I've been watching for the past 18months, when I finally decided i needed to drive to get to uni. I'm 33 and I've avoided getting a licence for all these years, suffering terribly with anxiety. Covid put a spanner in the works and despite countless cancelled tests, my anxiety and two mean driving instructors, last Tuesday I finally took my practical driving test. And guess what ...I passed! First time. And I did it in my own old 2004 petrol manual fiesta.I can't thank you enough. these videos have helped so much and I really don't think I would have achieved a pass without your input.

Once you become experienced, you’ll be able to relegate shifting to mostly instinct. Meaning that you will basically automatically shift down as you slow down without having to think about it. Only in situations where something either captures your full attention or requires your shifting hand to do something very quickly, will this ‘automatic’ shifting fail. For example, if you are doing an emergency stop, your full attention is on stopping and you very likely won’t be able to shift down as you come to a stop. Or if at the moment of shifting something appears in front of your car and you have to swerve suddenly, that very likely will lead you to miss shifting down.

Hi , been following you for almost 2 years now and by far you are the best driving instructor on RU-vid and much better than the driving schools I had to learn from . I can drive and do most parking and reversing well but I live on a street that is downhill and our driveway is downhill. It's quite scary reversing the car as I must hold the biting point and give quite a lot of gas , about almost 3000rpm . I have no problems with hill starts , my only problem is hill reversing . For some reason it's scary for me to reverse up our driveway , my dad does it quite easily though in manual and automatic cars . Do you have any tips for me or maybe you could make a video . Also in all of your videos for parking where reversing is involved you never show a camera view of your leg movements on the paddles . Is this because reversing is just like first gear so it's obvious?
@DarkHoodness
@DarkHoodness 3 года назад
Yeah I have a similar problem - Reversing uphill needs high RPM for the car to not stall, but isn't good for the clutch if you like to do it slowly. Perhaps you're supposed to go as fast as the car will allow with the clutch up, keeping your RPM high enough for the car to not stall, and use your momentum to make it easier for the car instead of varying the clutch at a lower speed and having it constantly half-pressed with the biting point, but reversing at anything above 3 MPH isn't something I'm comfortable with doing yet... It may be a confidence and experience thing.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
You need to be slower when reversing so it's much harder on the clutch. Best to reverse downhill and drive forwards up hill on your driveway.
@DarkHoodness
@DarkHoodness 3 года назад
@@ConquerDriving A scenario which worries me is what to do if I'm facing downhill on a single track country road, and I meet an oncoming car, or lorry, or vehicle which cannot reverse as easily as I can - If I need to reverse back uphill to get to the nearest passing place, I wouldn't know how to do that without overworking the clutch.
@lenabazan5764
@lenabazan5764 3 года назад
I hope you can consider making a video on reversing uphill on your future videos for learners like me to get a tip from how well it can be done..and yes..if you can show a camera view of your leg movements on the pedals..as that will help us more.. thank you & GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS..

This channel is truly an invaluable resource! I'm so grateful! Such a great teacher, and it's really helpful to have the consistency with teaching style when I come back here with another question. I second this question about reversing uphill!!! I found myself in a tough position just yesterday, parked on a downhill and when I came back to my car someone had parked very close in front of me. I was really nervous about rolling forward into them when reversing. Luckily they drove off while I was psyching myself up haha I did the maneuver anyway to practice as if the car was still there, and it went fine. But, it's really helpful to have your instructions in mind when I'm in a situation where I have to think harder than usual due to pressure/nerves.

Everyone in the comment section can 100% hate me for this. But i actually quit driving manual. After several hours, and 2 clutch burns, i understood that manual driving isnt for everyone. Personally, it is completely fun to drive manual, and it looks really fun aswell, but i have to admit that i am more of an electric type of driver, aka automatic. I still enjoy watching your videoes and find your videoes really interesting, but this is genuinly too hard for me. I can achieve alot of things if i just work for it, but there is this one little thing that wont get to my legs as i am driving. I am still proud for trying and all the times i have failed etc. Good driving and peace!

I'm currently learning, there is this bridge that ends up with a light signal. Thing is, it is straight at the end of it, meaning you have to keep your speed controlled when you come to it. So I would brake slightly to balance the increase given by the slope then only use the clutch to shift down, then I gradually brake until I'm at the signals. Otherwise I'd be too fast at the junction and it'd be dangerous. And I usually get my foot off the clutch when I have to turn, in fact you shift down before that. But I still find myself comfortable going clutch down when I get to roundabouts because I feel more control over the braking/shifting/lifting up the foot again. It was also suggested by my instructor

Turning Left into a side road or Turning Left into another main road Any turning left would only have to let you wait in queue waiting for a clear path safely to turn left But you may have to wait for Traffic light signal Or may be wait at STOP SIGNAL OR WAIT at single horizontal line on the road surface Waist till find safe opportunity to make action Or wait at double horizontal light on the road surface before turning left . These are essential driving discipline every drivers learn to drive safely at all lessons . Turning right is a very different story ; Only at. Road where divider as lines or traffic signal with square box in road surface with cross inside box , that box may be in the cross road middle part Or square box may be found exactly on road surface at the or before turning right Before divider It means if you are on the right fast lane you can enter the cross❌box and enter a free space there keeping front of car slightly turn on right It means you can turn right once opposite side vehicles are stopped at traffic light red, Wait for a safe opportunity. If the road has divider and follow the same warning before safe opportunity to turn right into right side road but keeping to your left lane . Even in case where U TURN is allowed. Then follow the same warning before turning u-turn

Thanks for yet another great video! I've been wondering, though, my dad tells me to put the car on neutral before reaching the junction, and then choose the appropriate gear based upon estimation whether I need a second or a first gear. Thing is, it makes me kinda confused because it adds up to the amount of steps and decisions I should make, so I find it better to keep the clutch up, but also keeping it up sometimes makes me go through junctions way too quickly, and the car feels like it's about to flip on its side because I'm taking a turn while it's not that slow. This thing still confuses me, I think I'd need more videos on it. Would you please upload a video of you driving on a casual road, for like 15 minutes, with a POV of the puddles and all? It's be like a conclusion of all of your videos being applied.

Failed my test today . Examiner comes to vehicle 3-4 minutes earlier and I was at washroom that time. My instructor told it's allowed to be inside test center 5 minutes before only. We are on time and I was optimistic to be back in time . So when I came back examiner is kind of waiting for me. Then he checked all documents and asked me to start the car. I was driving on a Honda jazz with a push start button . I was not aware that the key should be Inside the car to get it work in that way . Sadly this time my instructor kept the key inside his pocket as he was doing the sanitisation of car when the examiner approached and asked my name and when I came back from washroom my instructor missed to hand over key to me. Short story car not starting and I don't know what is wrong and finally I requested examiner can I call my trainer. He was bit hesitated and agreed with a kind of expression that I can't explain. The examiner was very rude and never uttered a word to me. Then the test started I was very nervous by this time and first he requested me to do a reverse bay parking inside test center. I completed that correctly and then we went to the most difficult route and 70 percent time I was driving through narrow roads with parked cars on left side. I did only one round about in entire test. I was requested to do an emergency stop and couple of occasions pull left and emerge . My test lasted for 45 minutes and finally result was I Failed Reason is Judgement meeting . Your serious faults Judgement - Meeting Your driving faults Progress - Undue hesitation, 3 Control - Steering, 2 Junctions - Observation, 2 Judgement - Crossing, 1 Control - Parking brake, 1 Junctions - Approach speed, 1 Use of mirrors - Change speed, 1 Progress - Appropriate speed, 1 Examiner explained like I was moving slightly to the other side of the road when meeting traffic coming from ahead on roads with parked cars on left. As a result cars coming from other side slowed down for me couple of occasions. He was saying either I should wait or should keep more close to the parked cars on left slowly while moving ahead, so cars from opposite side can also drive through. After end of the test myself and instructor covered the same route and my instructor was amazed to see the roads that I took during the very last part of the test. It is such a narrow road inside a residential street and my instructor told no one in past took this route as far as he knows. Do you have any thoughts on this result? Does my initial impression caused this to me ? Expecting a response
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
I'm sorry to hear you failed. Examiners have a very repetitive job, driving the same routes, saying the same scripts for years. I take my hat off to the ones who manage to stay cheerful with a good sense of humour. If they appear grumpy, it's nothing personal, it's just another day at work for them. The examiners have set routes that they'll take you on but they can change them a bit when needed due to traffic. Sounds like the examiner wasn't too happy with your position either on one occasion badly or several occasions in a minor way. Keep practising, sounds like you'll get it next time. Unlucky about the key by the way, totally not your fault and a bad way to start your test as it will affect your frame of mind.

Richard i hope you see this, i really love your videos. I will be giving my test in my own car and it's a bit heavy diesel car. When i get to a decently open junction, i can't do it in gear 1 as it would be too slow, and can't do it in gear 2 as it goes a bit too fast for my liking and if I slow it down without clutch it will get jerky. The best way is to keep in second gear and press the clutch a bit, not fully down, once the car is straight i can easily gain control back, will i be marked down for doing that ?

Great advice as usual. I follow all your videos and my driving skill and confisence have improved a lot! I just have one question. Here in India we have extremely busy junctions where traffic rules are mostly thrown out of the window. So one needs to be prepared for stopping at a split second notice. Could you please suggest something for junctions like these? Would holding the clutch at biting point and feathering up and down as required to adjust the speed (with the right foot ready to brake) be better than leaving the clutch all the way up for such situations? Kindly reply. Thanks!
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 2 года назад
I've not driven on Indian roads but keeping the clutch at the bite point will wear it more quickly. It's better to practise and with some time you will be quicker at using the gas and finding the bite point.

I teach mine to be on the clutch when they think they'd need to stop, but if they are sure they can go through without stopping, I would prefer them to simply be in gear (less things to think about). I would add that most junctions would require 2nd or 3rd gear tops (in town). I am quite serious about using 1st gear only if dead slow or stationary, to start moving.

I really struggle with junctions and your videos have helped me so much but how would edge forward at a junction like for example if you were approaching a junction and then stopped but couldn’t see clearly enough around the bend, what would you do with the pedals to keep edging forward slightly until you can see ?( if that makes any sense)

I've just watched one of your other videos and gave it total praise as it made perfect sense. I get some of what your saying here, but when you have to go very slow with the real chance of braking at any time, I don't really understand why you're so against being on the clutch with your foot over the break. In my mind that is safer than foot on accelerater hovering over the clutch, as there will be a slight delay in moving your feet to brake. Can you explain please?
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
You need the clutch up to so have power to continue, you don't want the car to slow down or even roll back as you turn across the path of traffic. It's also smoother to lift the clutch as you're slowing down on approach to the junction instead of when you need to accelerate.

I am learning and I had no idea that the gears would keep you within their range, for some reason I just figured the car would slow down below the lowest speed and then stall, so I was trying to match my speed to my gear rather than my gear to my speed if that makes sense :). Cheers

My second gear is around 8-15. I've always had a fear that my instructor would think I am coasting when infact I'm just avoiding the car to shake due to low speeds at Gear 2. What I do is when turning only in tight bends I put my clutch down and keep going then rev match to keep it in gear 2 (all this in gear 2). My car wont allow me to shift to gear 1 unless under 3 mph so thats what I gotta do.
@ConquerDriving
@ConquerDriving 3 года назад
You need to clutch down when you are too slow for 2nd, this is not coasting. Some cars do have a particularly high minimum speed in second gear but only usually on cold start. I guess yours is normally 9-10mph.

Thanks mate ,been learning car for a week and your videos help a lot By the way i am from a hilly state of india so had to drive in hills for the most part so should i prefer the clutch brake combination method or handbrake method to get the car rolling from rest ? I personally felt clutch +brake combination method easier but according to dad it can cause wear and tear to clutch
@ConquerDriving

The trouble with the clutch and foot brake method is that it doesn't work in all cars. The handbrake method is more reliable.

Another quality video. Btw I've an question ❓ I use to drive my car without gas, I mean with clutch only. And it works fine except some stalls at hilly areas which is expected as it's got 800cc engine. But my brother uses 4000ish rpm whenever he starts it from standstill or at gear changes and he laughs at my stalls and he almost never stalls but I think he's burning clutch. Please answer me in detail if you can so I can understand this matter more clearly & prove my point too😁
@MrRobbi373
@MrRobbi373 3 года назад
I can tell you from my experience that about 2000, maybe at most 2500 rpm with your small engine are really good for not stalling and quick starts in traffic. With 4000 you will definitely burn your clutch (I did that a couple of times, I bet your brother knows the smell lol). But not giving any gas is usually way too slow in cities etc. Even with my 1.2L the engine stalls without any gas on slight hills.

@@ConquerDriving This video definitely helped me & know I understand that some gas is necessary before lifting the clutch up. But my brother's way of adding it too much and sometimes the car never goes back or front, I mean car doesn't go anywhere even with him pressing too hard on gas and noise can be heard in cabin too. Is that right?
@abhik1059
@abhik1059 3 года назад
Basically he never use handbrake & he uses bite point and gas combination to avoid rolling it back on hilly areas. I feel it'll burn the clutch prematurely but he says that clutches work for a very long time even with his kind of driving technique.
