Centuries of the North Woods is the epic documentary about the Chicago & North Western’s Alco C628 locomotives in iron ore service in Upper Michigan. In Part 1, we’ll look at the Great Horsepower Race that created the C628 - and quickly supplanted it. And we’ll examine the C&NW’s legendary 1973 motive power shortage that brought these 30 locomotives from Norfolk & Western’s coal territory to iron ore country.

I recently purchased two N scale C628 locomotives as they're among some of my favorites. Gonna add them to my fictional railroad's history and lore.

Wow! Very nice documentary on Alco locomotives. We still have many Alco's still running on the Western New York & Pennsylvania railroad locally. It's a testament to Alco products. Great video!!

SP will always be my favorite my dad worked for them and they were a big part of my childhood and the small logging town I grew up in on the Oregon coast

Terrific, well done!!! I remember vividly these locomotives, being a "gandy dancer" at Kenosha and Racine WI back in the mid 70's. We called them the "rock-crushers"!!! It was a handsome locomotive. . . smooth lines, clean lines, and that high hood put it over the top! Not to mention that awesome sound. . .

Great video on the big Alcos. I photographed several of them when the N&W owned them. They were quite impressive.

I grew up along the Lehigh Valley, their 628s were painted black and white, we called them Snowbirds, we loved them. Conversely the MoW crews called them "rail rippers" and hated them.
