Great video! I enjoy following the journey and I love watching Canadian freights especially those in the north. The length of some of the freights is amazing - Britain has frequent but shorter trains of maybe no more than 30 cars. Two questions - I read that many minor lines in the north have been abandoned - do they rip up the track or just leave everything behind? Do you know of a map that shows the full extent of the rail network in Alberta/NorthWest Terrritories including abandoned lines?
The map you should try is SPV's (Steam Powered Video) Comprehensive Railroad Atlas of North America, Western Canada. It's from 2006 so maybe You will find some additional lines without traffic, like the conection between Grand Prairie, AB and Dawson Creek, BC. Reasons to leave or rip up track are maybe same as in Europe. Scrap prices, using the rails on other lines, other use for land, ... Often the land belongs not to the railroads, and they have only easemants or they have leased it.
@Ingramdumpkiss Hi, Unlike in the Prairies, in the north there is much more active than gone. In Northwest Territories the only miles that were abonded are the 40miles between Pine Jct. (south of Hay River) and Pine Point. The track ends at the highway. From what I asume from google maps the track is removed all the way to Pine Point, but I didn' t explored it more precisely. I liked more to see some action. Hope you've seen my video of 534 too. It follows an empty tank train from Hay River sb.
