Mine was bought in the “potluck for $310 delivered” days. Delivered by the mailman in a beatup cardboard box, inside it was wrapped in plastic. Very hard to determine the condition given the larding with cosmoline. Took off the wood and gave it the Easy-Off Oven Cleaner bath. And inside? A rifle that appeared in like new condition throughout, very accurate from the outset. I won the CMP lottery.
I’ve gotten much worse condition rack grades, I’d be happy to get one like yours, especially since you say it shoots well, sometimes you get rack grades with very bad barrels.
I did the same as you...ordered a Rack Grade very similar to yours as nothing else was available in early August, and then I ordered a Field Grade when they became available a few weeks later. My Rack Grade is a Philippines return (confirmed via FOIA) with a 3 mil SA serial and pretty much all mixed parts as well as a later USGA stock. Muzzle wear measured in at 6, unfortunately though. My Field Grade is nicer in just about every way: mostly SA with a '43 receiver and '44 barrel as well as a Danish stock. Very happy with the Field and will probably sell my Rack since I only wanted one Garand in the first place. Hope I can get my money back on it.
When did the CMP stop sending M1s in those nice plastic cases? I bought a service grade M1 back around 2020 or 2021. It came in a n8ce black hard plastic case.
According to the website CMP will only send you 1 hard case per year. In this video OP says the rifle came with a note apologizing for logistical issues and the hard case shipped separately.
Strange, they should provide one hard case per calendar year according to the website. Nice early trigger guard and 6 didget serial number. I'm with you on the original GI wood. Nice pick up!
I forgot to mention it in the video, but I received a hard case several weeks after receiving the rifle. There was a note with the rifle stating supply issues for not sending it with a case. Thanks, it’s a great gun!
I plan to order 2 rack grades. Looks like you did well but another youtuber looks like he didn't have the same luck. I feel a little apprehensive after watching the other guys videos but for $700 each what can one expect.
Wow, I ordered a Field Grade in 2012. I disassembled and cleaned the internals and externals again. Replace a couple of parts, then refinished the wood with linseed oil. The dings and dents remained. Most recents replaced the barrel. (muzzle gauge over 3). Shoots very well now. At some point I may order another from CMP.
