I've cut Aluminium 1/4" at 85ipm just fine and I to have a water table. If you want a better outcome you could substitute with argon but it would be a lot more expensive.
@MojoMfg

Be careful with airborne aluminum dust, and burnt aluminum smoke. Keep shop well ventilated. Good work

Yeah I need to have some better ventilation, that kind of stuff scares me.

Hey Mojo(?), lately I have been cutting 0.090" 2024 Al at 100ipm at 27a (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_stoN-Krzwo.html) with minimal dross. I loved the idea of the tape measure (I'll steal that one.)! I'm always struggling to find distances I can measure in photos, the tape solves that. Ciao, Marco.

That's awesome! I will surely be cutting faster next time. You have a sweet setup too!

From what I've heard, a lot of lithium-aluminum alloy swarf in the water table can be a problem, especially if you leave a sheet of material on the table overnight.

Find or download a hypertherm 65 or85 manual. It has speeds and all the settings you need in there. Not saying they are exact but very close.
@MojoMfg

Oh yeah that will definitely help a lot!

That thin of aluminum I believe you can run around 200ipm
@tjs_welding_and_fabrication
@tjs_welding_and_fabrication 5 лет назад
Yes. That sounds about right. I bet his back side dross will clear up.
@MojoMfg
@MojoMfg 5 лет назад
I think by the end of it I was at 65ipm but I assume I could have gone faster. The dross on the backside still cleaned up nicely with the belt grinder.

When we used argon with 5 or 7% hydrogen as plasma welding shield gas, we also were concerned about the hydrogen. I am not sure where the information came from, but I still remember a figure 13% asa being the threshold mixture. Threshold in what? Probably in air, which is 78% nitrogen and just 21% oxygen? Anyway, I was comforted by an understanding that the 5 or 7% hydrogen in inert gas argon would not become dangerous even after it was discharged into open air. Nothing ever led me to change my mind. By the way, there is an old arc welding process where pure hydrogen is blown through an arc which is burning between two tungsten rods. When we saw a demonstration of that, THEN we were quite a bit scared. Actually that process was not normal welding, it was powder hardfacing. But whatever...

What is the thickness (mm) of the aluminium used in the video? Do you mind sharing the link to the aluminium source?

Great idea on the tape measure in the picture. I've done similar with a picture in fusion, but without the tape. I'll be giving that a try! Thanks! :)

Don't quote me on this but, I believe the only way aluminum can make hydrogen is if it has electrolytes in the water like salt. With the absence of electrolytes I don't know if it would create hydrogen. To the best of my knowledge it should not.
@MojoMfg
@MojoMfg 5 лет назад
That's good to know. I saw a lot about lithium too, basically lithium should not be cut with water period.

Hey, yeah sorry about that. It fit up great, drilled some holes and pop riveted it right to the firewall.

How did you connect plasma to Tormach / LinuxCNC OS? Is it legal or a hack?
@MojoMfg
@MojoMfg 5 лет назад
It's definitely legal. I bought pathpilot 2.0 from Tormach and loaded it on that computer. Then I configured the code to run that plasma. It took a really long time to figure out and I had a lot help from others that knew much more about it than me.

There are a lot of guys that say plasma cutting aluminum with a water table will cause explosions from the hydrogen gas being trapped in the water. If you have the right setup with the right material then there's nothing to worry about.

It seems like you are cutting very slow. Did you try cutting faster? I cut 16 gauge (.060" thick) steel at 30 amps and 100 ipm feed and I get great cuts. I haven't tried cutting aluminum yet but I would think you could cut close to the same feed rate.
@MojoMfg
@MojoMfg 5 лет назад
I ended up going about 65ipm but I realized I could have gone even faster. I think I will be moving a little faster next time. It still cleaned up nicely though.
