Thanks to ExpressVPN for the sponsorship; go to expressvpn.com/xiaomanyc and find out how you can get 3 months free! Today I went to NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown as a clueless white guy and ordered food in the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese. The other patrons in the restaurant were completely shocked!!!
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions - both the waiters and the other patrons in Sunset Park were totally shocked! Then we walked around in the Chinese New Year parade and chatted with vendors and other people in Fuzhounese and Mandarin; their reactions were hilarious as well!
Thanks everyone for supporting me on my language learning journey - part 2 of these Fuzhounese videos coming up very soon! And also Happy Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year!!!

BS. It’s only for certain languages. Try speaking English with a Hispanic or Arabic accent and you will get angry looks. Even more so if they’re a non-white person. Americans are generally pretty xenophobic to any foreign, non-European culture. Immigrants get attacked if they can’t speak English, but they also get made fun of even when they try to. It’s usually Conservative white Americans that do this. Go figure.

@@mountainbirder9872 I hear in big tourist areas it is more of the feeling of an annoying tourist when you mispronounce something, because in paris they get you know thousands of these people a year, but out in the countryside people tend to be happier about it because they don't get 10 people a day poorly speaking their language to them.

Karli Hibinger As a non-native Spanish speaker, I can tell you that this happens often to me. People just truly appreciate that someone outside of their culture has taken the time to learn about theirs, and in many cases, there are cultural understandings that can only be understood if you also know the language. So people automatically get the sense that you “know” them, and they appreciate it because it puts them at ease. I have NEVER, in 24 years of practicing my Spanish with native people, experienced anything other than their appreciation and support. I hope you get to experience it because it is REALLY fun!

A westerner learning Fuzhounese is a little like someone who looks very Chinese going into a backwoods Appalachian town and managing to speak a perfect Appalachian dialect. Anyone native to that part of the US would be floored that someone who grew up in another part of the world would be able to speak that dialect. It's because most people in China have a "home language" or "home dialect" depending on where they are in a province. They then most certainly learn Mandarin (The nation's language) and possibly Cantonese and/or English. The only people who would ever speak your "home language" are the people from that area who were born there, not even other Chinese natives would bother to speak it, so it's exceeding rare to ever expect someone from another part of the world to speak that language.

It's not only that. If you would close your eyes, especially when he speaks mandarin, you could have mistaken him easily for a chinese person. Now in the US there are plenty of asian people who speak english with an american accent. But in China there are almost none immigrants that can speak fluent with a chinese native accent. I guess that is what makes it unique.

They're jsut surprised some remote village's backwards population accepted to speak to a white guy long enough for him to learn a lick of it. Because they don't realize in their insulated valley girl accents what a "remote chinese dialect" would even sound like in its natural form, since the chinese government has effectiely weeded it out, like weeding out southern English for being "vocal blackface" or some crap like that, too "offensive" to show on TV to honest Han chinese.

There's also that Indian Chef on the TV that has the thickest Scottish accent I have ever heard. Its something about the Scottish accent, unless it's coming out of a 22 stone, white man with a red beard, it seems weird. Look up 'Tony Singh' on RU-vid and you will see what I mean about the voice. So I can understand the shock of some of these people when they hear a white person speak like them.

donkmeister more like speaking in Scottish accent or scots (not scots gaellic). The reason being that Fuzhonese and the other Chinese variants must be more closely related than Welsh ( a P celtic language) and English (a west Germanic language where 74% of the word base isn’t even Germanic in origin). Because on some level, we know that this is how we stop wars from happening. We realise the only shit that divides us is incredibly superficial (i.e. language), and that we are all just human, after all.

I don't know a single white person among all my family, friends, co-workers, or associates that are bilingual, except maybe some Spanish. I've met a handful of Asians that can speak multiple languages. I've met a lotta Spanish children that can speak bilingual. Granted that has a lot to do with my location, but yeah, It's real. People that don't normally travel or not raised in foreign family have no demand to be bilingual, let alone multi-lingual.
