So you applied, received an RGN from the CMP, and finally the day came when you picked up your lottery surplus US Army M1911. What now?
I shared a few tips and pointers just from my perspective of what to think about and what to expect when you receive your firearm. Since the CMP is now working round 3, I figured I would share some thoughts.
This video is not a demonstration of how to disassemble a 1911 Government model, although I do so in certain parts of the footage.
I am not a qualified gunsmith or expert marksman I’m simply sharing my experiences.

Nice video. I have applied and received my random number, and am now in the waiting stage. I was impressed with the condition of yours, given that it's a rack grade. I'm hoping that a service grade will be available when my number comes up, but they always remind you that there's no way to know. Thanks for sharing. You offer some good tips! Enjoy your CMP 1911!

Very good point about checking springs! When I got mine, I replaced the firing pin spring. It was almost 1/2 the size of the normal ones... I would bet money it would have gone off if dropped. Shes all good now though!

I think Wolfe makes an extra power firing pin return spring that can help prevent that from happening.

@@cornfromajar3222I got mine on the second round. I was offered a rack grade or field grade. I opted for field grade and wound up with an Ithaca. My field grade didn’t look as good as your rack grade. The worst thing was the rear sight. It looked like it was used to hammer something. Most people seem to luck out, by the comments. I’m real interested in the new “Range Grade.” Now that we can buy a second I may try for one of those.

We always oiled our M9s lightly after firing. Never left dry when turning in. Maybe that's the difference between the Air Force and the other services!

Well it’s really about storage. If the vault or storage area doesn’t have a dehumidifier, then I would certainly keep a little oil on it to fight moisture and ultimately rust. That may have been the case. Thanks for hating and thanks for coming by!

I'm in a great internal debate. I have enough money to buy one of the upper grade 1911's or a Garand or there's a American Eagle Luger for sale. It's a tough decisions.
@cornfromajar3222
@cornfromajar3222 Год назад
That is tough. What really pulled me to the 1911 is that there are (seemingly) more Garands available, and likely in the future you can purchase one. The intrigue of the 1911 and the current polical climate makes me wonder how long the 1911s will be offered. With the stroke of a pen, sales of the 1911 can be stopped. Thanks for coming by!

CMP 1911 sales Round 3 Sent required information on 9/12/22. RGN received on 10/3/22 (34042). Notification on 11/16/22 and picked up at FFL on 11/17/22. A Service Grade 1943 Remington Rand frame and a (GI rep) slide roll mark 7790314. Turns out to be a Colt National Match Hard Slide with matching chrome lined barrel. "45 AUTO - 7791193- '85". All proof and provenance indicators are legible. In spite of being deeply blasted prior to re Parkerizing .The Army Odrnance crossed canons have a "MR" over strike, but a portion is still visible. Noticeably, ABSENT are arsenaling indicators a VERY clean piece. So it hasn't been recycled over and over again. Thank you to CMP for keeping these pieces of history available to America. MSgt USAF ret '73-'95 former SP and Armorer.

So is there any advantage or advantages to ordering a service grade over a rack grade? Question because my number is soon coming up next in line in the cmp1911 program and I still can’t decide which one I want!
@cornfromajar3222
@cornfromajar3222 Год назад
Best advice I can give here-just from me. Go to the CMP Forums and look at the posts where users upload pics. One is actually called “let’s see some rack grades.” Let me tell you friend you will see some baaaaaddddd ones. I’m talking pulled out of a shipwreck bad looking. If you are willing to except a gun in bad shape, and be happy with it, then take the risk of ordering a rack grade - hope for the best prepare for the worst. If you cannot live with yourself and think the extra money is worth a nicer gun, get a higher grade. I feel like I truly came away Lucky in mine but I was fully prepared to receive a 1911 that came off of the titanic. It is a tough choice. Thanks for coming by!

@@cornfromajar3222 originally I put money aside for a service grade because I thought it was the best option. Then I did more research and find out I would like to get as close to a ww2 looking 1911 as possible. Not all rusty but just some wear n tear the usual ww2 looking 1911. I also dont want one that has some brand new no name slide or frame. But ok I will give that page on the forum a look.thanks!
@dlbracer56
@dlbracer56 Год назад
Well, you HOPE to get the "unicorn" all original period correct parts with matching frame and slide. What you should expect is exactly as CMP describes them. Regardless of grade, these have been disassembled parts tossed into bins, cleaned, refinished, and reassembled. My "no name" slide "irritated " me, but after doing some research, I changed my opinion. I have an EXCELLENT 1911A1, and I am proud to be its new forever owner. On the flip side, I HAVE seen some great looking "field" grade 1911A1 out of CMP. It's the luck of the draw.

So I’m in the waiting stage for my 1911, I’ve heard people on the fourms talk about oiling their frames when they get a 1911 that has been re Parkerised, can you really oil down the pistol to get a darker finish? Can you really do this?
@cornfromajar3222
@cornfromajar3222 Год назад
I talk about that in the video some. One poster in the forum from Round 1 actually completely disassembled his and stored it in oil for almost 2 years and his before and after pics looked great. I don’t suspect it would cause damage as long as you use a lubricant designed for firearms (not WD-40 or motor oil). My problem is I wouldn’t leave it that long because I do shoot mine occasionally and create videos sometimes. I would think a more experienced shooter may be able to chime in on this one with more insight, as I’m no expert. Thanks for coming by!

How long after you received your RGN number did it take for them to contact you that your number was up and your gun was ready to deliver. I’m concerned that if they did call I might have declined the call due to unknown number. I’m a little concerned. Thanks. Danny

I mailed my packet in February they called me in September. They will call three times and send you and email if you don’t answer. The number will be an Alabama area code. If you follow the CMP forums, there is a thread where folks drop their RGN and timeframe when they called and when I saw numbers close to mine I kept an eye out. It maybe was within a week of when the forums had listed.
