Mel, where have you been all my life! There's nothing more I love than making my own stuff, and because of you I'm about to make my own washes and now clump foliage. Patron coming your way sir, keep the awesome tutorials coming , you are helping a lot of people!

stuartwalters96 That's awesome on all counts but hold off on the clump foliage till I finish the series mate ;-)

Yet another informative video. I think that the composite foam had some pieces that were not completely saturated because it's made up of different density foam chips to begin with.

Oliver-Dean Bailey Cheers mate, I think you're right but wet blending should resolve that :-)

The paint does not need to go all the way through to the inside of the foam - nobody ever going to see that. However, that it resulted in you experimenting with other types of foam is brilliant and useful information for other crafters! Thank you so much!!!

if you add some dish washing liquid or isopropyl alchahol to the water it will eliminate the problem of the paint not penetrating into the foam

Care to show us how you chop it up? Do you add water? What blender setting? How long do you blend it? Also, I mentioned on the Terrainiacs page but I'll post it here: What about soaking with water and then freezing the foam before chopping?
@TheTerrainTutor

Bill D. in Iowa I'll be covering that in the tutorial once I've done experimenting, don't worry, I got your back matey! Paint and ice does not go well together mate, also I don't think my blender could take it.

Maybe adding some surfactant to the paint would break water tension and aid foam saturation? Im assuming emulsion doesn't have surfactant in it to start with.
@TheTerrainTutor

stingray4567 That's an interesting idea, it's now on the list mate :-)

Would sponge not work better? It has a greater variety of airbubbles, I'd think. I've seen airbrush projects which use kitchen sponges to create cloudy colors.

A very honest comparison showing all effects, the pros and cons. I like that and that's why I like your videos. :) That really helps a hobbyist making clump foliage.

Have you thought on adding glycerine to the liquid mix to have that rubbery feeling that the Woodland Scenic clump foliage has?
@TheTerrainTutor

Francois Leclerc No, but I'll add it to the list of things to try mate

Try using a vacuum pump on the composite foam.

Have you tried to draw the colour through the mix using a squeezed moist foam as the starting point?

What about fabric dye? As in dye the foam panel first then use the blender?
@TheTerrainTutor
@TheTerrainTutor 7 лет назад
Tried dyes, doesn't work as the paint also acts as a binder mate

Trees aren't always all green nor are they just one shade. Areas that have a hint of yellow would mean it's either starting to be fall, or those branches have died.

This clumpy stuff would never pass as even remotely natural. The Terrain Tutor needs to do his damned homework before creating videos for fun and profit on RU-vid.
