Your compositions are amazing! Hope to be able to take some shots like that. Moving on to the review the cmf is quite capable and I am happy that Nothing released a phone that is affordable for more people and is quite unique as well.

Tbh it says better than i thought. Budget phones, with which I do have experience, are great in good light but fall apart in lower light like sunset or taking photos of a group of friends in slightly dimmer environments. I have an Xperia 10iii and it's crap in anything other than optimal light. In great light it's fantastic. I have some really nice sunny photos but as soon as the sun approaches the horizon even just a little, it falls to pieces. After using these budget phones for a few years now I've decided to get an iPhone, not new because that's WAY out of budget, but i think I'll manage to get an iPhone 12 or 13 used, once the 16 is announced. Hopefully those cameras will be flagship level and see me through the next 3 years or more.

yeah verrrryyyy true!!! And that is the bigger issue indeed, in hard situations they will struggle, as well as natural depth. but overall for the price I think it's fine. For 200 dollars you can't complain too much about the result you're getting from a phone like this.

Great review as allways! My only reccomendation would be to add few pictures of people in different conditions because many phones that check the other boxes fail with skin color accuracy which would be deal breaker for many people. I would like to see some more budget/midrange phone reviews and how they compare to each other.

@@ThroughJermainesLens that'll be incredible. I love your videos because you fill a gap between tech RU-vidrs and photography youtubers. Tech RU-vidrs typically do the minimum camera testing eg: stick it in auto and show a photo of a fake ikea plant on desk, photo of a car outside, photo of a pet and that's basically it. Photography youtubers tend to point out small sensor limitations compared to dedicated cameras to validate their life decisions 😂. You on the other hand provide a wealth of information while showing what's achievable with a smartphone, a keen eye, and some editing. All packaged into a well put together video. Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I don't think the phone's camera is good even for the price because it CAN produce nice shots but it processes everything to absurd levels. When the phone hits it can create some pretty nice shots and if you told me this was a 400 dollar+ phone I'd have agreed. Like at 2:51, that's such a nice shot, Nothing has the global properties right I think the exposure is right in that scene. Other times they try to boost the ISO too much and have either aggressive noise reduction or just leave the noise looking very ugly, for example the 3:53 shot. Videos as well, it CAN be nice but it just falls apart due to terribly high exposure imo. At night the situation is the same, sometimes they hit most of the times they don't, 8:15 onwards some shots look like a 500-600 dollar phone's outputs (maybe even the S24 Ultra's too lol) then look at 9:22, idk if youtube compressed all the noise or anything but the video looks exceptional for the price. Nice exposure, acceptable detail and little amounts of noise/it's not ugly. I think Nothing should partner with Vivo or something or create a separate ISP that they can use on their phones. The X100 looks really great even tho it has "only" a 1/1.49" sensor. If they can't do that then they should try to NOT go for the high exposure at all costs look. It's not safe/ it might please some of the average consumer only like 5% of the times but the rest of the times it's gonna be a miss. They should try to just keep it realistic and do some Sony level of light processing. Besides, people have the option of Gcam. Budget phones usually have some of the best gcam ports so I'm sure people will go nuts on this. A very competent phone though I wonder if the shots look good cus of the phone, the locations you go to or because of your framing skills? Anyways, this phone is nearly as good as the A35, for less. That's a competent product tho an ugly one lol Nice video though my friend, it's good that you're reviewing these budget phones too, though I wonder who it's for if they don't have proper availability. European and American people usually don't have any issues buying more expensive devices. It's mostly South American, Asian (like India or something) and African people that require these products, I hope they can sell the phone to those areas. Selling in the US and Europe will make them more popular but it won't result in any sales if they don't promote their stuff to actual audiences like in the countries I mentioned or make the phone available there.
@ThroughJermainesLens
@ThroughJermainesLens Месяц назад
I think for the price it is fine, BUT like you said and me in the video, in tends to overprocess, and a lot during the night where you get that contrast that is way too much, but even more so the sharpening, and there is a lot of noise reduction going on next to it, and that can truly effect the shot. The shots at the train station looks really solid. But then I have some others like the flower shot in low light where I am like: TF happened here!! And this is also why i mention that oneplus 10 pro I found for 225, that will just beat this phone to the ground when it comes to the camera in so many ways. in daytime, the images can look lifeless is the best way to describe it, like I mentioned at that smaller waterfall, it just lack characther, but... you know 200 dollars.. In golden hour with good light I think this phone can produce images that look very solid, without overprocessing, but less then ideal lighting, images can come out noisy, and the crop can be terrible if again the situation isn't ideal. But again... 200 dollars xD I feel like for that price it does fine, but nothing world crazy, and not the best you can clearly get for that price because a phone like that oneplus 10 pro, or maybe if you can find some other old flagships from 2 years ago for a good price will do much better then this. If you however have a LIMIT of 200 dollars and it MUST be a new phone for you, then I can understand buying this. But if you can spend a bit more... look at older flagships, always the best tip I can give! And for the shots looking good, realisticly... a lot of down to framing the shot, with this phone it matters more. Even more so because the DOF is very limited, so feels like it is using a pretty small sensor. But unsure, just lacks that. And thank you for your great analogy! Love it! And love reading these things! And I do think they are right now more doing like a "test" run or something from what I have heard with limited units.

@@ThroughJermainesLens I say it's not fine due to the competition. Xiaomi has a Redmi Note 13 with a 108 MP cam (1/1.67") and a slightly more expensive Note 13 Pro with a 200 MP cam (1/1.4") and Samsung has the A35 with a similarly sized main cam (afaik both are 1/2") and it also has a UW cam (tho it's a useless 8 MP one). Those phones take more consistent photos and even have better sensors. So I think this phone is disappointing in that sense. The bezels are thick and the design is ugly to me so those 2 pros from the Phone 2(a) are absent here as well. For an overall package this is good, nice battery, acceptable performance, awesome software. But the camera lets it down so hard, especially when other competitors are also putting in better products. The Phone 2(a) was far more balanced imo due to A.) it's main lens and B.) Its pretty capable UW cam (same size as the X100 Pro!) Yes, gcam can save this phone but other phones can have gcam as well so those already better phones would be even better. That's why I don't think this is fine. Anyways, I think this is just a gimmick phone. If they spent time on producing a better overall phone with let's say a better camera and instead of spending so much on promoting they just made a better value product this phone'd have automatically become popular but nowadays most reviewers need to be paid to make reviews about phones, otherwise they won't do it. Remember mrwhosetheboss always glazing Vivo till the X80 Pro? Then he just forgot about them, Vivo most likely never sponsored him later. That was the last time they were behind the top flagships and when they actually got better/became the best, the coverage felt more limited. And yes! The price limit is too strict. I think the Nothing Phone 2(a) should be the starter phone for anyone. This phone is something I'd recommend only when giving to a 70 year old or a 3 year old kid, if someone wants to save a few bucks. But in that case a 150 dollar phone would be better? Or maybe the battery of this phone would sway them and make them pay more to get this ig idk. Yeah your framing is top notch, I noticed that thing while playing around with my phone myself, proper framing makes anything look cool. And that's what I found out from another mobile photographer, Shibi-Chan. He's got great photography skills like you and his framing is jaw dropping. I'd say your greatest strength is your editing skills, cus GAH DAMN some of your edited shots look mighty fine. Wow, this phoen is in a test run and only limited units? LOL If nothing keeps this tomfoolery up they'll go bankrupt or something. They need to stop making outrageous stuff and just focus on what makes them great in the first place. There's hundreds of "unique" phones out there, but providing competent phones at great prices whilst making a unique enough phone is what they should do now. They've laid the groundwork for their future phones, the 2(a), 2, CMF Phone, all have a great base. They just need to build off of this and improve the phones instead of trying to just make them more marketable. Sadly, the current consumers are more brand driven/are too brand loyal. Price used to be the main discriminator and now it isn't, people just want Samsung, Google or Apple, regardless of quality/value. Idk man it feels like Nothing is only doing what they need to do to survive but I don't think they'll actually survive if they keep this gimmicky stuff up. If Nothing goes away we'd be mostly doomed cus Vivo and others don't seem to be too keen on the global market as they're already having fierce competition in their own Chinese market lol
@ThroughJermainesLens
@ThroughJermainesLens Месяц назад
Thing is with this one I honestly don't know the sensor they seem to be using, But it seems possibly a 1/1.95" or close to that from what i have read up. And yes those redmi's I haven't tested either of those, so hard for me to say how they compete with this one, but with the overprocessing going on, you could be on to something. I basically don't judge it too much compared to a phone I haven't used because I don't know how the processing on those are, so it would be unfair for me to do so. And Gcam, nah, I feel like all phones should be shown and reviewed as they are, even if it saves the camera on this one. And gimmick, I mean there you aren't wrong there. And yeah those big guys focus on the phones that get great views most of the time, I can understand that side, but at the same time... How do you even compare it then to some of those offerings! I think for the CMF Phone 1 battery is the bigger seller then the camera for sure. And mmm let me check him out! There are some really good ones out there, far better then me, so always intresting to see what some offer!
@kaiserfakinaway5909
@kaiserfakinaway5909 Месяц назад
@@ThroughJermainesLens Hmm yeah I get but I've used an M31 and that phone seems to be better at taking photos than this, the A32 was better than that and the A35 is surely even better. And i've tried a Redmi Note 11 Pro as well and that blows those phones I'd say. Overprocessed? Most definitely but at least the exposure is fine, Nothing seems to know nothing about consistency. Yes! Phones should be reviewed as they are but I feel like the third party software aspect must be noted as well. Idk how st*pid the people are in Europe or America but it's quite normal in Asia to just install Gcam. Reviewers don't even tap to focus anymore so I don't expect them to even know what gcam is. But I think it should be a part of reviews, especially of budget phones. I mean wouldn't you try your best to bring the best out of the products you own? It's better than complaining about being in a bad situation compared to others I'd say. Like for example, I use an S22 Ultra. One night I used it to take a few shots and it looked horrible. I used my dad's iPhone 13 Pro and it outdid my phone in every way, photography AND videography. I started digging and used like 6 gcam ports and then stuck with one and this one takes such nice shots I just don't want to upgrade for 2 more years at least. Like I'm the type of guy that likes minimal processing, I don't hate noise, I hate ugly noise. The type that stays after phones' NR algorithm, idk how else to say it but the shot at 3:55 is an example of it though not as extreme. Like I swear there's something different about going to the Pro Mode and taking a high ISO shot, it's noisier but not as ugly. Anyways, I like the Pro mode shots on this phone but the Gcam shots are like if the noise of the pro mode shots were magically reduced but without losing detail and if there's too much noise then most of the noise is kept for that detail. I can't express how much I love this. I forgot who tuned this port but it's perfection for me. Lots of noise, even though there's noise reduction, but it's not ugly and there's plenty of detail. Photos are large at 5-8 MB per shot but I don't want tough compression on this. And the sharpening is perfect. I don't hate soft photos, I think let's say compared to a RAW file 3-6/10 sharpening is perfect and Samsung does 9+/10 in the default camera mode, Vivo does 7.5+/10 and gcam does 5-6/10. Idk how else to explain it but I hope the comparison helps you understand. I hate Xiaomi's lack of flexibility, like not allowing you to use separate filters in Portrait mode (afaik you can only use specific lens emulations at specific focal lengths), not as great HDR processing in Leica Authentic compared to Leica Vibrant and also Xiaomi's poor human photography. But damn it man I just fell in love with all the other types of shot. Their photos have the exact type of NR I want. I saw GSMarena's photos and fell in love. I just wish for like a phone that has VIvo's level of photography freedom and filters, with Xiaomi's look being possible as well, like realistic night modes. BUT I think one can just mostly copy that style on a Vivo phone by using the Pro mode but that doesn't have HDR processing afaik. That's why I asked for a camera deep dive, to see how far Vivo would allow you to change the algorithm. Oh and btw It'd be cool if you did 100% crop/zoom as compression on YT gets rid of details so a zoom like that would help clear up differences. I mean no need to do it for all photos but just to showcase a point/some interesting differences that are going to stay consistent throughout the whole comparison or you can upload the full size photos in a zip file if that's too much of a hassle idk just throwing some ideas.
