Kinda confused on a couple of things.. When you replaced your rear main seal it appeared that it involved removing an entire metallic type housing with the actual seal in the middle. I have a 2000 2.5L I4 (5 speed of course, the common Mazda M50D-R1) and every "rear main seal" I can find for mine just appears to be a circular piece that looks similar to a large wheel bearing seal. I can't even find the part you replaced on the internet, and it isn't in the "Buy Parts For This Repair Here" link. I would think mine is just different but I can't even find that part that you replaced. It looks like the rear main seals I've found just replace the circular part in the middle of the metallic assembly you removed. After quite a bit of digging I was able to find the part I think you used (BS40689) and it does not list 2000 Ranger as compatible, so I'm guessing it must be due to my 2.5L engine. None of the sites list that part as compatible with my Ranger.. so I'm just gonna buy the round one and hope mine looks a bit different once I dig into it! Also, the constant correcting yourself when you mis-spoke is a bit annoying after the 100th time or so. It makes it pretty darn confusing for people who aren't completely familiar with all of these parts, and people who are completely familiar with all of these parts really don't need tutorial videos anyway. You obviously edited quite a bit since we didn't need to see every bolt being removed and an eight hour video, so I'm curious why you didn't edit some of that stuff out. Just some constructive critisizm. You're still getting a thumbs up from me for all of the help, and taking the time to try to show others how to do such an involved job. Thank you!

I'm only 20 minutes into the video but I had to come say how cool it is that he's explaining everything so detailed like the issues and shit. Only thing differently I'd say is don't edit those parts out cuz lord knows with an 87 I'm probably going to have some issues. Lol but ya good job gettin er done and I agree with everyone else if she's doubting you instead of encouraging you that's a red flag bruh

Thank you so very much for this video. Because you did this video I was able to fix my truck. Thanks so much. Its people like you that make youtube great. I had shifting problems tried to go the easy way and replaced my master cylinder and had the same problems. Then I figured I had to change the slave, thanks to you I was able to take the tranny out I looked at the clutch and it seemed waisted. I was able to change my rear main seal, my pilot bering my slave cylinder and my clutch and I really don't know if I could have done it with out this video. Also the bread thing worked, I ended up stuffing a 10mm with bread which was a little smaller than the inside of the pilot bering worked great. I felt pride as I driove my truck away working, thank you.

Something happened to my first reply. So I'm doing it again .I'm a retired mechanic ( 48 yrs.) and I love seeing things like this,brings back great memories of skinned knuckels. I was able to get hold of the dealer that did the work and they were able to bring up the work order and it showed the conventional clutch was installed.I'm 70 now and still can't get enough of this stuff' gets in your blood. Ranger still runs great (189458 miles).Thanks again!!!

The key to those upper bell housing bolts is to lower the back end of transmission and get ~3 ft of extension and go from behind the transmission. You can see the bolts once its tipped down and easy to reach with the very long extension. Piece of cake!

The bread trick is absolute genius! I used a 6" piece of 1/2" round steel with one end tightly wrapped with electrical tape built up to create a snug fit inside the pilot bearing. Worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this, I'm replacing transmission, rear main seal, clutch & flywheel on a 2002 Ranger 2.3 👍

I know how much work goes into making a detailed 'how-to' video because I've thought about doing it myself with my 2005 Courier, but got impatient and only showed short before and after videos ... I'm doing a plug and lead replacement on a Mitsubishi Challenger tomorrow. I know of only one other video covering that on YT, so might record that. Maybe... The job involves removing the intake manifold...just to replace a set of plugs and leads.

Those Mazda B-Series are NOT the same thing as a Ford Ranger. Your 1992 is Mazda's own truck that they used to import, but they partnered with Ford and created a Ranger copy starting model year 1994 according to the Haynes Repair Manual I have. I'm gonna be doing this to my 1995 Mazda B2300 5-Spd Regular Cab. Release bearing went out and won't shift into a gear, and once it's in gear, it WILL CONTINUE to stay in gear no matter how hard you press down on the clutch. We replaced the master cylinder and bled/burped the hydraulic system 6 months ago. Might as well replace the slave cylinder since it's in the same bell housing, which is such a dumb design.

Thank you for providing such an informative video. It has been an invaluable resource for information. I happened to buy the same Duralast Clutch Kit & Slave Cylinder as you did from AutoZone. Might as well change the Slave Cylinder since there is no other way to get to it. My truck is a 1995 Mazda B2300 SE Regular Cab 2WD model. 196,346 Miles on it. Odometer stopped in 2010/2011. I estimate the truck to have 205K or 210K miles. Clutch pilot bearing failed and completely ruined while driving around town. Truck wouldn't go into gear when running, and if it was already in gear, it would stay in gear and no matter how hard you pressed the clutch petal, it had no effect on disengaging or engaging the clutch plate, like a dummy petal on an automatic car. Clutch is in good shape considering the mileage and flywheel is in even better shape. Going to replace clutch anyway.

For a transmission jack, we drove (or pushed) the car up on ramps (Today's plastic ramps aren't nearly as tall or strong) laid on our backs on the grass and used our hands and our knees for removing manual transmissions on '66 mustangs, '69 Torino's, camaro's and later on an '84 F150, I din't even use ramps. Just crawled under it in the driveway and did it. Manual transmissions are heavy but aren't nearly as heavy as an automatic. Of course, it helps if you are reasonably strong, in shape and used to dealing with weights. In the 70's, most of us were. Now, at 60, I may still be up for it on a ranger 5 speed transmission. That's the plan, anyway. I May try your improvised jack if I don't feel froggy enough when that day gets here. Thanks for the video.

First check your transmission fluid level. If that pans out correct, I would then check your master cylinder clutch fluid in the reservoir. If all that pans out, it could be your master cylinder,slave cylinder or clutch springs could be bad. If you have a broken spring on the clutch, the shifter when the vehicle is running will be stiff as a board and will barely move. If you turn the vehicle off and it goes into gear with little effort, you have a broken spring on the clutch or the clutch is cracked in some way.

Whoops, I forgot to ask, why did you remove the starter motor if it doesn't connect to tke bell housing? I watched so many videos on this subject, yours is the best.

looks like you have lots of comments, but I figure I'll give it a shot... First off, epic video! It's about to save me tons of money. I'm super appreciative you put this together. So my main question is about the slave cylinder. Should I replace it while I'm in there, or would it be just fine to put on the new Throwout/Release bearing that comes with the clutch kit??

This is just what I need. An excellent video with superb instructions. I have ( here ) a Hyundai 4x4 with a transfer case ( it has a chain inside it) but after watching you, I am willing to have a go!. I´ll have to find a tran jack though. Well done.

When replacing that trans fluid mine took around 3 quarts. The first 2+ I just dumped in and then I started watching for drips well into that 3rd quart. Some have questioned the ATF but that is the correct fluid. On other vehicles I own the trans takes engine oil. Not everything takes gear oil and putting the wrong fluid in is not going to end well. For a 4wd it is often easier to remove the transfer case first. It is not many bolts and then you don't have as much length or mass or offset mass to deal with. The transfer case will want to twist the transmission on the jack if left attached and it makes re-installation more difficult as well.

Is the slave cylinder specific to a self adjusting or standard clutch? What I mean is if you start with a self adjusting clutch and change to a non adjusting, do you have to change the slave cylinder to a non adjusting slave cylinder. Or will the slave work on either clutch? Great video thanks
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 10 лет назад
No, the slave cylinder is a standard part number and is universal..the self adjusting clutch should adjust itself to the salve.The slave I had originally was the same as the new slave and it was used with the original self adjusting clutch in the vehicle.

Hey very thorough and helpful video. Not only is it difficult to work on a vehicle, but also filming and narrating is a lot extra! I have one question: did you use brake cleaner to clean out the inside of your transmission when you resealed the transmission case hat? Thank you for your voluntary time and effort!
@Nthefastlane
@Nthefastlane 4 года назад
Thank you. Yes, most people don't understand what it takes to film a repair. On one of my repair videos I was doing a strut assembly, it took 3-4 hours to film the repair on the passenger side, when I turned the cameras off and did the driver side, it took me less than 25 minutes to complete the repair. I can't remember off the top of my head if I used brake cleaner, but it definitely wouldn't hurt if you needed to clean up some parts up.

This is really great, man! I'm about to change the slipping clutch on my '04 Ford Escape, hopefully this weekend. I don't plan to do as thorough a job as you did here, due to the time constraint I have. It's about 112000 miles on it. Am i being optimistic to just finish changing the clutch in a whole day, starting early? It'll help you have any advice at all, since this is my first time doing it (I have a friend helping, more experience, but first time doing clutch work). :)

The line to the slave cylinder come out of the Master cylinder and yes, it disconnects from both, I doubt it's the line, it's either the Master or the Slave, check for any kind out brake fluid maybe dripping down the transmission where it meets the engine,that would indicate a bad slave. Also check the clutch pedal and follow the shaft to the master cylinder..if you see any kind of grease or brake fluid it's on it's way out.I have a video on how to bleed the air out of a master cylinder.
