order from left to right.

It still gets me how a movie full of dialogue and exposition never stops being entertaining from beginning to end. The great writing along with the amazing performances by skilled actors delivering these smart lines with sharp precision really makes it work. This incredible movie tends to get overlooked, but every time I see it, it continues to impress me.

Based on some of the dialog, the set design, and the cars, the movie takes place in the early 1950s, when the issue of "homosexuals" in the US State Department, blackmail, and espionage was very current. Speaking of the cars, each guest is first seen driving a car painted the color corresponding to their character. Mrs. White wears black, Miss Scarlet wears green, and Mrs. Peacock (blue) wears gold/yellow, while the men's suits match their names. Mrs. White's confusing "flames on the side of my face" speech was ad-libbed by Madeline Kahn when she forgot her line, and the take was used in the final cut because everyone thought is was funnier than the scripted dialog.

Fun Fact: When this movie was released in theatres, you only got to see one of the three endings depending on what theatre you saw it in. I was a kid at the time, and I remember a kid in my class saw it multiple times in different theatres. (Clever way to get people to buy multiple tickets)

I would argue that Mr Green aged fine as it is a period piece. Being gay would have been something you could be blackmailed for or ruined by during that time period. It kept it true to the era. Unfortunately it’s what many people had to live during that time.

Btw, the Singing Telegram Girl is Jane Wiedlan (guitarist and singer from the 80s band The Go-Go's). I love this movie!!!

I remember reading that the murder weapons were going to play a bigger role in the movie. some obviously did, but they were going to be featured as hidden objects through the movie. Just like the candlestick above the door frame. some people don't realize it's up there until it falls down. then the gun on the floor, which gets used later. these weapons would be seen lying on a shelf or table or just somewhere the audience might be able to spot it. but most got cut out. the scene were Mr. Green says he's going home to have sex with his wife is a joke. most think it's a line he says to let us know he was never gay just pretending to be. but you gotta remember when this movie takes place. so when he says that line he's actually lying about having a wife.

So nice to see a reactor who appreciates John Morris' score. Morris worked on many of Mel Brooks' most popular comedies.

Jonathan Lynn was a master of complex comic dialogue. Just watch his classic Britcoms YES, MINISTER and YES, PRIME MINISTER...thecomic double talk is amazing.

This will always be one of my favorite 80's classics. This is a cult classic, and so damn re-watchable, like The Goonies, or Back To The Future. The 1980's was a hell of a decade for fun films.

If you enjoy classic whodunnit movies, also be sure to check out “The Last of Sheila”, which was written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins. Who were both avid murder mystery game players and often hosted elaborate murder mystery weekend games at their homes for friends which were infamous at the time apparently. I've been a big fan of this movie for most of my life. I can quote it pretty much word for word and I love to attend Clue Movie Parties and Quote-Alongs.

Finally, you reacted to this classic. Love it. Another great modern whodunnit movie was "Knives Out". If you had not seen it, I'd love to see your reaction to it. It was great fun.

I worked at a theatre when this originally played. We showed the first ending for a couple of weeks and then the other endings for a week or so each. On the marquee we put up "Clue - Ending "A" or "B" or "C" depending or what was playing.

I just realized why they picked the everyone did it as the official end. When you play the game, the weapon and killer are randomly generated, since in the game you have to have one person who did it, so the first two endings are game endings, but for the last, we get a book/movie style ending with shades of Agatha Chrisitie (think Murder on the Orient Express with multiple victims), where everyone did it.

The actress who played Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan) was also in Murder By Death. She was Sam Diamond's assistant 😃

Great review. As a MASSIVE CLUE/CLUEDO fan, I absolutely love this film. Every actor has a great share of funny lines and really played their parts excellently. There's a fan made documentary out soon. Did you notice the Hallway floor was in squares to match the actual game board ?? Edit: Here in the U.K. we've just had a touring version of CLUE in our theatres. It was brilliant.

It's almost a shame that you didn't see this before Knives Out, since I'm sure that Knives Out was inspired by Clue, and even indirectly mentions it, when talking about a "Clue Board". I think having that film under your belt would have increased your enjoyment of the Knives Out setting. They are both good films, though & I'm glad you enjoyed them both.

Watched this for the first time last year and it instantly became one of my ultimate comfort movies. It's just perfect for a rainy night, when you feel like cozying up at home.

Another film recommendation: Sleuth(1972) starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine. Renowned for it's small cast list. No more spoilers than that! Enjoy! :)

I saw this movie when it was first released. It was the last of the 'Gimmick' style movies; which asked the audience to be a part of the movie. The 3 ending were because it was released in 3 different movies. Ending A, B, and C; for which you were giving a paper Clue card with the ending letter on it. So you were supposed to keep track of what was going on, and make your guesses using the card, like in the board game. I saw endings B and C (Scarlet and Peacock endings). I didn't see ending A until it came out on VHS. This movie was scripted right down to what everyone was to say. The only one ad lip was Madeline Khan's "Flames, on the side of my face'. Khan forgot her lines, and just winged it. Normally; the director would have cut such bloopers out, but this scene had everyone laughing so much, it was left in. Only the VHS bought all the endings into one, and making one ending as the final ending. That was not how it was supposed to be. The endings were designed like the Board game; where the endings change with each play through. There was a 4th ending; but they ran out of time and money, so the 4th ending was cut.

Perfect dialog and physical comedy. Very nice and smart reaction. This one has only gotten better over the decades. You really could not assemble a cast like that today.

Love this movie! One of the first adultish movies I ever watched as a kid. Have been playing the board game for a long time too and consider myself kind of an expert haha. But it's still a comfort movie to this day. Glad you enjoyed!

I can watch this over and over, and it just gets better. Each murder is commited in a separate room, with a separate weapon, and in the final ending by a separate suspect. The writing is brilliant and the acting is superb.

Unfortunately homosexuality was considered a crime back in 1942 when this movie was set. Mr. Green would have been fired as a major security risk.

Think you're one of the few reactors who saw Murder By Death FIRST and knew of the comically unreasonable similarities-- In the theaters, the studio was so busy promoting the board game "gimmick", audiences thought they were getting an interactive "game", much like the popular Clue laserdisc-games at the time. That's also why the movie got three different alternate endings, randomly played at different theaters. (And that's what REALLY happened...)

If you liked Murder By Death and Clue, you should check out Shipwrecked Comedy's Poe Party (the title is much longer, but I forget what it is exactly) here on RU-vid. It is a murder mystery dinner party where the guests are famous writers like Poe, Hemingway, Agatha Christie, HG Wells, etc. It is pretty darn good and keeps you guessing who did it.

In my eyes, *Clue* is one of the OG examples of a “cult classic”. (I’m sure that there were others before it, but, while I wasn’t around when it flopped on the big screen, I _did_ get to experience its initial surge in popularity!) It had an abysmal run at the box office and then became _”huge”_ in the 90s! I remember it _constantly_ being on all of the cable channels and pretty much everyone I knew at the time, young and old, were familiar with it and also viewed it pretty positively. None of this is surprising to me though given the fact that the script + cast + director + editing + set + etc. = 100% Lightning In A Bottle!! Even if they did do a remake full of cast and crew who are equally as talented as their predecessors, it _still_ wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as the original due to that! In short, I freakin’ LOVE this movie!! lol.

This movie is set in the 50’s. Being gay, taking part in same-sex acts to be exact, was actually a crime back then. No idea how it was enforced though. He would have, at the very least, been run out of politics.

40:10 Yes, this movie is good in multiple watches. I'm certain the reason it's held up as a cult classic still is due to it being rerun on TV constantly in the 80s and 90s, and probably a lot since. I saw this movie so many times on TV as a kid, usually catching it in the middle or towards the beginning or the end, and ultimately would end up renting it from the video store on many occasions.

Murder by death is timeless, it has great jokes.

If you think about it, Mr. Green has to still be Gay, because Wadsworth(Mr. Body), would know if he wasn’t blackmailing Green and would know the evidence he had. There would be no reason for Wadsworth to play along with someone he wasn’t blackmailing or drop his guard at the end and give Green an open shot, he would’ve been super suspicious. So, in all endings, Green is Gay, but closeted, with a Wife, who is his beard.

When the movie came out in theaters, critics tore it apart so no one went to see it. But it picked up in popularity over the years being shown on cable tv. When in theaters, each screening was meant to have a different ending so people couldn’t spoil the movie and there is even rumor of a fourth ending that was never used.

this is one of those rare films that truly is better the second time around. don't get me wrong, the first time is awesome. but the writing is *so* clever filled with many call-backs, call forwards and brick jokes, every time you watch this, there is a new quip/gag to discover. also, one of the best ensembles in any movie, they work with the script and off each other brilliantly!

This is my favorite reaction for Clue so far. I love that you had the board game in mind throughout the movie and were looking for references to the characters and weapons. The other reactors I've seen either weren't familiar with the game or just weren't as engaged with the story. Great review, too!

Another reaction channel did this movie, they said they remember seeing it on TV, and a core memory they had was when Tim Curry was recreating the events of the movie and pretended to be dead in the freezer, it cut to commercial. So they thought for several minutes he had died. Only to come back to the movie to find out he's fine. 😆🤣

I don’t have much to add. Everyone already explained how the theatrical release only had 1 ending per theater. Because of the 1 ending , this is the big reason why it didn’t fair well at the box office. This movie is very underrated. Video rental allowed Clue to be seen more and more and by word of mouth allowed more people to see it as well. Ironically, it is now have become a cult classic. I loved all of the actors; I have my faves though. Madeleine Khan and Eileen Brennan; both are comic goddesses. But this movies is one of guiltily pleasures. ❤️⭐️🙌🏼

I think the point of the three endings is just like the board game - it’s doesn’t matter who the killer is as long as we have fun along the way.

Two fake endings? I dont think you understand the movie, because ALL the endings are viable ... and the "real" one is just the last one presented, so it must obviously be "the real one". I would suggest watching the movie "Hoodwinked" from 2005 to understand it, because everything changes depending on what someone tells you, which can be A LIE as well.

Next, you should watch the comedy movie, Rustler’s Rhapsody! I’m positive you’d like that one as well. ☺️

I don’t get why this movie has such bad reviews as it’s my favorite comedy. I think I read that it didn’t do well in theaters because when it came out mystery movies had been done to death so people just weren’t interested in seeing it. I understand the confusion over Mr. Green potentially not being gay because of his final line but you have to remember he was being blackmailed lest he be fired for being gay so of course he made that comment in front of someone he worked with to keep up pretenses. During the time this movie was set being gay was very very bad for government employees like the CIA for example felt gay employees could be blackmailed or exploited in other ways to reveal government secrets to enemy countries so it would be less than ideal if they were to learn you were gay.

I watched this movie many times in the theater in1985! We had to wait each week to see a new ending! It was released that way...I was 11..it was the funniest movie I've ever seen 💖💖💖

If you want to see more of Lesley Ann Warren, she has a great role in VICTOR/VICTORIA (1982).

I think the movie aged very well. If you had your childhood in the 1970's, when you may have received this boardgame for Christmas and saw it initially, with that genius 3 different endings you got to choose to see in the theater, you certainly have fallen in love with this film all over again as many times as you watch it. Top notch cast, brilliant pacing and reveals and the jokes you may have missed before.

It's very cool that you watched Murder By Death as well as Clue. I saw both in theaters and they each had great casts. Some of the top actors of their day. It's a brilliant move that 'Murder' got Truman Capote. He wasn't known for being in movies at all, mostly just a prolific author. ( Watch 'In Cold Blood', an adaptation of his greatest work for the silver screen. True story about a grisly murder. ) Getting Tim Curry for 'Clue' was master casting. I don't think they could have topped that casting choice. Both movies had superb casts all around. I haven't seen your Murder By Death reaction since it's an exclusive, but I'm sure it's great. One of the great and most underrated movies of all time. Fantastically smart plot, unreal ensemble of legendary actors, great comedy, and an intriguing mystery. When released in theatres, they only showed one of the endings, so depending on which show you went to, you could see one of three different movies. Tim Curry is everything; he should have been in so much more than he was. Critics were harsh on it and I never understood why. It's been a favourite of mine since the first time I ever saw it. Wore out a lot of VHS tapes rewatching. Every time you see it again, you pick up on something quick and funny that you missed before. Brilliant. Definitely became a cult hit as home video allowed people to discover how wrong the critics were (and the 3-ending version was really the best).

SUCH a fantastic movie. I’ve seen it at least 100 times. Just hysterical. So so glad you liked it.

This movie is fun to watch, it is one of my favorites. When thinking about which were my favorite scenes, I realized that it was almost easier to recreate them all, rather than pick only a few to include in my review of the movie. This is one of the fun movies to watch people react to, and see them recreate their favorite scenes. The 'Clue on Stage' theater play is good also, but I prefer seeing the fan made recreations of the scenes. I like how everyone adds their own extra bits of backstory to the characters. Mine mostly started with wanting to explain the "Flames, flames" lines, and Mrs. Peacocks taste for monkey's brains. And trying to reference as many other movies in the backstories as possible. Plum only has a few months before his famous November 5, 1955 meeting, ;) Remember Plum is just an alias. So who was he really? ;)

There's something incredible about a movie being this great being based on a boardgame.

I saw this film on the now defunct UPN network in 2002, it's frickin hilarious! I didn't know what it was about,then I learned it's based on the boardgame that was released in the '50s. There were talks of a remake to the film as far back as 2009, with Gore Verbinski director of POTC at the helm, with Ryan Reynolds playing the lead and the movie was going to be an Indiana Jones style adventure but production was cancelled. Then in 2017, Jason Bateman was going to star and direct the film but this was out on hold. Then in July 13, 2022, the writers of Deadpool will reunite with Ryan Reynolds to remake the project.

Absolute classic! This should be a must watch for anybody.

Although it wouldn’t have been possible, I would’ve enjoyed Green being the killer. As a fellow member of the “nice guy” label, it’s always fun to say or do something others consider shocking. Just to be clear, I don’t support murder, you don’t have to go that far.

Eileen Brennan (Mrs Peacock) was fantastic - if you get a chance Ollie, please do a reaction to PRIVATE BENJAMIN (1980) - it's got a great supporting cast... Goldie Hawn and Eileen Brennan are the leads. If you go back to 1972, I think you might enjoy WHAT'S UP, DOC? It stars Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand with Mrs White from Clue, Madeline Kahn. Both these titles are comedies, although Private Benjamin is more a dramedy in places. Fun fact for you... Did you know that Miss Scarlet, Lesley-Anne Warren, auditioned for the role of Lois Lane in Superman The Movie?

And Then There Were None (1945) Ten Little Indians (1965) are both based on the same Agatha Christie novel and are very good. I saw the first one as a kid and still think it's probably the best. Love a good manor murder mystery. Heck even Family Guy did a version, "And Then There Were Fewer". Really glad to hear you did Murder by Death, will definitely have to get that.

I think you missed the Mr green background joke, Tim curry looked at him funny when he said he was gay, this is because that's not the secret wadsworth had on the paper, yes it's a bad homophobe joke but it is supposed to be a homophobe joke, jokes will end hatred if people can realize they are jokes, but people just can't take jokes anymore so hatred will come back way stronger than in the past.

While watching your reaction I realized that the different endings work with it being a board game because there's a different killer every time you play it.

Modern politics suck and make people too sensitive. Example, Song Of The South, is a movie about mythology in Antebellum South shortly after slavery. Many attacked for political reasons at the time and continue to do so.

Such s great breakdown. I love this movie, but it has ruined me for normal conversations. Everytime somebody says "to make a long story short" I have to fight with myself not to say "Too late!"
