Coach: Luxury or Not? Let's Settle the Debate | Is Coach Luxury

When evaluating whether Coach qualifies as a luxury brand, several factors come into play. While Coach is undeniably positioned in the upper echelons of the fashion world, its status as a luxury brand may be subject to interpretation. Coach certainly offers luxury products, particularly its leather bags and accessories, which boast high-quality craftsmanship and exquisite design. However, compared to other renowned luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Hermès, Coach tends to occupy a slightly lower price point. While Louis Vuitton and Hermès are synonymous with exclusivity and prestige, often commanding significantly higher prices for their iconic pieces, Coach appeals to a broader market with a balance of quality and accessibility. This nuanced distinction prompts debate among fashion enthusiasts regarding Coach's precise standing in the realm of luxury brands. Ultimately, whether Coach is perceived as a luxury brand may depend on individual perspectives and the criteria used to define luxury in the ever-evolving landscape of fashion.

This year I'd love to add more pieces from Hermès like the Birkin size 40, Constance, 24/24 and Bolide. Maybe I'll be bad and get an Hermès Kelly 40! I also recently fell in love with the Chanel Jumbo- so that's kind of a must-have for my collection, along with a Chanel Mini Rectangle and a Chanel Reissue. Aside from those, I'd love to add a few more Fendi Peekaboo bags to my collection along with a Fendi Baguette. Make sure you subscribe to see what I buy this year!
If you're into channels that include luxury fashion, shopping, luxury unboxings and reveals, luxury travel, and daily vlogs- basically anything that has to do with life and style, then this is the channel for you! We'll often talk about my collection which includes Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Gucci, Fendi, Hermès, Coach and YSL. We'll also look at current trends and upcoming releases from each of the houses.

I remember when my mom bought her first Coach bag. It was a big deal given its price. She used to buy JcPenny bags and this was a drastic price difference. So yes, Coach is luxury. Is it the top of luxury no. Just like most things in life, luxury has levels. Nothing is very just black and white.

Coach used to be up there in price with LV back in the 90s and early 2000s. You know my opinion already. It’s Luxury and when people say that Coach is not luxury, that’s a completely classist statement IMO.

Coach is luxury. We have a choice to spend less but choose to indulge in the brand. As it stands now, I have a difficult time purchasing Coach like I used to considering that I can get a vintage Louis Vuitton/Gucci/Dior/Fendi/Prada piece for less. Is Coach Luxury? Absolutely. I said what I said.🥰

@@VivienneKarleneCoach is Lux to AMERICA. If their looking to branch out and bridge the gap in other markets (thus the merger with Kurig Group) then they have to expand their Profile beyond AMERICA. Like LV and Hermes they’ve got to move international. Something that would aid in this is to take their products out of TJ Maxx/Marshals. Like MIchael Kors it’s a killer on the product and the Brand’s profile. I’d. Love to work at a big fashion house/ corporate.

Dooney and Bourke / Coach used to be more expensive than LV in the 90s, when I went to buy my Speedy 30 in Oct 1994 my DB bucket and Coach flap bags cost more than that Speedy by $15 and the Coach pochette and wallet and the Dooney wallet were $25 more than the LV version. The funny thing is DB is still better quality than LV or Coach but LV and Coach are the brand name that is more popular.

I agree, Coach is luxury. It’s contemporary American luxury. It seems that it gets thrown into the “NOT” category due to price point, which could come off as a form of classism. Never had a bad customer service experience in Coach. Great video!! Thanks for sharing 😊

Elitism plays a big role here but so do the nuances of language. Coach bags are “A luxury” if you are going by the dictionary definition of the word “luxury” as compared to, in your example, a $5 canvas tote. And yes, many people will find them luxurious, both in quality and experience. But if the comparison is to traditional couturiers and purveyors of sumptuous lifestyles to the millionaire and billionaire classes - and I think that is the actual discussion here - then it’s pretty clear Coach is not Luxury with a capital “L”.

"Quality" and "luxury" aren't always the same thing, but for me, Coach threads that needle. Am I paying more than I need to? Sure. Do I feel like an extra digit has been tacked on just because of the brand? No. I mentioned this in a video on another channel recently, but I lowkey think these luxury brands are mocking their customers. It was an unboxing of a $1900 YSL bag, and the zipper literally broke right out of the box. It is absolutely wild to me that a $40 Jansport from Target is better quality than some of these bags that cost thousands. I know different bags have different purposes and people aren't buying Hermes for the same reason they're buying a backpack, but, like you said, you also shouldn't have to worry about the hardware falling off a four- or five-figure bag.

Luxury is in the eye of the beholder. I've seen people on handbag forums call $500 bags from Coach and other contemporary brands "cheap," and let's be clear, $500 is not to cheap to 90%+ of the world's population. The vast majority of people don't have an extra $500 to spend on a handbag, and may never spend that much on a bag in their lifetime. For many people who buy Coach bags, it's a splurge for them; they probably aren't buying more than 1-2 handbags a year. Just because far more people can afford Coach bags than Chanel doesn't make it universally accessible -- or a necessity.

I like and agree with your perspective on this! I say to each his or her own! The definition of what is or isn’t luxury isn’t what’s important … it’s that the bags you own make you happy and spark joy. I own Chanel, Fendi, Dior, Prada, Gucci, Chloe, etc. I also own Dooney & Bourke, Coach (vintage is my fave!), Kate Spade, and Michael Kors. I love and carry them all for different reasons! I’m obsessed with the new Coach quilted Tabby bag! Whether or not it’s luxury doesn’t matter to me … it’s luxurious and gorgeous looking, and that’s good enough for me! ❤

That's frustrating to hear about your experience with LV! It's disappointing when a luxury brand doesn't live up to expectations, especially when it comes to durability and customer service. Great video Caleb! I really liked your point about the service/treatment and how that could be a factor in what is considered luxurious. I started buying Coach in the late 1900s as the kids say, not once did I receive a thank you card and I honestly can’t remember anything being packaged up nicely. Maybe that’s just how things are out here but oddly for how unimpressed I am with my local LV boutique that is the one thing they do, send a follow up thank you text/email and the way you receive your purchase seems a little extra. I do agree the price does not equate luxury there are more and more niche brands out there with luxury materials giving Chanel etc a run for their (or my ?) money. That quality, service etc will be the key to what I consider luxury to me.

But, I still have three purses from the 90's that I still enjoy.

Well said! It's so interesting how every area of collecting is different. I'm more of a fragrance collector and "luxury" really isn't a factor in that. The quality of a fragrance is the biggest factor in my mind. When it comes to bags I look for the same thing and a well made, beautiful bag is something enjoyable to own. The name on the bag is really irrelevant.

I don't care if it's not considered luxury. I'd actually like to keep their prices semi-affordable because they make really good leather products. I recently bought a Coach Henry and Coach Hudson backpack. I couldn't find anything near its price with the same quality that isn't from some obscure brand. Other brands like Prada, Gucci and Saint Laurent are charging more for nylon backpacks with inferior quality. I think what's dragging Coach down are some of the lower quality models here and there, particularly those you see at the outlets. But models like those from the 1941 line are very nicely made, like it's from an upper tier brand. I bought my mom and sister a couple of them over the years such as the Swagger 27, the Hutton shoulder, the Dinky to name a few. They're all holding up well with only leather conditioner as maintenance once every several months. Mind you, they do have Hermes and Chanels, but they still use their Coach bags.

Your experience with Coach highlights the importance of prioritizing quality over brand name or price tag. It's fantastic to hear that you've found Coach's leather products to be of exceptional quality and value, especially compared to some higher-priced alternatives from other luxury brands. The 1941 line, in particular, seems to excel in craftsmanship and durability, making it a worthwhile investment. It's great to know that your mom and sister continue to enjoy their Coach bags alongside their higher-end options. Thank you for sharing your positive experiences-it's a reminder that true luxury isn't always defined by the label, but rather by the quality and satisfaction the product brings.

I agree that luxury is personal to the individual. I went to high school in the 90s and I was in a small town and all the rich kids would carry Dooney. As I grew up that was a goal of mine to get a Dooney bag. I was in such a small town that I didn't know what a Mercedes was until I went to college and my boyfriend drove one then that is when he explained to me. Fast forward now I am in my 40s and just last year I got my first Chanel bag and it was a bit underwhelming to say the least and I am thinking of giving it to a family member and just stick to my contemporary no name bags even if that means I am not on a certain level with possessions. When I was in college my mom bought me a cheap Anne Klein watch and now that she has passed away I will only wear a cheap Anne Klein watches to remember her. That is luxury to me.

Yes, time is luxury. I agree. Just because the price is high don’t make it luxury. The quality of the handbag makes it a luxury. Yes, I agree. You shouldn’t have to feel less than. I have to agree, Coach quality is not what it used to be, but neither is Chanel. The vintage bags are better. 😊

I think luxury is the eye of the beholder. I do think, however, that creating products for an outlet of lower quality greatly diminishes the brand. Gucci does that as well, but not to the extent of Coach. I understand that is good for a bottom line dollar, but it really does diminish the brand. The only Coach bag I like is the Rogue, and I love it. Their other designs just don't do much for me. Still, if something makes you feel good and it's something that you don't need, to me it's a luxury.
@CalebSnell
@CalebSnell 4 месяца назад
You make an excellent point about how the perception of luxury can vary from person to person. It's true that brand image can be impacted when products of lower quality are introduced, potentially diluting the essence of the brand. However, it's great to hear that you've found a Coach bag you truly love in the Rogue! At the end of the day, luxury is indeed about what brings us joy and makes us feel good, regardless of brand or design. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful perspective!

Hi Caleb, I started my Herme’s journey last year and I have collected quite a bit of their products but I still love Coach and continued to buy Coach even during my journey. I also own some LV, Gucci and Chanel purses but I still consider Coach and other brands like TB, and Strathberry to be luxury. Granted not all their items give that luxury feel but so does other high end brands. I enjoy carrying Coach as much as Herme’s (although I don’t have any of their quota bags yet). Thank you for this discussion.

To me, luxury is a feeling, not necessarily a price tag. Does the piece feel elevated aesthetically? Does the build quality feel durable af? Is there something unique & extraordinary about the materials? I’ve gotten these feelings from thrifted pieces, as well as higher end stuff. Coach feels like an in-between, hybrid luxury brand. Some Coach pieces feel p cheap, while others feel more “luxurious” cuz of a bold design, quality materials, solid construction etc. My Coach retail Gotham backpack feels luxurious to me. My $100 Coach outlet carryall pouch also feels luxurious, even with at low-ish price point. Both of these pieces feel sturdy and high quality af, and like they’d last a lifetime with basic upkeep. At the end of the day, I want stuff that’s gorgeous & won’t fall apart in like 30 seconds lol. Whether it was expensive or exclusive really doesn’t matter to me.

You've beautifully captured the essence of luxury! It's not just about the price tag but rather about the feeling of elevated aesthetics, durable build quality, and unique materials. It's fantastic that you've found pieces from Coach that evoke that luxurious sensation for you, whether it's a high-end retail purchase or a more affordable outlet find. What matters most is that the items feel sturdy, high-quality, and capable of lasting a lifetime, regardless of their price or exclusivity. Thanks for sharing your insightful perspective-it's all about finding beauty and durability in the things that bring us joy!

Those saying that words matter, and if you call everything luxury, then nothing is luxury make me wonder ... what meaning can the word "luxury" have to them in this context if you can pay $3,000 for something and have it chipping or peeling in a short amount of time, or flawed from the get-go. "Luxury" shouldn't be a status a brand earns once and has forever regardless of whether it produces garbage or not, it has to be continually earned, imo. I like how Autumn framed it, in that Coach is not a 'luxury house' in the most common sense of the term, but it does make some luxury pieces. On the flip side, some luxury houses make some decidedly not luxurious pieces. And in those cases, like Dacob said, it's really only exclusivity via price holding up that 'luxury' label. And yes, as you point out, spending $550 on a bag to carry your stuff (the price of the Coach piece that's currently my favorite) is a luxury, and even in terms of accessibility, is still out of the range of the average person. But Coach also makes bags that cost $100 which the average person can afford. So Coach as a brand makes both luxury and non-luxury pieces. I recently bought my first LV piece, from the boutique! And when I went to pick it up, the hole was not punched in the strap, so you couldn't buckle it at that point. So this 'luxury' house did not have enough quality control to prevent this, and even though I mentioned to the SA "okay, once you see it and let me know everything's okay", they obviously didn't look to make sure the bag was in good condition either. Is this the "luxury"? I've never bought a bag from Coach, or Target for that matter, that failed to have its hole punched. In the end, then, it must be just as Connor said it, it's basically the price and that that makes it hard to acquire.
@CalebSnell
@CalebSnell 4 месяца назад
You bring up some excellent points about the evolving meaning of "luxury" in today's context. It's true that the word loses its significance if it's applied indiscriminately, especially when some high-priced items fail to meet quality standards. Luxury should indeed be something earned through consistent quality and craftsmanship, rather than just a label attached to a price tag. Autumn's framing of Coach as a brand that produces both luxury and non-luxury pieces resonates well, highlighting the diversity within the brand's offerings. Similarly, Dacob's observation about some luxury houses producing decidedly non-luxurious pieces underscores the importance of looking beyond the label. Your experience with LV's quality control issue raises valid concerns about whether the price alone justifies the "luxury" label. It's disappointing when brands fall short in ensuring product integrity, regardless of their reputation or price point. Ultimately, as Connor pointed out, the exclusivity via price often plays a significant role in upholding the "luxury" label. However, accessibility shouldn't be overlooked, and brands like Coach offering a range of price points make luxury more attainable for a wider audience. Thank you for sharing your thoughtful insights and experiences-it's a reminder to critically examine what truly defines luxury in today's market.

Yes, for me Coach is luxury! It's a relative term to begin with, but my definition is : an object or experience that comes at a price times higher than what's widely available and easily accessible, but has a great quality and unique selling points. When it comes to bags, that is beautiful design, longevity and attention to details. I don't like loud branding and trendy design so Coach hits all the marks. My priorities have never been focused on ownership of status objects and I find the prices for high end bags and goods ridiculous - I will always choose to spend that amount on traveling or on my home. I'd rather wear a basic bag and shoes in another country than stay in one place with my luxury items. For the price of a Coach bag I can get a new kitchen appliance or a weekend on a budget in Italy. So choosing to buy the bag instead is luxury. It almost feels silly to do that 😂 But I've recently purchased a small cross body and a tote and I'm loving them and the idea they will last. I feel like the quality of more expensive items is not necessarily better and the mark up is just to get the privilege of wearing a certain designer. It's just a matter of disposable income, personal style and social environment.
@CalebSnell
@CalebSnell 4 месяца назад
Absolutely! Your perspective on luxury resonates deeply with me. It's all about quality, unique selling points, and the ability to choose what brings joy and fulfillment into our lives. I completely understand prioritizing experiences like traveling or investing in your home over high-end status symbols. At the end of the day, it's about what makes us happy and aligns with our values. Your recent purchases from Coach sound like fantastic choices, and I'm glad they're bringing you joy and satisfaction. Here's to finding luxury in the things that truly matter to us!

Anything with logos isn't a luxury item, it's just a marketing strategy to make the middle class think that they could look rich by buying an overpriced mediocre quality bag while serving as walking advertisements to more middle class people with no education on quality feel envy. Luxury could be find at those stores if you are looking for design and you have an understanding about quality in materials, but it's very far between. Also carrying monograms doesn't mean having style, nowadays it only identifies you as a victim of marketing.
@sanguinehearts9373
@sanguinehearts9373 4 месяца назад
No, it's not luxury. There is a difference between what someone considers a personal luxury, and how we use the term in a broader way. Luxury for all intents and purposes refers to goods from a specific set of designers (usually heritage houses or individual designers, like Phoebe Philo, who made their careers at heritage houses), and these goods generally have a higher than average price point. Coach is lovely, but it is firmly contemporary. One of my favorite professors used to say, "if you include everything, you include nothing.". Definitions matter. Language matters. We can't impose personal definitions on the whole because someone got their feelings hurt when told that Coach isn't luxury.
@CalebSnell
@CalebSnell 4 месяца назад
That's an interesting point about inclusion. However, I still stand by the idea that "luxury" is too broad of a term. Does scarcity help a brand lean more into the exclusivity of luxury? Sure. But I'm sure there's more to it than that.

No, Coach is not luxury. I am tired of everything must be equal. Porsche & Skoda are both automobile brands, but one is luxury. I went into the Coach "boutique" in Chicago on the Magnificent Mile to see what people are talking about. it was dingy, the sales people were all chatting to each other and it looked like a tornado had blown through there. Luxury is exceptional and not everything is. Why can't we just be honest about different tiers?
@CalebSnell

I appreciate your perspective! It's true that not all brands or experiences are created equal, and it's okay to acknowledge different tiers or levels within industries. Luxury is indeed about exceptional experiences and products that stand out. While Coach might not meet everyone's definition of luxury, it's important to recognize and respect that perceptions can vary. Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts-it's through open dialogue that we can better understand and appreciate the diversity within the concept of luxury. 🥰✨

Well in fairness Chanel is garbage now. So how can we quantify Chanel as luxury, when Coach actually has better quality on a lot of their bags? LV also has quality issues. Sure the boutique experience might be better at Chanel and Vuitton than Coach, but that isn't everything. I think luxury is the eye of the beholder. I don't like Coach (except the Rogue bag) and I don't like Chanel at all. But, if something makes you feel good, then it's luxury. I love Vuitton, Gucci and Dior. Hands down my three favorites, but you'll never catch me spending a dime on Chanel. Boring designs and crap quality, for an insane price.
