Just a fun little CMOS project with some touch ICs mixed in.
It turns out that 'Likes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
I don't have a Patreon or a regular donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy buying me a coffee, breadboards or CMOS ICs - paypal.me/Davi...
If you are mega mega rich and fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.u...
I put lots of my favourite products and stuff that helps me make video up on this Amazon page - www.amazon.com... It is one of those affiliate things.
If you want to get in contact Twitter is probably the best way @mrdavidjwatts

It looks interesting David, I hope it works without a bodge. Perhaps a "Bodge Badge" is in order. A badge you have to bodge to make work, essential skills. Take Care

Pretty in pink. Better in black. ;-)

:-) The front of the displays are black so the decision was sorta made for me. Black isn't the best soldermask colour for trouble shooting though.

You can fool the free Eagle to accept greater than 100x80 by moving the default board outline down and left when it's been partially populated, and then resizing. Certainly that works with 7.7 (pre Autodesk), which is the version I use.

Ah, I always wondered if there was a way. Smart. I have a full license now but I think it is through Fusion 360 and I am not sure if that is the same, so I will keep plugging away at KiCad.

@@DavidWatts It works because the size restriction is based on coordinates. If you want a board that's 150mm wide, you populate the 'default outline' then select everything, including the outline, and shift it so that the initial origin point of the outline, which was at 0,0, is at -50,0. Then you extend the right board edge from its new +50 x coordinate out to +100, thereby giving a total of 150mm (-50 to +100). I have no experience with the Autodesk Fusion integrated versions. Despite having 'written the book on Eagle' (www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1260019195/ref=tmm_pap_title_0) I now only design PCBs for my own use and for charities and 'not for profit' groups. The Autodesk licensing costs render that impossible on a pension - much as I would like to make use of the 3D integration.

Rather than extend apologies for background noise from a fan and 3D printer, try using a headset which will put the microphone directly in front of your mouth. Add a "dead cat" wind breaker to work as a pop filter and you should be set to go.

PCBWay's purple is closer to pink than purple.

Interesting, I have some purple boards from PCBWay coming, looking forward to finding out.

I did a similar thing a few years ago, used to be an avid Eagle user but when they changed all the licensing options it really annoyed me.....so much so I switched to KiCAD. Yeah it annoyed me at the start and the update process is not great.....but I will never return to Eagle now. I have also changed my board house to AISLER for the last project. Good price and very good standard compare to China. You get a lot less options, it's not fancy, but it is done well.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
Cool, Aisler look pretty good and not that pricing considering it is the EU. Sadly they only have a green soldermask.
@jonelectronics510
@jonelectronics510 4 года назад
@@DavidWatts yeah there are limited options. I have also found they leave annoying board dags on the edges where they route it out from the panel. A small annoyance. I have also found the solder mask is not always applied evenly which again is not a huge deal, it works lol. When order 4 layer boards I have actually found them cheaper than China if you are after an insured delivery (which is a must for me when you are paying £40 per board and not their cheap $2 who cares price!

Nice. I use KiCad, and well yeah, it can be a little sparse on the footprints. Been thinking about making a starburst LED display. I reckon you can get a 24hr clock on a single 16 character (with dot) device...
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
Yeah I saw quick a few of those all in one displays but driving the select pin for each digit would add some extra complications. Really just disabling the display on the other 4026s and only letting one through but it was enough to frazzle my brain.

@7:01 I never even though of that. I leave the USB data lines floating (eg. NC) on all my designs. Should maybe read the USB specification a bit more. BTW. No problems so far with any of the boards that have de D+ and D- floating. And they really should make pink soldermask available. All my boards would probably be in pink! :D A question: why do some of the digits have the decimal point and some don't?
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
I stole those decimal points as silkscreen to put on the actual board surface. The ones in the cutouts where the digits go are just symbolic. Shorting the D+ and D- was supported by the USB spec last time I read it, 500mA on USB1.1 or maybe 2.0.

There is no software, it is just logic chips. No idea if the PCB will work yet.

@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
I think I hate it about as much as any new software I try, all my previous experience is still applicable here. It isn't like learning a new programming language, I know most of the rules, just not all the buttons to press. I doubt I will ditch Eagle completely but KiCad is pretty darn good.
