It's also very different once you know his personal situation. At first, it seems like he's just trying to give a self help/motivational speech to his team. Upon second viewing, you can see the pain in his eyes; the choices he made for his kid.

Right! You of course want to be careful, but you'll also need to learn to take some risks here and there if you want to come out on top in the end. Playing it safe may allow you to place somewhere, but it won't be what'll lead you to finish first with much of anything at the same time though.

Charlie couldn't see that, cuz he was stuck in the past: the days with Bombay, winning and scoring. Charlie slowly learned that as a hockey player, and a human being, that he who cannot adapt must perish.

As a kid, I liked him because he was trying to teach them how to grow up and play better. No more duck tricks.

The only reason the ducks had trouble adapting and reacting to Orion's style was because he laid it down on them a little too sharp in the beginning. They weren't kids anymore, but they weren't exactly adults/pros either.

Goes both ways. Orion was tougher than they were used to dealing with, but the Ducks also weren't serious about what he was trying to teach them.

Yup, many kids have to learn that a loss = doesn’t always automatically mean a complete failure. You learn and go on, even if that loss was the end of that chapter in their life. You grieve, then hopefully sth else will come along that inspires you. You learn not take losing as a blow to your self-esteem. That’s what Orion was telling them: have to do, regardless of how you feel. Cry a bit, but learn how to independently build your self-confidence from your personality traits, from your work ethic, not just one game. Even if it’s the biggest game of your life. Bc when it’s over, you can celebrate, but life moves on. Just like the hockey games move forward overall.

I also speak from my own personal exp. I’ve lost a lot in my life, but some game isn’t gonna ruin it. Like if I lose at a board game, who cares, bc being good at Scrabble doesn’t really matter in my life and who I want to be/what I want. Failing an important interview? Yeah, that sucks and is harder to get over. Fail a championship chess game? Yeah, that’s hard to get over for some. But life goes. You learn, heal, and move on. That’s how you become resilient, confident and disciplined.

Charlie was a dick. High school hockey is a different level then Bantams (what they played in D2)

@@patb6317 Charlie wasn't always a dick. He did extend his hand to Orion, and Orion didn't shake his hand. I just wasn't sure why Orion didn't do that, Charlie was giving him respect on that.

@@dudetocartman Because he didn't offer a hand in a formal way, it was offered ina goof off ''you can call me charlie'' . The reply from Russ after that clearly stated that he ''caugh'' orion drift rather quickly. Sorry coach we were messing with you or something like that.

@@dudetocartman It also didn't help when Charlie was talking to him like he was the Head Coach and Orion was the 4th line player lol. He said he was the new guy, 100% disrespectful to his new head coach no matter how long he was with Bombay! They expected to be goofballs and Orion was going to play with it, Charlie couldn't deal with the fact he had to grow up and that included following a new Coach's philosophy and play defense when offense was not going to happen.

You can tell from the music, they're letting you know Coach Orion has a heart of gold, he didn't need a judge to force him to coach kids into adults, he did it out of love.

D3 was a step down from D2. That's the problem. They went from winning the Junior Goodwill Games Championship to struggling against a varsity high school team. Even as a child, that never made sense to me.

That's how the third movies in a series usually go it seems. One obvious example of this was when Daniel LaRusso had trouble with some punk kid who was Mike Barnes in the third Karate Kid. He of whom should've been able to take on with ease, after beating a much more highly skilled Karate Master in Chozen, in the second film during a life or death match. Even Clubber Lang in Rocky III (as tough of a fighter as he was) wasn't exactly the talented boxer Apollo Creed was for that matter either.

@@anglobostonian I disagree. The team (well, who stayed),.was growing, but still had the talented but happy go lucky attitude. The idea of the film was not just to see them play and win, but to mature into adults with a winning attitude and working hard for the success they were accustomed to. The losses and embarrassing tie were pretty much to give that idea.

Bombay tried to show them tricks they could use to win games, Coach Orion taught them skills they need to win at life.

Well he did once Bombay told him about Orion's situation, and why he truly did make a good coach in the end. That of which Charlie couldn't quite see at first, with him clearly being affected by Bombay's departure more than anyone else on the team.

One thing Charlie didn't understand early is that life never stays the same and as great as things were with Bombay coaching, he had to move on just like Charlie would have to in due time. Bombay was moving on to a great opportunity and Charlie couldn't deal with it, soon enough Charlie would have had to move on, did he expect Bombay to be his junior hockey or college coach lol? I read somewhere that Joshua Jackson (Charlie Conway) was not that fired up about doing the 3rd film especially since he would need to carry the film with Emilio Estevez taking a HUGE downgrade in his role, then again maybe that's what got him to return lol.

Orion and Bombay had very different experiences when it came to hockey and coaching. Orion experience as a pro from the NHL can fill in the gaps in Gordon's experience quitting Pewee hockey, and not playing again until the minors.

And this is also why having a stern disciplinarian usually isn't a bad thing, just as long as it's one who also knows how to relate to his players, and both wants and knows what's best for them. Herb Brooks was a fine example of this, who pushed his players to the brink, and never could have pulled off their amazing miracle without his teaching them of both the game, and way of life. Problem is getting your players to buy into it, and it's far more difficult for a tough coach like Orion to succeed in this day and age unfortunately.

There's also another scene later in the movie in which Orion says "Nobody's forcing you to be here. It's your life." He's also teaching personal responsibility, as well as the fact that just because you have a choice doesn't mean there aren't consequences.

You kids are probably wondering, "Hey, Coach Orion, how do we get back on the right track?"

Since Orion played pro, he had a level of experience and discipline that was different to Bombay's more team building approach. No knocking on Bombay, but the years between his last Pewee game and the time he was in the minors left a huge gap of conditioning that he just doesn't have.

Agreed 100%. Even as a child, I always felt that after winning the state championship in "The Mighty Ducks" and then winning the so-called "Junior Goodwill Games" (yes the Goodwill Games did exist, look it up) in "D2: The Mighty Ducks", going to a prep school was a step down for them.

What’s bigger than the Goodwill Games which was basically the Olympics. This movie, as illustrated by this speech, was about them facing the biggest opponent they ever could, themselves. It was about growing from little kids and become mature. Which is also a good reason why the Varsity team was the villain. They were older, smarter, more disciplined, more physically mature. The Ducks had to grow up. The constant message through the movie was, “you’re not kids anymore”. That was reinforced over and over. No more Bombay, it’s time to grow up and get out of your comfort zone. Coach is a hard ass and makes us work, well life isn’t all fun and games, you have to work, push yourself, have discipline. It was a great coming of age movie for a cast that were literally a bunch of misfits from the “mean streets” of the Twin Cities, now become young adults with eyes towards the future and life after hockey. That’s what was awesome about Orion. Bombay taught them how to win ON the ice, Orion prepared them to win OFF of it

The prank war, however silly it became, demonstrated how both sides were still acting too much like kids. The JV team was acting like kids because that's what they've always been, while the Varsity team gave in to acting like kids because their affluence gave them a safety net (i.e., the sneaky dive-and-dash at the high-end restaurant).

And he called it. I watched the reunion episode in the tv show, and none of the Ducks who came back turned pro. Not even Adam Banks. I'm left to guess that Charlie or Jessie were the only ones that could of made it that far. Unfortunately, we won't know until Season 2.

"Your little Duck tricks won't work anymore." This isn't just a literal statement, but a symbolic one as well. Bombay was training kids. Orion is training early high schoolers who are transitioning into adult life where things are *very* different.

Yeah definitely feels like he is talking to himself as much as he is them.
