After the CNW Alco C628's were retired in Marquette Range ore service, we visited the area in 1988, 1989 and 1992. Interesting to note is the change from 3 SD40-2's to 2 SD50's or GE's between 1988 and 89. We did a slow drive by of the stored 628's at Escanaba yard. It was a holiday and nobody was around Wouldn't even think about doing this today.

i was a switchman for the cnw hired on in 93... i remember when the UP sold the ore docks, there was a flood of guys moving south going wherever their seniority allowed... they ended up in the adams pool, milwaukee (butler yard) and janesville (back when the GM plant was still operational) ... man how times changed

Theres something about the color scheme of CNW s that just look cool. Just bought 2 of them in HO. A GP 35-7 , AND an SD 45. DCC. BOTH look great .. now gotta keep doing track work and beg more space. Ha. Thanks bro.

Great video of the past... one of my coworkers, who is now retired, worked for the CNW and the UP after the merger... He was sent up to escanaba to remove tools before the operation was sold to the Wisconsin Central... The last thing they did before returning back to Milwaukee was take down anything that said CNW on it... The escanaba shop CNW herald is hanging on my wall!

They got those C-628's from Norfolk and Western. I never heard what they did with them. I saw several in Escanaba MI.

No, the SDCAT was numbered 6000. The 6500 was the only CNW SD45 to get a complete rebuild, it was the first in what was to be a program to rebuild the entire class but deemed to expensive. They bought new SD50's instead.

The Canadian National most likely operates this. It would be hard to get close to CN rail yards.

+Andrew Falconer Yes, this is now CN. I would not attempt to do the things we did in the 1990s nowadays; Back then things were pretty casual, as long as you didn't do anything stupid; You were free to roam around engine terminals and port facilities and were even offered the occasional cab ride. Today you would be arrested for thinking about it.

Keith Bunner Not for lack of trying. There was an effort to do so. Unfortunately the C628s were traded to EMD for new power. At the time, EMD had a contract with Pielet Bros. to scrap all trade ins, and the contract specified they had to be cut up and couldn't be resold intact. The preservation effort ran aground on this. Pielet was like a roach motel. You could check in but not check out.....
