On New Year's Eve 1999, I was in Finland! I remember when the 2000s started, but then I drove back to Sweden which meant that I drove back into the 20th century
I remember sitting in my bedroom watching this as it happened. It was amazing to see the whole world celebrating the same thing. I even turned down a trip to the store with my parents that day. My mom asked if I wanted to go, and I said, "No thanks. This is too interesting and I don't want to miss it." For one day, it seemed as if the whole world was at peace.
I felt the same way and did the same thing. I was so full of awe and hope and felt so connected to other people and the world. I loved it all -- from the islanders welcoming 2000 with music and dance to the major urban fireworks. It's now summer of 2022, and yeah, that feeling is gone, gone, gone. Nice while it lasted, though.

@@de-vine2168 a little bit I remember thinking it was really cool but I remember y2k was way more talked about in the end of 1999 than the turn of the melenium it almost overshadowed it for most people I think
True! I was born in 1990 and yes it was awesome. I never thought about having to meet aliens that midnight or the world would end something like that lol
Seeing some of the most Ancient Cultures and Civilizations celebrating the new millennium made made cry so hard. So majestic, fascinating, fantastic and pure amazing. It brought me serious goosebumps as well.
I love living in this era, I know there is so much shit and negativity, but we are truly living one of the most pivotal times in the history of mankind. For the first time we are connected, we can communicate, organize, mobilize in a worldwide scale. It is truly such a wonderful time to be alive and it is the of all of us to steer this ship into hopeful horizons.
Only a few months later the Olympic games were held in Sydney. It was the last time the world was able to come together and celebrate as one before the world changed forever only 1 year later.
@@Oscar-Green And it would be incorrect to claim so. The world looked peaceful, yet so mesmerizing and wonderful in the year 2000, its a shame that I was not born yet to be a part of it.
It had to be unbelievable to know that from an hour to another, the 1990s would end, the 20th century would end and the second millenium would end and that at the next day would be another timeline, like the movies and series of the past told... The year 2000 was like a big achievement for mankind.
sadly, I never get to experience that because as a 9 year old kid the adults already scared us with that y2k bullshit and all I think the entire New Year's eve was aliens.
It was the biggest year in the Sydney’s history and the biggest New Years Fireworks to go with it sad to say it’s lost some of sparkle now I was out there the last time they used a bridge effect in 2014
Beautiful. I am in tears after watching. I remember our family came back from watch night church service on 31st Dec and switched on the TV to see what's happening around the world. And ended up watching this.
Everybody had a certain level of innocence, curiosity, and optimism in their eyes. All that was lost about a year after the new millennium that changed our world forever.
Thank you so much for uploading this piece of modern history worthy to be seen by younger ones: how the world once upon a time united in celebration seeing 1999 go to 2000, a special New Year at that! Again, thank you so much!
2000 2 = Millennium (First) 0 = Century (Second) 0 = Decade (Third) 0 = Year So it was a new year (2000th), decade (200th), century (21st) and millennium (2nd) all at the same time! How cool is that! Every other millennium will be like this one was!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I watched it from start to finish without interruption. I bought the VHS version of this documentary when it came out 20 years ago, and I watched the LIFE out of it! So much so that it was unhealthy and I'm surprised at how well I still know all the worldwide celebrations. I last watched that VHS tape on New Year's Eve 2009 (10 years ago today) and I just watched it again today on New Year's Eve 2019. I probably will not watch this again until New Year's Eve 2029. Who knows if it'll still be around anywhere by then... Happy New Year!
it is crazy to think that that one number in the year has been the same since the middle ages. stuff like this really makes it easier to connect with our ancestors.
@Kirk Wolfe everyone has a different experience of how they feel about 2022 but I like it so far, it feels a little bit like last year to me but I'm hoping it'll be 3 times better in 2023.
when the fireworks glare and the auld lang syne plays it gives me goosebumps. This never gave me that same feel when I was 9 because I stayed at home waiting for the y2k bug scare to be true lol But that New Year's eve must be the most awesome thing and I'm proud that I was already alive then.
I remember sitting down in my living room watching this and running to the roof to watch the fireworks on the Mont-Royal. Those where the days i wish we can turn back time!
I was 13 at the time, it was incredibly optimistic!! And we had all this new technology and the internet had just became accessible!! It seemed like it was gonna be a very bright future! I think it still can be we just have to focus and make the future we want for our selfs.
Widely celebrated not just because of a new millinea but because it brings new souls into the world which at this point all grew up and became aware of the world. Today is my birthday and im feeling very energetic in knowledge today of all days
I remember watching this as a kid. I was 9 at the time. I'm 28 now! Was a pretty big deal! I remember people thought the end of the world was coming! Lol
Just a little 9 year old in Queensland, Australia, who had asked my mum to wake me up just before the countdown. She fell asleep! I was jolted awake by the countdown anyway
I was 9 aswell at this time, in Adelaide, I remember a massive street party, the entire neighbourhood was partying, I had glow sticks and sparklers with the other kids on the street, while the adults were drinking and singing! It's a great memory ❤
I was also 9 that time lol I was inside the house when my uncles and cousins were playing with fireworks. I remember they lit firecrackers at the middle of the road.
I watched this live on my Old Sony Trinitron TV. I had no internet nor computer at the time. The divide between rich countries and poor ones was so high at the time, and the US was the sole super power with no rivals in the world.
If anyone is from 20th century we will never experience a new milinuem unless your fortunate enough to live above 100 btw it’s going to be 2019 in 48 hours
definitely remember on how excited i that got the year 2000 when the Rio Grande Valley in the state of Texas was about to get into the new millennium and i was only 8 years old back then especially when we finally got into Saturday January 1st 2000 this show was some awesome fun times back then when we were all worried about Y2K thank goodness it didn't happen and now it's 21 years later we are about to go into 2022 so happy New Year everybody
We are fortunate yet melancholic witnesses of a unique era, observing the breathtaking pace of tech advancement alongside the fading of simpler times, forever changing our connection to the world and to each other.
On New Year's Eve 1999. I was in Dartmouth with my Cousins, my Aunties, my Mom, my Uncles in Bessemer, Alabama I was playing the N64 Gauntlet Legends and heading to our Church Zion Hill Baptist Church to look back at the LAST Century, and heading to a New Century, New Decade.
2020 is only 7 months away and it will be a very special year it will celebrate living 20 years of this century and the year 2021 will celebrate living 20 years of the millennium
FreddyJames1997 That’s right, in less than 6 months it’s the 203rd decade because 2020 is the new decade, not 2021, like the century & millennium started in 2000, not 2001, there is no year 0, but there is no year 1 either, nor 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, nor 500 because the dating system wasn’t usage until it was created by Dionysus Exiguus in 525 CE
@@Javi228 Then say, you genious, when was the first decade? a) from 0-10 b) from 1-11 I say for you, that there wasnt year 0, the first year was AD 1 Sok logically b) is correct.
just imagine that it was new year for year 2000! and 4 month after this i was born, im just feels weird and lucky to be born in the beautifull year of 2000!
I'm glad I was witnessing this beautiful moment I was 10 years old at the time 28 now and still remember ❤️😍😢 now December 4th 2018 🙏 oh and phone is touch screen now LOL
lol I was 9 I just watched the telecast on TV and never thought of it as really something special because all I remember was the y2k bug scare and I thought about aliens and shit
I was 13 and I knew what a monumental event it was to have the number in the thousands column of the year change from a 1 to a 2. The feeling was very special to have lived through that.
why is it I get so emotional watching this I was 9 years old I wish I had ben older during this so I could realize how big a thing this was my 9 year old mind didn't think of it as a new millennia. I wish I could have experienced it actually.. I always feel like I missed out. at least I was alive during it though.
So many hopes and dreams duerimg that time the world for people felt exciting it felt like a new begining and then not 12 months later something would happen that changed the entire world forever suddenly we didnt feel so safe and happy
