It seems Saudi Aramco makes a lot of money selling petroleum and petroleum related products. The Saudi Royal Family has more money than they know what to do with it. Why would Saudi Royal Family need more money to diversify their Kingdom's economy? They can just use the money generated by oil sales and diversify Saudi Arabia's economy. Unless they cannot diversify their economy. That is another thing.

I taught electrical control systems engineering technology in two colleges in Saudi Arabia to Saudis, young men only. The Saudi government has passed a law that used to require that any company in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) hires at least 30% of their employees who are Saudis. Last year, that percentage of Saudi employees required was increased to 40%. The KSA has a population of 25 million Saudis and 6.1 million expatriates. Up until 1961, slavery was allowed in KSA and Saudis don't actually work. They have slaves (now they have expats) who do the work. This means that the labour of 6.1 million expats contributes ALL the labour for the entire country. The companies who are required to hire Saudis either pay them to stay home because they are unskilled, or if the Saudi 'worker' is required to come into work, they are given an 'assistant' who is qualified to do their job and the Saudi sits in an elaborate office and takes credit for his expat's (slave) work. One of my own students remarked to me during my first month there that, "We will never have to do any of this stuff" when I was trying to get them to learn and do assignments. I couldn't believe the attitude he had but since, I have found out that they all aspire to be 'managers' and that they will have their own expat to do their job. I was expected to pass them even though the students rarely attended 50% of my classes and turned in the work of others as if it was their own. The biggest challenge for the Saudis, in my opinion, is that they believe that they are 'special' and chosen by God to not only have the Prophet Mohammad given to them, but also were given the bounty of all the oil riches. Furthering this entitlement attitude is the way that they treat their women; in Saudi culture, women are to be treated like princesses. If you can accept that concept, by extension Saudi males must then have to be a prince to marry one of these princesses and a prince doesn't have to work, but is designed to rule over others. The Saudi mindset is to be the boss over the expat (slaves) and be rich as a result of their inherent Saudi heritage. For the Saudi Kingdom to succeed in the world, they need to relinquish this maladaptive attitude of royal entitlements and need to see work as honourable. The Saudis also need to realize that they were put on earth like the rest of us to serve their fellow human being by their labours and efforts they make to produce goods and services we actually need. They don't even extract their own oil.

Although I have only a small sample of students to interact with and only a few short (13) months direct experience, I was involved with a large national (SSS) group of instructors as the Head of Department for our college and I lived in a compound with many other expats who all shared their observations and experiences with trying to help the Saudis make the change into contributing citizens. Engineers with Aramco complained that they couldn't get their Saudi workers to attend the job site or do the simplest tasks without direct handholding and supervision. The most desired jobs in Aramco were 'security' and 'fire fighting' where the Saudis had to do little or nothing. Any job that required physical effort by a Saudi was shirked off to a Bangladeshi, Afghani or Indian. The Saudi government did a study nearly 3 years ago on the amount of actual work that the Saudis who were employed in government did and found it to be 23 minutes a week! They set a goal for the next year to try to double that number. In our colleges, we were required to hire Saudis and we found that they performed little measurable work output as well even as 'security' guards. I was given a Saudi 'assistant' instructor who I worked with to try to get him to make lesson plans and quizzes for a few lessons that I was helping him to develop for his own growth as an instructor and he turned out copies of things he found on the internet or just plain garbage. He was a good man but lacked the ability or knowledge or desire to produce very much. I liked him for his personality but struggled to get him to produce much of anything of quality. This is a common theme that most expats that were in positions of authority found when we talked.

Hi Robert, Perhaps some of whom you have taught in this small technical college share this low self-regard behaviour. I think this issue is rooted to the acuumulation of "failure of education system" over 12 years of pre-college period. However, I am very optimistic about the future as I see a huge cultural transformation. Now a days young guys & ladies are working in food trucks, volunteering & Uber .. etc. those are not very relaxed jobs. Anyways, if you have taught in a university or a reputable technical college, you could have definitely seen the other half of the cup. You were given a great opportunity to make change in this community but I think you failed. Regarding the productivity study, I was digging into this study which says the productivity is few hours a month. The fact is this was not approved to be published because of technical issues (they way of constructing this statistics). Though you have taught in a small community college in a tiny city, I tend to partially agree that we have some young guys who are dependent, but this is a low percentage of the whole youth population. Perhaps if a national well educated leader was holding your position, he would not have complained in the youtube but accepted the challange and worked toward a tangable improvement. The change must come from an insider for sure.

Anna Hani As Saudi we have jobs we have houses. You can say you are Saudi but you can not prove it. I agree that we have issues with the amount of people who do have places to live by renting but the actual issue they want to have their own homes so the problem is not same as you show. The issue about jobs is actually a problem divided between the government and the civilians we have issues that can be fixed in the future we do just to be honest and face it. We are still handling the issues but all what we need to do is to take it seriously because if we late too much it is not good but now as I see and as I did some research and read many studies and see what is going in the ground we are doing good. Not good. Very Goood..

The government and civilians now are all looking to improve the land of the holy mosques Saudi Arabia so we are going in the right path and not all al saud are in the government. You seem like you do not know that not all alsaud in the government because it is a family. And not all alsaud can lead.. There is specific leaders from that family not all the family. However, it doesn't matter because who lead in Saudi Arabia is the deep government. All our kings and princes are just same as in your country trump and all these guys.
