This is badass!!! I was about to do this two months ago but I saw on IH8MUD and some RU-vid comments about over greasing because of the pressure on the drives haft and just dealt with it. I'll just be careful like you and possibly try this out next month. Awesome video dude!
Thank you! Yeah let it move back and forth about 10x and you should be good. Ran over some curbs after greasing to “flex” it a bit lol. Still driving smooth 👍
awesome video. just finished greasing my Hilux u joins and slide yokes. just use a nlgi 2 high-temperature grease (not molybdenum di sulfide because i don't have an extra grease gun) u joins are easy and just 3 to 4 pumps pushed out the old grease. when start pumping in slide yoke, took me 12 to 15 pumps to see the grease coming out from the slide yoke. clean the excess, drive around town, crawl underneath and checked, saw grease pushed out of slide yoke. cleaned the excess. after 2 days, same happened, cleaned the excess. third day all good, no excess grease coming out. no clanking.
Got to tell serv advisor and oil changer every time, then confirm with mechanic to do what service advisor omitted in work order. This way, IF lucky its done every other oil change. One Toyota dealer complained they had to buy a fresh grease gun because of my annoying reminders to hold them accountable.
That Cruiser is a beauty. You and many other’s on RU-vid are hopefully showing more people who are on the fence about doing their own general maintenance can have more confidence in doing such. Good for you in taking the initiative.
My HDJ81 seems overserviced as it’s been slinging a lot of grease from the slip yoke. No clunking, just slinging grease. I will for sure be careful not to overserviced and create a mess.
Thank you for making this video - I have two 4Runners and need to do the exact same greasing procedure. I choose the same grease gun as you but decided to use Amsoil Synthetic Polymeric Off-Road Grease, NLGI #2 has it has a bit more Moly in it at 5%.
Just took my 07 4Runner in for an oil change and asked about getting this done since I've been having the clunk. The service tech told me they would have to diagnose the problem for $160/hour first. I told him I knew what the problem is and it just needs grease. He told me he's never heard of this and that the grease is supposed to last the life of the vehicle. I then asked why it has a port for adding grease if that was true. Anyway, guess I'll be doing this myself. I hate dealerships!
Thanks for the video. It is super helpful for me. Until a short time ago, I didn't know what the clunk was and thought possibly it was bad motor mounts. And cool for you and your little girl. She's going to grow up teaching the guys how to take care of their cars. 🙂
Bought a 2001 with 110,000 mi from original owner Oct 2021 super clean super sweet. Driven from so cal to Montana to Florida, running perfectly so far, heading back to Montana in a couple of days, love this rig.
I lubricated the shaft where you pointed with the arrow, it did not go back, oil came out from the front of the shaft. There is a gap where you pointed with the arrow, it is making noise. How should I proceed?
🤔 sounds like maybe you over greased? If it’s not able to flex it can be damaging and may be the result of the noise. You can remove the zerk to allow the grease to flow out to relieve the pressure. Warning this will be messy . If you’re not comfortable with doing this take it to a shop.
@@rywanders I did the lube and pumped 20 times per slip joint and got no clunk relief, and no grease coming out of the slip yoke. Wondering if that thing was dry or if I'missing something. Aost like the slip yoke is frozen.....Planning to add more grease .....thx again for the vid.
@@frederickmatthews4259 Try taking it over some bumpy terrain to get it to extend and compress to see if any grease comes out the seal. When adding watch for it to move back and forth a few times. If it doesn't work you may have to change it out.
Also, my GX is lifted with no running boards, so I'm thinking I will just slide under there and do this while it is on the ground so I don't have to worry about over filling while it is in the air.
This is nice to know, it's just greasing is all. i figured it was just play in the gearsets and drivelines taking up was all. I'll be doing taking care of this saturday along with the oil change it needs!
Plesae KILL the music if you are talking...can not understand you for the loud music. Thanks This video applies to Highlander, too. Thanks for posting.
My gx470 had this issue I greased it and reduced the clicking feeling, it comes back from time to time, should I just keep greasing it so it can go away 100% ?
Very informative! Im brand new in the j80 game, i do work at truck repair shop, and could have car just drive on four ramps for greasing, that will give enough space, so theoretically i could fully grease the slip joint? And i wonder if semi truck grease is good enough, i mean it should be considering their weight haha
Late to the party but i've heard it both ways. Some say you can't over grease u joints and to pump until you see fresh grease coming out of the seals while others say 1-2 pumps until you see just a little bit come out because over greasing can cause pre mature failure.. Any youtube professionals have the correct answer?
Just purchased my first 100 series. Just sold my sequoia. All of the 100 series I have ever been in have a clunk to them so I thought it was just a normal thing. Trying this out on mine tonight and hopefully that clunk will go away. #900Subscriber!
Sometimes taking off from a stop and sitting still while switching into gear. I noticed a slight thud recently and plan to change out my front diff bushings here soon hopefully that will fix it.
I just did it yesterday without jacking it up. I grease the slip joint with Valvoline moly (gray) grease and use the Valvoline multi (red) for u-joints. I use an electric grease gun. So much easier and faster. I may have overdid it on the slip joint so I'm about to test drive to the gas station right now. Thanks for the video!@@rywanders
@@seahawksforever9504 ah electric grease gun sounds genius! Yeah go over some bumps and get that to push out the extra grease then wipe up the mess. Nice work!
stupid question, you don't need to jack the car up to do this right? If that's the case I would think if it moves a little I should be good and stop pumping.
if you can get under, you do not need to jack up. you will find, you cannot access all zerks. grease what you can and move the vehicle forward a bit to access others, then grease them.
@7:43, when you put it into reverse i can still hear a clunk. are you saying it has quiet down the clunk? After i greased the front and rear diffs, i have noticed the clunk went away when putting into drive, but the reverse clunk has quiet down a bit.
@@rywanders just watched your front diff bushing and it looks painful. I just got done doing my rack and pinion bushings and that was a pain too. I’ll save that job for another time. :)
@@cpenv it was! i really needed some ramps to lift the vehicle off the ground more. Still would have been tough but probably would have helped greatly.
I have an 06 Land Cruiser (100 series). I get the "clunk" when I'm driving and let off the accelerator, wait a few seconds then push the accelerator again. Is that likely the same thing? Some have said a bad bearing in the drive line (that is under load when the motor/trans are engages (not coasting). It is definitely in the rear of the truck.
@@4runner1grfe I understand.... But the clunk is in the back, near the differential. And it is directly lated to pushing the accelerator pedal... Meaning, on a straight flat smooth road if I let off and then push the pedal again.... Clunk So it seems to be when the drive shaft is under load or not under load . Thanks for the input though.
Great video. I do wish you would have included examples of the clunk at the beginning of the video. I'm trying to diagnose a clinic myself, and am not sure if it is the u joint clunk or something else. I'm just going to go ahead and do this and see if the noise goes away.
Hey Christopher, thanks for the feedback! Yeah it doesn’t hurt to do this either way. Hopefully it works for you. I would lift it off the ground if you can; doing it under pressure might not work well and you won’t be able to rotate to access the zerks. Let me know how it goes.
