CNA Skill #19 Assist the resident with a bedpan. 

I am a 24/7 caregiver for my wife and it is getting more and more difficult to get her to the bathroom. I am trying to prepare for the use of a bedpan although she does not like them. I am just discovering this entire CNA series which I am hoping will improve my level of care.This was an excellent introduction. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your videos. Went through all of them at least twice before my state exam two days ago. I passed!! I took it with American Red Cross, as well. One of my evaluators told me I barely passed my PPE skill. She told me that my hair had to be in a bun and not a high pony tail because I was contaminating myself with the hair that was hanging down. So picky on little things! Just letting you know so that you can relay that info to the students with longer hair in your course :)

That's the way you should do bedpan skill. Great Job.!!

I'll try to get the rest when its possible. It's kind of hard to find people who would like to participate in these videos. When it comes to doing any of the vital sign skills you will still have to do the opening procedure and your ending procedure. So please refer to the other videos on how I do the opening and closing. The key points to remember when it comes to doing blood pressure is to always do it on the left arm because its closest to the heart, make sure you clean the stethescope using 3 alcohol swabs, place the blood pressure cuff properly, feel for the brachial pulse, then proceed to take the residents blood pressure. So the stethoscope should be placed where you felt that brachial pulse. Pump the cuff to about 180 never to 200 and slowly release the air. Once you start releasing the air you should be listening to the 1st beat you hear. Once you hear that 1st beat where ever that needle is on the gage is your systolic number. Keep listening for the last beat and where ever you see the needle is on the gage that number is your diastolic number. Example 144/46. Always remember that its going to be even numbers and the unit of measurement of blood pressure is mmHg= milimeters of mercury. So you documentation for the state test should look like this BP= 144/46 mmHg.

In FL there are some minor differences required in the exam. For example we put gloves on before touching the bed pan and this skill is done on another student

Just passed the class in San Bernardino.. If you make a mistake you have time to fix it!!! I put the bed pan without the bed protector at first I just said "oops hold on Mrs Jones I forgot to put this I'm so sorry " what failed some of the students were small mistakes like side rails and call lights and not making a correction when the proctor acts you about your principles of care after the skill

I'm from Michigan, and we are being told in CNA class that we are not to use side rails at all, because they are considered restraints. That's apparently just for nursing homes, because when I was in the hospital having surgery, I absolutely had side rails.

Cause If just in case I am tasked to do occupied bed then assisting client with bed pan and perineal care. Wouldn't those skills need alot of time? Thank you for your response.

Hello dear. you did really great thing and it's more easy to remember the steps you're doing... but there's only one thing that you forget. the side rail from the opposite side. as we all know the first thing we have to keep in mind is that the patient safety. that's the most thing and important to remember. Hi there - I’m a law student working on a mock case that involves a nurse who is fired due to her inability to lift a patient who needs to use a bed pan (I’m representing the nurse). I would be grateful for your insight: if you were unable to roll a patient over, is there any special technology you could use? Is it standard for a hospital to have this type of equipment?

I'm confused my teacher tells me NOT to cover the patient but all the videos do, when taking the NACES do you cover the patient or not bc I'm going by the book and I'm lost.

Thanks so much for your videos! They help so much! I have a question about this skill for state test. You said at ARC we have to use the standard bedpan for the skill and can't use the fracture pan. Why do we have to use the standard if the packet says we can use either one? Thanks so much!

We have been taught to put some water or wet the bedpan before giving it too patient so that feaces wont stick with bedpan!is this we suppose to do or not
